View Full Version : Need help accessorizing my new bike please

So I test rode the Madone 5.1 today and it felt amazing. BF and I are picking up my new bike tomorrow! (I did not want to stack my new bike on top of my old one, since we took the smaller car). First of all, I got an amazing deal. Two months ago, the bike was around $3,100, not including tax. When I went to look at it over the weekend, it was $2,660. I got it for $2,380, including tax!! It helps to know the right people in the bike shops around here.

Ok, so I am already thinking of how to accessorize my bike. Do I go with the pink theme, or the white theme? Pink theme = pink saddle, pink handlebar tape, white theme = well, you get my drift...I definitely do not like the Bontrager saddle that comes with the bike. I think white will get dirty quickly. But pink might be too girly? But I love pink...so I don't care. The guys at the shop suggested white saddle, pink handlebar tape. I don't know.

Since I value your opinions (I always come to this forum for advice - so far, so good), What do you guys think?

Here is a stock picture of the bike from their website...it might help to envision the colors on it. The one I have comes with the greyish Bontrager saddle and black handlebar tape.

Oooh that is a yummy bike. As an expert in accessorizing in pink and clashing it with green tires I say pink highlights would be hot. Fizik has pink bar tape that is much sexier than Bontrager's pink tape and it comes with Fizik branded tape to use at the top instead of icky electrical tape. Besides, how do you plan to keep the white tape clean? Then, you can be cool like me and get the Fizik Vitesse in white with pink highlights. Not pink overkill on that pretty white thing, but enough that it's unique.

C'mon, how can you not think this is HAWT:

That is a nice looking saddle, but is it comfortable? I loved the saddle on my Fuji, but I don't want to transfer it onto my new bike, since I plan on keeping my old bike and riding it from time to time.

The problem with pink . . . is that all the pinks are different! I have a pink King headset and have done the pink tires and bar tape. Was going to get the pink version of my saddle (Aspide Glamour). But have decided, instead, to go with white and have the headset as just a bit of bling. [I have discovered that Selle San Marco does sell bar tape that matches its saddles exactly.]

If you can get a saddle and bar tape that match, exactly or nearly so, I'd say go for it. Whoever suggested mixing a white saddle with pink handlebar tape is fashion-challenged. The 5.1 is a classy looking bike. Nice paint job, so I don't know about a full-on pink saddle and bar tape. The Vitesse white w/pink *might* look okay with pink bar tape, but I think white would look better. Just a touch 'o pink on the saddle.

Actually Fizik color coordinates their saddle colors to the bar tape so yeah they match darn near perfect. I mean they are two different materials so they aren't perfect but close. No worse than trying to match blacks and they'll be far apart. So maybe I am fashion challenged but I do what I like and don't give a rat's tookus! :p

As for comfort I loooove the Vitesse. I had one on my MTB because it came with, big surprise, a Bontrager saddle. Ugh! My desire to ride multiplied a million fold the day it arrived. Same effect on this bike. I was not digging the crummy saddle I had so I chased down another Vitesse. I'm not a big padding person though, so your mileage may vary. Perhaps your LBS will let you try out a black one before ordering the white/pink?

Meeee-yow! How much for that kitten in the window? The one with the sexy pink paint!

Ugh, I saw a pink/black Diva on the Tour de Cure and I totally swooned when the gal walked by with it. The owner sneered at me like I wasn't worthy of looking at her bike. I know stealing bikes is wrong, but she deserved to be pummeled and have her bike jacked by someone who would love it. Namely, me. Bike geeks are a lustful sort and you have to know going into it that buying that bike that it will get looks. Can't handle it, buy something at Wal-Mart.

Okay, sorry to jack your thread but you got my heart rate up with that gorgeous thing.

I say go with the pink because white is the prodominate color on the frame. I think pink accessories will help bring out the pink on the frame without being overwhelming. Funny, on Sunday my brother was looking at shoes for his new bike and I commented that he should get a pair that have red in them to match. He kind of laughed, but on Monday he emailed and said that after I mentioned it he couldn't stop thinking about it and ended up with grey/red shoes:p

From the picture, the bike looks white (and for some reason, I thought it looked white as well when I first saw it) but then when I saw it again last weekend, it noticed it was a light silver/grey...I think Trek calls it silver blossom.

My heart also skipped a beat when I saw this pink beauty. It is limited edition and made for Alberto Contador...so the price tag will probably warrant a heart attack.

I also took a look at the pink/black Diva...gorgeous. Too much bike for me though.

I don't get people who give you looks when you stare at their bikes...come on now, let's share the love!

you can stare at my bike any time you want. I can't imagine who anyone would ride an eye catching bike and then not like it when people gaze at it!

good luck on your quest.

I'm jumping in because I just bought a trek with a similar theme. I didn't like the white handlebars and planned on putting my black seat on it. However, after talking it over my husband--he thought the white handlebar tape looked sharp and if I changed the seat it wouldn't match. The lbs owner said that was the new colors for next year. He fitted me with the white seat on it--so I am going to go with it for awhile. Function will win over fashion in the long run, however. I've only rode it once, but my sister and brother-in-law said, "WOW!" It's growing on me!

Oh, and when did men become fashion divas?! My t-shirt-and-jean-wearing husband just built a new bike. It's black carbon fiber with red and gray stripes. He spent days searching for wheels that would match (he found them and they are perfect!) We went on a two day ride and he refused to put a water bottle holder on his bike until he could find a black carbon fiber one with red accents (he found one!) Seriously? The lbs owner was complaining that the new Trek models are coming in with silver stems and they only have black stems in stock. He said, "we would have had a real problem if I needed to change your stem, because I don't have one that would match." WOW. Seriously?

I KNOW!! BF is the same! Everything has to match. But oh well, all the better for me, because he doesn't put any limitations on whatever I would need to make my bike look smoking.

If only he could understand my need for certain purses and shoes...sigh

It's occurred to me that some men are probably better dressed while riding than at any other time, with all the color-coordinated kits and accessories.

Yeah, OK, the same could probably be said about me, too.

I LOVE PINK!!! :D

I have a black and silver bike and went with the pink saddle, handlebar tape and bottle cages. I get comments all the time from people who like my pink. (And the one's who don't seem to keep their opinions to themselves! Except hubby, who just shakes his head and wishes he could use my bike as a back up, but wouldn't be caught dead riding that thing .... not sure how he'd ride it if he were dead, but ... whatever!)

I also always wear pink jerseys when I ride it. DH and I have a red tandem and he was smart to get us matching white helmets. So, my helmet goes with both bikes. I'm not even sure I'd want a pink helmet because, believe it or not, I really don't want to over do the pink!

I attached some photos. I've never done it before, so hopefully it works!

Oooh Jiffer that is very nice. What kind of saddle is that? I am so torn between white and pink! Maybe i'll have a white phase, and when I get bored of it, i'll have a pink phase...hmmm.

Jiffer- Isn't your husband a racer type? I don't think anyone will say anything to a guy with pink bar tape who drops them like they are standing still. :) In fact there are some local racers who use pink accessories just for the amusement of whopping people's butts on their pinked out bike. That is comfort in your masculinity for sure!

Jiffer's bike is an excellent example of pinking it out in a subtle way. Of course I am partial to the Pink Giro Atmos helmet with your new Madone.

Thank you for your adoration of my bike. :D Speaking of people staring at bikes (from someone else's reply), I couldn't help but notice a girl in my bike club staring at my bike a couple of different times yesterday. She never commented on the pink, but I'm thinkin' she was jealous. Hahaha!!! ;)

Anyways, yes my husband is a racer type, but I guess he is NOT secure enough in his masculinity to be seen on an amazingly awesome pinked out bike. Reminds me, though, of the "girl" decked out in pink that we saw flying down a hill on a snowboard doing tricks. I commented on how good she was and later realized, of course, it was no girl!

My husband can't stand my pink and red "Ride Like A Girl" bottles! He tried to pawn one off to a guy friend who came by on his bike and didn't have a bottle with him. Didn't work, though. I actually don't even use them myself anymore. We use the Polars, too. I have one pink one, but need another!

I DO think, however, he would actually use one of my girlie bottles as a "throw away bottle" at a running race. :) I might even let him, since I really don't use them myself. He buys cheap bottles to run with that he can toss when he's done with them. He's never use one on his bike, though! Pretty sure he wouldn't use the pink polar, either, but maybe if he were REALLY desperate!

Thanks! Your pink/ white accessories are loverly!

Is it bad that I want to get water bottles that coordinate??? I have some non leaching plastic ones that are red and I think they clash. The clear ones that LBS gave me are clear but not made of the right stuff and the water tastes like plastic- ack.

I need to find me some new water bottles!

Arielmoon - I am loving the pink bottle holders...the guys yesterday pulled them out for me as well, all excited about finding something pink for my bike.

TxDoc - I will look into silver! Although it seems harder to find what I want than the other colors...I guess I am picky about the shade of silver. Too shiny = not my style

Keep the pictures coming! I love drooling over your guys' bikes!

Not bad at ALL! I highly recommend Polar bottles, by the way. They really help keep your drinks cool. I fill mine up all the way with ice, dump my Cytomax Lite powder in, fill it with water and shake. They aren't cheap, but well worth it. They make several colors, one of which is pink. I really do need to buy another pink one, because I only have one and that's just not right. On long rides I always have one pink and one white. It coordinates, but two pink would be so much better!

I think I need to look into getting some cooler looking pink bottle cages. Mine are pink, but sort of "old fashioned" looking to me. All this talk of accessorizing has got me thinking about that again!

I use these and they work quite nicely. However, I can't seem to find the pink ones in the 20 oz size! The 24 oz bottles are just too big...and I need to replace my blue one because it got moldy and I can't seem to get rid of it :(

Hi, here is what I found looking for white carbon (sort of silver):)
-stem, handlebar, spacers, and waterbottle cages from Token, www.tokenproductsusa.com
-seatpost from Selcof www.selcof.it
I can take some pictures for you if you'd like to see these components.
And now I am debating about getting this saddle... http://www.cbike.com/ProductImages/sanmarco/aspide_sl_s_carbon.jpg
I love my current saddles so I don;t really need it... but this one is so cute - and 122g!!!

Hee-hee... it must be true that all 'bottoms' are different... For me, anything too padded is a torture device - and anything wider than 130 makes me run away!!! :(
I do like a cutout though :)

I don't even need an excuse, I change mine about once a year. The tape is cheap and the LBS will wrap them (I am not that patient) for cheap. I have had my bike since December 2006 already had black (stock), bright blue and now have dark blue. I will change it again next summer. It makes such a difference in appearance it is almost a new bike everytime. :D

You could get a Pink Terry Butterfly if you need a wide saddle. Not sure which stock saddle your Fuji had but if it is similar to the one my old Fuji had a Butterfly might be similar. Probably a little wider though.

I was thinking the white Terry Carbon Butterfly, but it said something about how it doesn't fit all seat posts...and now I am wondering if it will fit my Madone. The guys at the shop put a white Bontrager inForm R on it...a guy's saddle and I think it is way too narrow. So I am going back and ordering the Bontrager inForm RL in a 160mm. Thank goodness for their comfort guarantee! On my Fuji I have some kind of velo saddle, but that was hurting my girly bits after my metric century.
