Today my oldest moved out to attend college. Only 20 minutes away, but that's far enough for me to be one sad puppy.

Oooh, mine is moving out next week and I just know I'll be just as sad! And he'll be 7 hours away. :(

Hugs, and hang in there!

I moved halfway across the world (15,000 miles away to be exact) to go to college. I moved back for a bit after graduating, but now i'm so far away again. And my younger brother has joined me. My parents don't show it, but I know that deep down they are sad. It makes me feel good to see all of us together again and seeing some sort of relief in their eyes as they know we are doing fine.

I'm sure they won't forget about their mom!

Fuji-where did you go to uni? Good to hear you ventured overseas to do your studies.

I spent my last year of high school in Jakarta, Indonesia (where my family still lives) and went to school in Southern California. I am still in LA. Good thing is that my parents come and visit 2-3 times a year. You do realize how much you miss them and love them when they are so far away.

I went 101 miles door to campus away and mom admitted to bawling when I left. She was thankful I was gone (youngest kid) but missed me terribly. We are super close (also am with my Dad) and I came home almost every weekend the first year. After that it was still at least once a month, now I live 14 miles away and see them weekly, talk on the phone or email pretty much daily. They are never going to be free of me or my brother who is also there at least once a week and calls as often. :p So don't be too sad, you may not really be without them that much! In fact half the time I think my parents wish I was away more.

DH and I talk about moving away but realize we couldn't leave our parents, he is nearly as bad as I am.

I grew up in CT and went to school in MD. The first time they dropped me off, tears were shed. By the time the spring semester was getting to start I was like "Can I GO already?!" and no one was crying:p We actually got along much better not being in each other's hair every day.

Lifesgreat,
I hear you. I dropped my oldest off last Thursday to start her college career. She's about 80 miles away. I think the first day or 2 are the hardest.
Take care of yourself today.

Thank you for the kind words and sympathy. I know I am not the only one going/gone through this and that helps me feel better. One of my child's roommates is the baby of the family and the only girl. Her mom (who is now an empty nester) left two loaves of homemade bread for her daughter and roommates. I walked down the stairs with the other mom and wasn't the only teary eyed one.

On to a new chapter in our lives :)

SK, yeah, my college student is only 9. :p

I shipped a kid off to college last week. While it still feels weird, the strangest part was leaving her at an empty campus. She had to be there early for Marching band camp.

Band camp will be such a great thing for her- it certainly was for me. By the time the other freshmen arrive, she will already know plenty of people and how to get around campus. She'll feel like a seasoned pro :) If her band is anything like mine was, she's in good hands.

I work at a college and the freshmen moved in yesterday. Let's just say there were lots of parents looking both confused and sad and a lot a students wearing the same expressions. I'm remember being there too and it's a huge transition that just takes time. Hang in there!

My nephew, who I love like he was my own son, is leaving for college next week. I'm in S.A., he'll be in Austin, so it's not super far, but still... :(

We also just dropped off our eldest at university today - 2.5 hours away. At least he's not in another province. Didn't get to meet his roomate - he wasn't in, but he has size 13 feet!

Another one of life's transitions. OMG, I'm the mother of a university-aged young adult!!!
