I don't do LOLspeak. But thanks.

My cats speak better english than I do, and they can spell better too. :D:cool::cool::cool:

I never 'get' why the bad English is supposed to be funny in these cat photos. People send them in email a lot now. The photos are cute, but what is the bad English supposed to 'represent'? Why exactly is "I can has cheeseburger?" funny, for example?
Can someone enlighten me?

Would you expect a cat to speak English well? ;)

Personally, I find them hilarious, especially when paired with the right feline facial expression. But then again, my cats have distinct personalities, and I can picture them saying some of thse silly things.

See...now...the home page picture of the bunny in the party hat (http://icanhascheezburger.com/) with the cheesecake..... Now that might have been (mildly) amusing if the caption were spelled correctly - given the general disapproving nature (http://www.disapprovingrabbits.com/) of rabbits.
And, as you can see....rabbits are much more eloquent than cats (or dogs (http://www.disapprovingrabbits.com/search?updated-max=2008-08-30T06%3A22%3A00-05%3A00), I guess). :D

I agree- the bunny/cheesecake photo would be funnier with normal English caption, like on the other bunny page you linked to.

I think LOL Speak is a mutated combination of "text speak" (with its use of abbreviated, shortcut spellings) and "Engrish" (which is all about the use of peculiar wordings and misspellings like you often find in instruction manuals that are produced by people for whom English is not their primary language).

I kinda find LOL Speak to be pretty hilarious. I get really intrigued by creative use of language.

Here's a guide to LOL Speak: lol kitteh (http://icanhascheezburger.com/2007/04/24/lol-kitteh-as-a-second-language-lksl-101-in-five-easy-steps/) :D

For once I agree with SB. Get over it & stop thinking about what it's meant to represent.

Don't you have an election to worry about?

i have nothing to "get over" i just answered the original question, i'm not interested in painting LOLcats.

it's hard enough to paint what I do feel passion for.

I think it's too authoritative to tell people to "Get over it" or tell them to stop thinking about something.
Heck, I can think about whatever I choose to!

It's an interesting subject and I'm always interested in things that reflect the current state of our culture and society. I'm truly not losing any sleep over LOL cats- just couldn't figure out why the style of the captions are supposed to be funny. The cat photos are certainly sometimes cute and amusing. I see these LOL things used and sent around attached to email often these days. I have received quite a few myself. Wackyjacky's explanation shed some light on the matter, though I myself don't really see a big resemblance to cell phone 'text speak' except maybe in stuff like using "4" for "for", etc.

I confess that to me personally, it goes beyond the "Engrish" thing- the captions used remind me more of when Eddie Murphy used to do his satirical imitation of Buckwheat talking in a stereotypical Amos n' Andy, Step n' Fetchit, JackBenny/Rochester type manner. Probably most people here are too young to remember that stuff on tv/radio/movies, but I remember it well, and it still makes me a bit uncomfortable, and the LOL style reminds me of that. Maybe it's a generational thing. Maybe they truly have nothing to do with each other. That's why I was interested in the logic behind this LOL thing- I found it puzzling but I didn't want to pass my own judgment on it before knowing more about it.

If anyone thinks I am over thinking it, well that's fine! I'm all for thinking what you like! I believe that sometimes thinking in depth is not a bad thing. Everyone can have their own opinions and thoughts and it's all ok. :)
