Well, you kind souls here on TE always seem to answer my simpleton questions I would hesitate to ask elsewhere:o, so here we go...

Is there such a thing as the mtb version of "Fred"?

The love of riding my bike from a kid first returned in the form of pedaling in spin class. There is a lot of "whooping" and "woot hooting" going on in there if you have ever been. Well, then I found my road bike. Not really much time to "woot" with cars about to run you over... road rage drivers seem inclined to fist fight  if they take the "woot" misinterpreted towards them:eek:.

But, what about on the trail? Is a "whoop" ok? Or is it being a total "Fred"?

I'm doing a repeat visit to a trail labeled advance with a rather skilled pal this week. Last week I had to dismount many obstacles, but was quite thrilled when I got the gutts to make it over a nice set of camel backs... then a "woot" just flew out of mouth with joy:D.

However, as my friend was trying to call back with instructions on what to expect next on the trail, some other guys were yelling back "ok, thanks honey, for the tip"...

I was the only woman out there. I know the other guys were just goofing off. Later I thought, well, maybe you're not suppose to be a joyful dork like me and "whoop"?

Just a trivial fleeting thought for the TE goddesses of mud:cool:... Thanks:)!

I woot all the time! Sometimes even when I fall over. :p

Heck, we have a trail names "Whoops." So I show it lots of respect by repeating its name over and over.

I "hoot" and "holler" all the time. Go have some fun, girlfriend!

We have a new trail that opened up not too long ago with a set of three whoopdie do's. I love those and let out a gleeful sound every time I ride them.

I'll also give a "heck ya" pump of the fist kind of yell when tackling some hard stuff.

Go girl!

My team memebers and I whoop whoop at each other as a sign of support and recognition while we are racing. Loudly, and with absolute joy...

WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holler if you're having fun. Holler if you've just cleared a tough obstacle (tough for you; who cares what other people can do?). Mountain biking is about joy and exhilaration.

When I went last time and finally did something technical (a downhill) I whooped and then giggled uncontrollably with glee. I also whooped and hollared after making it through a tight tree pass and also yelled "I lived to tell" to my husband. I might have sounded like a goober but I was having a great time. I also squeeled when I got air over a little hill and sometimes scream going downhill that may sound more like terror. Fist pumps occur, squeels come out, laughs bellow and heck ya's are shouted. Mountain biking is very interactive for me and all my senses/emotions. :D

But you know I hear the people who actually know what they are doing making a lot of ruckus too.

Absolutely "Woot" away! I love to hear sounds of total happiness when I'm out on the trail with friends.

I occasionally "woot". More often I make involuntary sounds when I nearly bite it. Usually a quick "Oooo!", followed by giggles when I don't actually bite it. Sometimes followed by a short conversation with myself about what a dork I am.

I also find myself riding alone quite often, and will talk to anything I see out there ... squirrels, deer, the bobcat, the coyote ... whatever.

I guess that makes me sound a little crazy though, and maybe you shouldn't take advice from me.

OH My...then we are all FREDs. I ride 99% of the time by myself...and the yelling ranges from yeahhhhh to 'the four letter kind'. I just can't help it!

One thing I think you don't find (other than maybe hill climbing?) is that mtn bikers, or the ones I have ridden with, often like to whoop it up with you ...It's a great feeling to impress yourself, but also to impress and get compliments from other riders! So chatter and whoop away!

I grunt when I MTB, especially during "power" uphills or tight sections. DH and our MTBing friend Bill find great amusement in listening to me make noises like a gorilla ;)

Compared to me, "whooping" sounds positively angelic!

That reminds me - when I do something like that I say "I almost died" outloud. Doesn't matter if someone can hear me or not.

Heck I WHOOOP when I'm able to just swing my right leg over the seat and get off the bike without falling into a heap.

Whoop away!

Thank you ladies for those wonderful replies:)! It took me a bit to get back to the thread as I was out doing some more whooping, and "oh NO-ing". This ride with the super skilled guy buddy did not go so great:(. But, I will try again. It is funny, as I was fallen way behind talking to myself and nature's creatures, my pal called back and said "What???"... "oh, nothing", I said, "I'm just having a chat with a woodsy critter":D.

Does "sch!t!" - "*ç%"&cloink" - "ouch" count?

If no one is there to watch, does a MTB'er falling in the woods make a sound?

Do I keep my pie plate?

Given my meager mtb skills and the fact I just never find the time to get out on the trails, every ride I do usually involves me screaming,"I'm not dead yet!"

I felt kinda goofy today when I got caught saying hello to a herd of cows by a cyclist coming in the other direction.

:p:D

Some friends, DH, and I rode an epic network of trails today, for a grand total of 22+ miles, 2800+ feet of climbing (and a whole lot of descending), and 6 hours of riding. The defining moment of the day, for me, was a rock slab about 15 feet long, and extremely steep. It was a bit of a surprise in an otherwise fairly non-technical ride, and as I cleared it (thinking "butt back, butt back, butt back" the whole way down) I let out a noise something like a squeal. It was the sound of terror, accomplishment, and sheer joy blended into one. I think three out of the four riders made some noise on that obstacle =)

This is so funny. Man, I totally yell out "WHOO HOO" occasionally when I ride. The funner the trail, the more I hoot. I even sing. A regular chant of mine is to sing the "Rollercoaster" song by Red Hot Chili Peppers. "Rollercoaster! Whoop! Yeah!." Don't ask me why. Other times, right when I start the ride, I yell "I'm riding! I'm riding!," or "We're riding! We're riding!" It's the sheer joy.

OMG - I totally do this, too. "Hi horses!" "Hi cows!"

Yeah, me too. I had to stop and talk to the llama family and their horse friend as my cycling buddies whizzed by. :o

The most fredish I ever felt was when I had the call of nature at the worst time. Unknown to me, a small herd of cows (maybe 12 to 15) got loose up hill from the trail I was on and had wandered down to the trail ahead of me. I stopped to go behind some bushes and while there, heard "MOOO MOOO..." and looked up to see I was surrounded by cows and there were some people on horseback on the trail trying to get the cows back on the owner's property. So I got myself together quickly, and rather sheepishly (and fredishly) was saying 'nice cows, good cows' as calmly as possible so as not to get trampled as I got back to my bike. The people on horseback were laughing, but those cows were all around me and I did not want to spook them. :o Man I must have looked like a dork.

I don't think wooping is fred. I woop and woo hoo when I enjoy the downhill that I just paid for by going up the hill first. Talking to the animals however (other than dogs because they understand :)) is really fred for sure.
