I'm in the middle of an MBA program and was hoping to commute down to Hyde Park in Chicago when school started up next month - it would have been a decent 14 or 15 mile ride each way - great exercise. Unfortunately I just found out that recruiting events start immediately and run essentially through late November.

That means a lot of suit and ties, early morning coffee chats and corporate conversations, a lot of late evening networking events, a generally unpredictable schedule, and a lot of dinners or drinks downtown. It isn't going to be feasible to bike :(

I'm bummed cause I was really hoping to make it to the point where I could do a century this year. Does anyone think its possible to pull off the training needed for one by biking just on weekends?

Totally shameless plug while I'm at it: Anyone in the DC/MD/VA or Chicago area that works for a good firm and would be willing to have a phone chat let me know! (Or a coffee works too). I promise no hard sell on my part - I'm just trying to discover firms that might not necessarily be on my radar. (There are a lot of great companies out there that just don't come to campus, but would be wonderful places to work). For the sake of context, I'm a strategy and finance major looking at, primarily, corporate finance or strategy and general management/leadership rotational programs.

where are you commuting down from? I won't apply to UofChi simply because of location. I was hoping to stay in evanston .

Lakeview.

The location is fine - I think people get worked up about it until they actually go to the school and realize that its a perfectly safe neighborhood.

Not to mention the school is absolutely phenomenal. I spent four years at Northwestern as an undergrad - as well as working at Kellogg for three - and I truly feel Chicago is markedly stronger on several dimensions.

I'm happy to chat more if you want, have a beer, coffee, phone or email or if you have an interest in visiting a class, happy to help with that too.

That sucks. I remember those days from law school well (though we usually didn't have the early morning things, thankfully). Still - the long hours can make it hard. I did have a suit I left at school, and would still bike commute some days (we had a shower too, if necessary). I think you could probably do the century if you can get some training in during the week - maybe get a trainer and do spinervals in the early AM or take a spin class. Any chance of riding early and then heading in? Otherwise, you can probably do it (assuming there's not too much climbing involved) - the question is how comfy you will be by the end:eek:
