I'm training for the 65 mile LIVESTRONG ride in October and I'm experimenting with energy type things as I do my long rides to make sure I know what works for me and what doesn't BEFORE the ride (common sense but validated by the numerous threads here that I've found incredibly helpful).
My cycling partner's husband (who is also a cyclist) recommended an energy/recovery drink called "Garbage" to me. I tried it on a 30 mile ride today but didn't finish it all...tasted pretty good but made me a bit nervous because I'm not sure exactly what it is and what it does. The owner of a local nutrition store recommended it to him (free samples!) because it helps with recovery as well as energy and he now swears by it. Of course, he's male and I'm not and I was just wondering if anyone else had ever tried it before or knows much about it.
Also, on the topic of recovery and energy - thanks to those of you who recommended Sport Beans!! I absolutely LOVE them, especially after learning the hard way that things like Clif bars and Luna bars are too hard to chew and digest when I'm hot and tired during a ride. I went to a local sporting goods store and found Sport Beans for .89 (as opposed to $1.29 at my LBS) as well as ShotBloks, which I also like. Gels are definitely the way to go for me! I've got some packets of Gu but haven't tried them yet.
Any thoughts?
