Hello all!
Post here if you'd like to join our weight loss challenge for Sept/Oct.
Anyone is welcome and all we ask is that you commit to weigh in once a week (on Fridays or thereabouts) and share your weight. In general, if you post by Monday, noon (PST), then you'll make the weekly chart update.
Please post your starting weight this Friday (9/5). Also, if you'd like - post your weight loss (or maintenance) goal for this 8 week period. An 8 week challenge makes our final weigh-in day Halloween (Oct 31st).
Let's Git er done!

After taking a few months off, I'm going to try again! Please include me. I'm really nervous . . . I haven't gotten on the scale in almost 3 months
I know this is a weight loss challenge . . . but I have other goals I'd like to achieve. Weight loss will hopefully be the result.
Goals:
1. Eliminate night time snacking
2. Cut down diet soda consumption or eliminate all together
3. No more potato chips and cookies--they do nothing for my health so why eat 'em?
4. Get up earlier in the morning and switch to AM workouts

GLC, I have never lost weight and I would not be able to reach my goals from last challenge without your chart. Honestly, without your chart I would not even remember my goal (I got very selective memory). My shed pounds are really your triumph too. Thank you for all the work - I know how much consistency it takes to post the chart every week.
So, that said I am in for the challenge.
I am again teaching 250 people this semester and to add to the stress, I have very prominent VIP daughter in my class. Thus, my goal might sound silly but if I loose 5 pounds and get to 149 lbs, it is going to be the least I weighed since the high school and I will be very proud of myself.
Thanks again.

I think I will join you girls this time if maintaining also counts besides losing a few.
I weighed more this winter and every time I would catch this post too late I would think "oh, drats, missed it again... ok, next time". Hopefully this will give me the motivation to keep it off and ride more to do so.
Thx for being the organizer:).

I had to weigh this morning because I'm doing the Breast Cancer walk this weekend and will be away from a scale tomorrow through Sunday. I also forgot I had to weigh this morning until after I had snarfed down breakfast :D so I might be a teensy bit heavier. :p
Anyway, I'm starting at 145 on the nose and my goal is 137. Have a good weekend everyone!

TE # challenge rules question...
OK, I tried to sift back through old threads, but I'm not sure if the rules changed. Are you still doing the challege with some type of reward or without?
I think I want mine without... whatever exactly that means. Having some pals for support is a reward IMO:).
How do you post your #s? Do it in the chart, or put it in the thread for someone to enter?

172.0 this morning.
Goal for this challenge- 165.
Good luck everyone!
114 for the last two mornings. Strange since its been reading 116 all summer long. Oh well I'll take it. Goal weight is 110. A couple years ago I lost 81 pounds and ive been trying to keep it off ever since so even when I gain a few pounds I start to feel panicy. This challenge hopefully is going to keep me on track so I dont end up eating crappy junk food.

I will put my goal for this challenge at 149. That is 10 lbs in 8 weeks, I kind of hope it is more but want a realistic goal so I am not disappointed. I am actively following Weight Watchers and 2 lbs a week is a healthy rate for their program.
I am trying to lose the 30-35 lbs I gained when I moved back to Austin. Don't know why I just threw all my good habits from being a success on WW in 2004 out the window when I changed area codes!
Good luck everyone with your personal goals!

I finally remembered to do a weigh-in on a Friday morning! Yay me!
My starting weight is 165.1. My goal is 159. Gotta get out of the 160's for good!
For all who are wondering/new - just weigh in on Friday mornings and post here. I'll update the chart after everyone has posted. There is no longer a 'reward' because a couple of challenges ago, everyone felt that just keeping track and working together was motivation enough. Hopefully that's still true! Oh, and as long as your weight is posted by noon on Monday (PST), then you'll make the chart update for the week (I do it on my lunch break on Monday). Lastly, if you miss two weigh-ins in a row, I'll 'hide' you on the chart just to keep it easy to read. If you come back, I can always 'unhide' you and updated it, so don't think I'm deleting anyone!
I think that's it. Definitely ask if you have other questions! And welcome!

I was surprised to find myself at the low end of my 3lb. range this morning - 133.4. I'm probably a bit dehydrated, hence the lower number, but what the heck. I'll take it. My goal, once again, is to see something in the 120's. I'll settle for a consistent 129, but would really like to take 125 out for a spin.
Good luck everyone :)

Weighing in at 189. Should be doable with 8 wks.

Yep, count me in for another 8 weeks.
I just returned from a short 2.5 day business trip where I ate and drank way tooooo much! So even though I saw the 117's at the end of last challenge...I am up to 121.8 this AM. WOW! Hopefully after a few "good eating days" I'll lose some of the "bloat".
So it may seem like I really lose since I am starting off a bit higher than norm.
Goal last time was 115...didn't make it. Think I make it a "bit tougher" and put my goal at 114 (LOL)
Thanks for keeping this going and do the chart!

I'd like to join the challenge. I stopped racing a few years ago and my weight stabilized to what I think normal should be for me but in the last couple years I gained a bit and haven't been able to keep that extra 5-10 pounds I don't need off of me. But, that 5-10 is tough to lose! So, since I've been half heartedly trying for the last year to no avail, I'm in for trying the group support method, and getting serious.

OK, my name is on the chart, but I wasn't sure if we typed our # in there somehow , or just like "this" in the thread... but I see some gals that have done it before typing here. So here ya go...
Gheez, what number to use... the post spin class gym scale weight wearing work out clothes and shoes/cleats, or the home scale first thing after waking in the buff (lesser # of course).
Guess I'll go with the gym scale since I would like to see it about where it was before I got deconditioned and the extra pounds crept on:(.
Today's #: 124 pounds
Goal #: 118 pounds
btw, humble confession:o... one of the first things I thought when I saw our ending challenge date of 10/31 was... oh goodie, Halloween candy as a post weight loss treat ... back to reality, spun 2 classes with the thought of TE today, was 902 calories on my HRM, yeah:)

Cbee... answer to your HRM question...
I have had mine for a while and I love it. I own a pink Polar F6 model with a coded strap, which I think is called a T31. The two come together in a set. I bought mine off PolarDiscount online I think. One of local sporting goods store sells it, but comes only standard with a size medium strap. Online you can specify your chest strap size (mine's small sz). Strap tip: it still helps though to tuck the strap under your sports bra band edge, or Polar sells a bra to fit it if it's your size range (a complaint for some is the strap can fall down your torso during impact).
I recently got it serviced for a battery change and mailed it in to an authorized service center (if you get the battery changed anywhere else it voids the guarantee for the waterproof properties).
It was more that I wanted to pay *ugh*, but EVERYTHING I find for biking is always that way it seems:rolleyes:. But, it's usually worth it. If you wanted to start simple, places like Walmart even sell some basic ones for $20-$30-ish.
To answer regarding accuracy... yes, I think it pretty much is. You can set it a couple ways on my model. Mine is to my age, height, weight. There is also an "own zone" test you can do that adjusts to your fitness level. Also, if you pay at a sports lab, you can enter VO2 max depending how serious you are. Lastly, there is a computer link for data if you like that.
OK... back off hi-jack, but I thought I would go ahead an answer here. I have never did a search on the HRM for TE, but sure there's more info in old threads too. Lots of ladies where them. Ours are linked with our spin bike computers too. Some outside bike computers do the same.
It's very motivating seeing your calories and fat burned post workout on the read out... I think you would like it. Plus, my pink one is not a bad looking casual watch too. Good Luck:).

I am totally disgusted this morning and plan to quit weighing myself. My clothes are looser but my scale is unreliable and is making me crazy! I'm up a bit today - 165.8. That's ok, it's TOTM, so I can't complain. It could be worse.
ASammy1 - if you just started bootcamp and you are sore - your body could be retaining fluids (your muscles, specifically) to repair. I always gain a little when I first change up my workout routine. If you are consistent, I'd bet that by next week, you'll see a drop.

+1 Just what I was thinking for ASammy. Hang in there!
I am totally disgusted this morning and plan to quit weighing myself. My clothes are looser but my scale is unreliable and is making me crazy! I recently remember seeing a fitness site that has a way to track measurements. Maybe do that and only weigh in every 2-3 of weeks to keep the stress down but still know how your doing? I like the idea of keeping track of measurements along with weight because depending on what activities your doing, or if you start working out more, or the more fit you get, your muscle to fat ratio can change. You may weigh a little more, but if your size is going down then that's a good thing.
Don't give up just yet. There is no judging here and you shouldn't be disgusted about anything. Maybe just a new approach to tracking would help motivate you?
Dont really know what to say. Rode the bike x-tra miles this week,walked/jogged with the dogs everyday, went to the gym 2x this week and I have gained a pound. I guess its not a big deal anyways since its my TOTM. So anyways up to 115 this week. Hoping next week will be better!

118.5 today. lost 1 lb. keeping a food journal is helping. and having a partner who's also trying to lose a little helps as we are getting out there. we'll be taking my "new" bike for a spin today and then later a short trail run with our dog. We signed up for our first trail run race 8k in Dec. so that's motivation and it helps with his training for cross season and for future tri's for me. i'm also getting on trails with my cross bike for the first time and that's a fun challenge! (I'm a fairly new rider) So trying new things, places and having fun is going to help. Now if only i would be more diligent with my daily PT designated core exercises!!!

I have been eating like an out of control pig:(. All I can figure is that I'm about a week away from that time of the month. I have been trying to take a recovery day from cardio and lift weights inbetween. Which in ways is a good thing. But, I can't keep eating like this without cardio everyday. So, I'm lucky so far the scale only went a little up (wrong way *sigh*). About 124.25 for me on the gym scale this morning. Bleah...

Cbee, do I ever appreciate your comment. I shall look into tracking measurements, as you suggested. This morning when I stepped on the scale, I weighed 188, whereas I usually weigh only 180, so that REALLY blew me away. Seems the numbers change whenever I move the scale to a different location. lol How weird is that?! I'm glad that I am allowed to weigh in intermittently . . . I didn't think I could do that. I'll give it another go. :)

Confession. I weighed myself yesterday morning and it was 135.6. I knew it was probably water weight gain and decided to wait another day to report in. Sure enough, it was down appreciably today.
Maybe kjay and I own the same make of scale ;). I know that mine is terribly inaccurate even though I weigh in at the same time with the scale in the same place on a tile floor.
I hope that this new lower number is for real, but know that next week it could read 3 lbs higher again for no apparent reason. I think, like kjay, I will also be paying closer attention to the way my clothing feels. I'll keep reporting in, but will not take the number too seriously.

140 Whoohoo! At this time next week, I should be back down below my "highest acceptable weight" which is 139.
I started the week having gained two pounds doing the MS 150, and I was really careful about not overfueling, so that was discouraging. My theory, not supported by any scientific backing, is that when you do hours more exercise than your body is used to, it says "EEK, We are obviously being chased by predators! Conserve calories and fluids for extra energy later!" Kind of like when people go on crash diets and their bodies think it is famine time. Anyway, that is my theory.
I was careful this week, didn't do any crazy dieting and didn't do a lot of exercise, but still am down 3 pounds since Monday, so it obviously wasn't real fat weight, must have been fluids. I would not have been as motivated to get it off if I didn't know I was weighing in this morning.

137.0 this week. I was very happy to see this on the scale this morning! Thought for sure I would have gained this week, it's been very stressfull and I've eaten like cr#p.
Our dog went lame late Monday night and I've been home from work since then. He's getting better, but I'm not sure how much better he can get. He's on Prednisone, which he's been on before, and he's up and walking again. He's only 6 1/2 yrs old and was diagnosed with stenosis and 2 cycsts all at C1 & C2 when he was 23 months old. 9/19/08: 134 lbs and my TOTM which means I'm really doing well because usually I bloat up like a puffer fish!
I am making a real effort to cut out quick foods that are most likely the cause of my weight gains and I think it's working! I am also trying to travel with snacks if I get the urge to grab something on the go. I am now keeping carrots, almonds and rice cakes with me when I'm in the car (I'm a commuter) or on the run so if I get hungry I can fend it off until I get home.

Alright, this week's weigh in: 125.6 I'm up by a lousy .2!!!!
BUT...I have to say last Saturday I allowed myself a splurge, thinking one splurge isn't bad now and then, right? THEN on Sunday we had a church picnic to go to. Usually there is salad at these things....but NO, this time all they had were hot dogs, chips, and cookies! So, by Monday I was up to 127!!!! I spent the rest of the week trying to work it off. So I guess I'm pleased that most of that is gone and will resume trying to drop below that this week. Where is the justice in the world that 1 1/2 bad days = a WEEK of trying to work that off!
I also learned that watching the Food Network's one hour special on desserts is NOT the best way to stave off cravings. My husband dutifully talked me down from the edge last night when I wanted to make sticky buns for dessert (What?! They have baked bananas on top - they're practically health food!) So I had 100 calorie kettlecorn instead.

Unfortunately, menstruation and lack of sleep have overridden the achievements of the past weeks. I continue cycle between 150 - 200 miles a week but the lack of sleep (typically I sleep between 3-5 hours during the week, 5-7 on the weekends) prevents me from loosing weight. I've seen that in past. Body stores the energy to be able to keep being awake.
Once this semester is over, I'll sleep again!
Btw, all of you in the challenge - GOOD WORK! I keep watching your progress and you are great inspiration and even better competition to me!

YAY!! i finally bought a new bathroom scale.
I've been feeling the padding come back, but on the scale it does not look too bad. (so i feel slightly less gross.. but still gross)
over-trained the week before and earlier this week.. so the left achilles is a little tender. going to refrain from moving too much until MONDAY. then gonna stick to nice flat rides. :D
now at 136lbs

134.4 this time.
I know now that my scale is highly unreliable. I've suspected this for quite some time. I had a doctor's appt this week, so I weighed myself before I went (fully clothed). They weighed me 20 minutes after I did and I was two pounds lighter. Then I weighed myself again when I got home and I was three pounds heavier than before the appt. I have no idea what I really weigh

after my whirlwind trip to utah and vegas I'm back pretty much to where i started at 121 :( i tried to be so careful with what i ate and portions but food choices were harder on the road). Also with my injuries - i couldn't go out running when walking hurts my knees. lots of ice in ziploc bags! Did manage a fun bike ride in Zion and a short hike with the bike. i guess not being able to run will get me on the bike more - i may post about my first real trail ride and crash today.

4 pounds to my original goal weight now but think I'll still keep that goal--if I go lower than that, great! If not, well, let's just say I HOPE I can lose 4 pounds in the next 4 weeks!
I think the change in going back to longer rides really shocked my body, because I'm losing like crazy now. :) I'm enjoying it while it lasts, too! :D

140.2. Up a little this week. I'm not sure if it's because it's my first full week of back to back workouts and I'm just retaining water, or if I've over eaten, or if it's because I over ate when I was sick. I just don't know.
I'll have to work hard at watching everything this week. And if I'm up again next week I'll start actually writing everything down.
Sigh, being in the 130s, even though it was just barely, was such a boost.

Hey,
Sorry I missed weigh in last week...just a bad week and I think I just ignored the scale.
I forgot to weigh this AM as I will be out of town starting tonight and will miss Friday weigh.
Hey maybe I'll weigh in on Monday after a weekend of eating and drinking and just see how bad I really was.
Hopefully I'll make the weigh in for the last week.
Starting Monday (yes, Monday--post weekend of family parties and all that stuff) I plan to tape my wine refrigerator door closed...maybe w/ that yellow police tape..."Don't Cross this Line"; get more sleep rest (last month of 1/2 marathon training) and eat BETTER. If I eat balanced I won't have to worry about carbs and w/ the running I NEED the carbs. Just good carbs...more lean protein and FRUIT! (And no candy corn!)
I'll report back and hopefully I can stick to what I say!

I weighed last night, close enough right? 154.5
Hmmm.... After last Sunday's run I did nothing but some minor yard work so that is good enough for me. I seem to be losing slow and 149 is looking possible but not completely probable with only 3 weeks left. That is okay the ultimate goal is what I really care about. If it is slow then it will just annoy impatient me, I know it is healthier.
Keep riding, running, eating well and I will get there.

urgh again!
I'm at the same weight today, but last week on Sat until yesterday I was back down to 139. I'm wondering how much a Wednesday evening swim for an hour and a Thursday morning hour spin class would affect this. Am I retaining water, are my muscles just repairing?
Sigh. I guess I need to start counting calories.

226 here. Seems the more I bike, the more weight I gain:mad::mad: I'm drinking only water, and if I have a small snack when I get home, it's less than 200 calories. I'll assume it's muscle, but it's frustrating!

I did not lose weight when all I was doing was biking. The weight loss really started when I started doing weights and intense core work.
A little self horn tooting: I'm wearing low rise jeans today and my honey informed me that I have no muffin top. :p
Veronica
I missed last week's weigh-in because of some work insanity (so it slipped my mind). I weighed on Monday and noticed that with all of my travel and grabbing food at restaurants, I was holding water like a freak (I had bloated up to about 237). The water is starting to come off finally.
This morning: 231.
Still up from my last weigh-in, but I know it's just water. It should make an exit by the end of the weekend.
Oh, and re: weight loss and biking. I *gained* weight when I started biking. And then I injured myself and gained more weight. Unless I'm lifting (fairly heavy) weights, I don't lose. If I don't manage to get into the gym to lift 2-3 times a week, my weight (and measurements) stays the same, or starts to climb. Cardio alone just doesn't do it for me when it comes to controlling or losing weight.

I have finally moved to Colorado and getting settled in and so seems the cold weather too....Brrrrr
Really need to get myself under control, been spinning out for some time, and it's catching up with me-Big time! Stress certainly plays a factor in weight gain and when I combine that with eating to calm myself it caused me to go up a size in pants and cry (a lot). I have been searching for work, we just bought our first home in end of July, and still no find. My husband travels so I play single mom often. Meaning I have to be somewhat close and have bankers hours.
