Panniers

Happy Monday everyone.
I searched the forum but couldn't find any topics-- so forgive me if I'm duplicating an existing thread.

I want to start commuting to work. I did a trial run on Saturday with a backpack I have and found that to be awkward (backpack kept shifting) and uncomfortable (sweat concentrated on the back when the pack was). Anyway, I want to look into getting some panniers to store stuff for when I get to work.

Can anyone provide some reviews on the various paniers out there? What has worked for you, what doesn't? If it makes a difference, I have a specialized road bike. I would prefer something that is easily removed for when I just want to ride instead of commute.

Panniers are easily removed, but the rack is not...

I use Ortlieb (http://www.ortliebusa.com) panniers. The reason I chose them is that they are simple, and more importantly they are waterproof. When I commute to work, I use a single pannier on my rear rack. People have commented on that thinking that it would make the bike feel lopsided, but I really don't notice that - probably because I don't have much weight in the pannier (clothing, toilet articles, sandals, lunch & snacks). And there is absolutely no way I would be happy with this stuff on my back...

I have 2 sizes of panniers from the days when I toured using only panniers. When I commute, I use the smaller size panner on the rear rack.

my hubby has arkel panniers http://www.arkel-od.com/index_no_fl.html and absolutely loves them! he did a lot of research before we bought them (and had to convince me they were the best so i'd pay their price for them!)

he also has the little "trunk bag! all are roomy and have rain covers.. also come in different colors!

Caligirl, Arkel also has the bug. I like the idea of being able to take it off the bike and use it as a backpack. Check their site. There is also a review at Gilrbike.com.

My husband and I both have Arkel panniers and the awesome Tailrider. I highly recommend these panniers. The quality is amazing, and the company is a delight to deal with. We changed our minds about sizes several times and had to make several returns and re-orders last year before our NY state tour, and they worked with us all the way through. I can't say enough about this company.

I picked up some panniers at REI for a reasonable price. They have more than enough room for my purpose: commuting, carrying all my clothes and teacher stuff. They have several compartments to help organize your stuff. I would think they'd be large enough for bike camping. They've held up very well.
