I ordered a Trek 5.2 WSD in January - I STILL DON'T HAVE IT. The LBS says Trek is having delivery problems. Anyone familiar? Another LBS has the 5.0 in my size - seriously considering it if I can have it NOW. Thoughts? Advice?

are you stuck with the 5.2 when it arrives?? if no and you like the 5.0 and it fits you and you want it - then I'd go for it. But then - I'm an instant gratification kinda gal - I don't even go multiple places on the rare occasion I shop for shoes!

PS: have you tried calling Trek to confirm or deny the story?

It's spring and everybody wants to "be like Lance". I'm sure TREK will catch up. They always do...

I'd wait if it's the bike you want. I'll assume (dangerous, I know) that you have something else you can ride in the meantime???

I do. A very old Centurian. I started doing Sprint tris this year and was hoping to have new wheels. Have already done two on my tried and true.

I know I should be patient, but so sad. AND, it seems strange another LBS would have the bike (wrong size) and mine hasn't gotten any.

I just checked on bikeforum.net... there was a thread from last month where a guy had ordered the 5.2 and had been waiting 6 weeks. He called TREK and received confirmation that they (TREK) are behind schedule on the project 1 bikes.

He was told "soon".

So, wait it out if you can. If not, check out some other possibilities.

I went to another LBS last night. They have the 5.2 in a 54, which I did not think would fit - it did, sorta. Tried the 50 in the 5.9 and can't tell much of a difference. Neither are exactly right though, and now I am doubting the Pilot compact frame. I like how low I sit on my old bike (but I don't like that it is too small for me and that it is Steel). I am now frozen with indecision. Where to turn next? I really want a new bike, already worked out the budget and am ready to buy. Urgh.

If it helps, I am 5'5", long legs, short torso and small hands (which is why the women's design was intriguing).

Jen,

A reason you choose the Trek Pilot over a Trek Madone? If you are going to racing, the Madone would be more suited to that, I think.

If you're going to spend that kind of $$, DO NOT buy a bike that doesn't fit perfectly.

You said you were 5'5... I'm 5'7", have a 32" inseam and I'm on a men's 52cm frame. I would say stay away from that 54cm unless you are WAY more long legged than me.

Don't let your impatience/excitement push you into a snap decision...

I know; easier said than done.

Thanks for all your advice. Really hard to know who to trust. The LBS seems trustworthy. The guy spent lots of time with me. He said he thinks it fits great. Don't know what my instep is. I will find out.

Isn't this supposed to be really fun??

I was not originally in that price range (ha!). I think the Madone doesn't come in WSD, and I was thinking my little hands would like the WSD better. I am going back to the shop today. I will check it out. Sweet bike.

Remember that different geometries also have different fits. I don't know much about Trek bikes, but the website says the Pilot is a more upright ride. A 54 could be right for you. I'm 5'5", 30" inseam and ride a 54 and could have ridden a 56, but the liked the feel of a 54 better.

Bottom line - you are spending big bucks. This isn't a $250 Wal Mart special :D You are going to spend a lot of time on whatever bike you end up with. You want it to feel right.

BTW Why no steel?

V.

Good point Veronica... forgot about that "different geometry" thing.

My daughter's LBS-mechanic boyfriend told me that Trek is having a serious shortage problem with one of their types of carbon fibon (I don't remember which type). This has been the cause of a lot of the delays. Most shops get an intial order from Trek with a variety of models and sizes and after that they order what they need.

Because of this system some shops may have a bike in stock (from their intial shipment) that now has a wait time when ordered. I guess they must have encountered the shortage after pumping out their beginning of the season bikes.

Jenn - I got the Madone 5.2 in November and it is awesome. I'm 5'4, and I got the 52. Its not a WSD, but it fits very nicely.

Trek's 5200 which came in WSD has been replaced by the Madone 5.2

I love the WSD - and in case I haven't said it enough ... I love my 5200 WSD

 I have been waiting for my Trek Pilot 5.2 WSD 54" since January. I had a big argument today with Trek, who claims that they still dont have a set delivery date. It was supposed to be in the shop today !!! famous last words ( I have been given delivery dates since january). Not sure what to do at this point. I have not even had a chance to test ride it to see if it really fits. I was given a bike in January as a birthday gift ( trek but it did not fit). I have tried many other bikes ( trek, cannondale, jamis) but they are all too long. I have long legs and a short torso. They other bikes would require a very short stem which is not recommended. Any suggestions for a different bike to test ride. I think at this point I am going to stick to mountain biking. Alot less stress involved.

I ride a 2003 Specialized Allex Comp 18 (mens) 52.cm.
I'm 5'7", with a 32" inseam. And long arms, the torso of a 4'10" woman.

Attractive, no?

Anyway, I love the bike. You could try one of the new ones... or the Roubaix.

Or if you really want a fit go custom.

Sorry to hear of your ordering troubles! I had posted a very similar problem w/my 2100WSD C model I ordered in March. My LBS ended up calling around and found one for me in Washington. I emailed Trek and basically was told sorry, you're out of luck. I have heard the Specialized Dolce Elite (I believe that is the correct name??) is a good choice. I do know how it is tho when you get your heart set on something. Good luck to you and hope something turns up soon!

I feel your pain. I did the waiting/frustration/why-can't-they-give-me-a-straight-answer thing with Santa Cruz almost two years ago. Anyway, have you looked at the Bianchi Eros Donna? I fit best on bikes with a very short reach. Got the Eros Donna a couple of months ago and love it to pieces. Give it a try if you can find one.

Best of luck to you. Sometimes things are very upsetting at the time, but in the end you find out that it was all meant for a reason. Perhaps your reason is that you have another bike somewhere with your name on it!

you've ordered the bike, paid for the bike...why oh why oh why doesn't your LBS give you a loaner bike? When I got my bike it was a long wait. It's built in Italy they weld, stop for pasta, another weld, walk in the grape fields, weld again, listen to opera in the piazza etc.

I'm kidding, am sure they work fast.

At first I trained on my old mountain bike but very soon my shop simply volunteered the loaner. I ride a 47 cm, the loaner is a 50. Chris made it fit. Heck, if I hadn't already paid for the bike I'd be tempted to buy the Della. Would your shop do that?

Tell them it's an extended test ride on your NEXT bike.

I also ride a Specialized Dolce. There are different models of them and according to my husband I am sure one of them is similar to the Trek. You would be staying with Shimano components instead of going to Campy's which I think that is what they use on Bianci. I am not too familiar with the Pilot, but if it is a road bike for comfort, than Roubaix as Spazzdog mentioned is in that catagory and also comes in different models. I did test the Allez 50 inch, I am 5'2" and although my leg stretch was fine, the reach was a bit more than I wanted. It might be worth going on the Specialized website and you can compare specs and components with what the Pilot offered you.

Hope this helps ~ JoAnn
