This morning marks the first long-pants morning here in New England. We got up and it was 45F outside, so I had to dig out my light-weight long pants, plus my vest and sleeves. Riding along, I started remembering those winter sensations that I'd forgotten through the summer heat:
- Cold ears and face
- Toes slowly cooling to numbness
- Eyes watering wildly for the first few minutes
- Blowing huge snot wads every so often
With these familiar sensations kicking in, my ice paranoia also started revving up. I had to keep reminding myself that we were still well above freezing so far, and that all water on the ground would still be liquid at this point.

Brrr! That is chilly! It's been in the low 60s or maybe high 50s around here- perfect riding temps!
The thing I've noticed is how much darker it is in the morning. We switched over to the brighter headlights this week. I'm a little concerned about all of the "invisible cyclists" that we've been seeing, those who may not have money for lights, even cheap ones, but who have no other way to get to work than their bikes.
Saturday I had the A/C on, this morning I woke up shivering. Gotta love New England. But I much prefer riding in the cold than in the heat and humidity. Fall riding is the absolute best!

The only thing I like about Fall is the crisp cool weather and I can walk to the train without sweating like a pig!!
As for post Fall, I could leave the oncoming dark days and winter storms :(

Fall is my favorite time of the year. Crisp air, beautiful foliage, geese....I'm counting the days.

After Ike does his thing, we're supposed to get a cool front that'll knock temps down to the mid-80s. I can't wait!!! Fall is my favorite time of year, too.

Funny, as I was standing in a very crowded commuter train home (it was rainy and very humid here), I've got rivulets of sweat running down my back, and I'm taking deep breaths as I tend to be a tad claustrophobic (very, very crowded train, people touching people, people talking, and talking, spewing all that hot air....don't think the a/c was working), I said the same thing to myself: "I'm sweating like a pig!" Then I thought "Where does that saying come from?" Googled it and apparently pigs don't sweat!
Just what a wee mind thinks about when trying very hard not to freak on very crowded commuter train...

- Blowing huge snot wads every so often
I love it! I'm SUCH a tissue person, especially in cold weather. I'm always folding up my pieces of tissue to put in my jersey as part of my riding prep ritual. Luckily, it doesn't usually involved "huge snot wads", but generally runny wetness ... ... but none the less, I relate.
Lucky for me, in Southern California it's not NEARLY as cool and crisp as it is in New England ... Boo Hoo for Tom Brady being out of football this season, by the way ... :( ... Dh is a HUGE Patriots fan. But I digress! While it is not nearly as cold here, I DID have to dawn my "light jacket" on yesterday morning's ride. ;) And it did remind me of the days in January and February when I wore my thief mask (to keep my ears warm) and how impressed Dh was with me that I actually got out and rode in the cold weather. Something he strongly avoids. He's lucky to have another sport to fall back on. Running is a better cold weather sport since there's much less of a wind factor. But, since I hate running with a passion, I'll have to brave the cold wind in my face and the snot dripping out of my nose. :D
