I moved into my new house last week, and in order to provide myself with a "commute" (I work from home), I've gotten myself a post office box for my business mail. The P.O. is only 2.5 miles away, a pleasant if very short bike ride. I can easily extend that ride to 15 miles on country roads. I'm really looking forward to my minimum 5 mile round trip "commute" every day (hey, that's over 1000 miles a year!)

Woo hoo! I like that you have to go to the P.O. every day to get your mail. Very smart! I hope you enjoy your mail commute each and every day. :D

When I have to go to the little local post office I intend to ride my bike. Won't be often seeing as we are close to two years in the house and I have been there two times. :p

Your daily commute sounds great, you should meet some neighbors that way.

After much delay (procrastination), I did my new commute today. It was great. It took 15 minutes each way with a couple of traffic lights that I got red, so I got 30 minutes of cycling in this morning. Not nearly the 1 hour + each way when I lived and worked up in DC, but better than nothing.

I do have to pass the county dump on the way. It's kinda stinky on a bike; I never noticed it in the car. And there are big garbage trucks going by me. But I've got all my hi-viz gear on, and they saw me.

No mail at the P.O., but it was still a good little ride. :)

Good for you, Tulip! Any way around the stinky dump? I'd never thought of having to ride by one, but I'm sure it's quite scent-a-rific. :p The water treatment plant on one of my rides is another nice nasal awakening. I try not to think of what's being treated as I ride by- knowing I'll be drinking it soon. Oh wait, we don't drink treated sewage water. Whew... the drinking water treatment plant doesn't smell nearly as bad, thank goodness.

There may be another way. I also need to consider the time of day because the one alternate route that I know of is on a heavily traveled road with lots of rush-hour traffic. There are also the school busses to avoid. Get behind one of those, and my little commute will take an hour!

The stink isn't that bad. I was surprised to learn that it is a dump. There are no seagulls at all. I'm more worried about all those big garbage trucks passing me.

Luckily, I can go to the PO any time during the day. Early in the morning is preferable for my schedule, though.

Yes! I figured out another route. It's quieter, no stinky garbage dump and trucks! It's a little bit longer, which is great, and goes by the BEST farm stand ever--they grow their veggies and flowers right there! I stopped for my dinner ingredients and some cool fall gourds on the way back.

Now my round trip commute is 6 miles with two little hills and fresh produce. The grocery store is just a bit farther, and I'll stop by there tomorrow.

Yeehaw! A better route with less traffic, AND a farmers stand? You are one lucky, lucky woman. :)

Yep, and it's 3.5 miles each way, even better. 7 miles a day is a nice diversion. AND there's a FedEx box outside the post office. I used FedEx alot. Love my post office (and I even had mail today).

3.5 miles is the perfect length for some sprint intervals and one legged drills.

And I can extend the post office run to include a trip to the grocery store while I'm out. Gotta get that Xtracycle project started.
