Hello all,
After researching this forum and others, I bought my first "nice" bike - Trek 7.2fx yesterday. I was so excited! After I left the bike shop, I went directly to the local paved path and biked 7 miles. I haven't been on a bike in 2 years and I have gained A LOT of weight since then. My toosh is hurting big time this morning - but I am guessing I should let it adjust before making any saddle changes. I also thought I was slow, and read the interesting thread regarding that. One user said that she was going 0 MPH riding a sofa - and that is me too, so I guess I will be patient. After spending so much money, I guess I hoped for a miracle! I am going back out today, sore bum and all because the weather is beautiful here and I want to log some miles! :-) My wireless computer went out on me after I returned home last night. I'm sure it got knocked around after I struggled for 15 minutes to load it in my backseat. I keep moving the sensor around, but still no luck yet. Hopefully I can get it to "read" again before I go out.

Thanks for inspiring me while I was lurking around to make such a healthy purchase!

-Valerie

Nice bike! Welcome :)

Be sure to read some of the saddle threads and see if you can work out why your toosh is hurting. Nothing like unnecessary pain to put you off bike riding... A little sore and bruised is normal, but not numb or badly chafed.

beautiful pic! I've been outside- still trying to get my computer to work again. I know I don't have to have it - but I feel like I do! I have a Trek Incite 6i/8i. I keep realligning it with no success, and have also looked at the Trek website for support. Going back to try again -- Val

Congratulations on your new bike.
Also, welcome to the Forum. It is good to new people. Be gentle in the beginning. I had been off my bike for a while and I had sore tush too for a while.

As a nurse and a fellow new rider, let me recommend putting ice on that sore bottom when you get home (a bag of frozen peas works great). 20 mins on, 20 mins off, will at least keep the swelling to a minimum and make you more comfortable for tomorrow.

I sat on an icepack myself all last weekend after making the mistake of wearing cotton panties under my bike shorts -don't do it! There's a reason those shorts have no seams down there!

Thank you Deb and RedRock. May def try ice now - i'm so frustrated with this computer that I'll I'm going to stay away from the bike until later in the afternoon. :( I can take it back to the bike shop tomorrow after work. Nevertheless, I feel like I've joined a club of sorts which is nice. When I was on my bike yesterday, despite the bum pain and some left knee pain, it was freeing to be on the bike and made me forget how out-of-shape I had become.....like "i can do this again - Yes!"

I agree about the saddle. I replaced the one that was on my 7.2fx with a Terry Liberator. Oh, and get a pair of biking shorts if you don't have any already and THEN make a saddle decision. You won't believe the difference shorts make.

Hey, it's always good to see a fellow Missourian, congrats and welcome to the club. You have a great bike!

Congratulations on the new bike!

For the saddle, do a search of the forums here. You'll find quite a bit of information on how to measure your sitbones for the correct saddle width. If the saddle is too narrow, no amount of riding will fix that, so it's good to get that resolved right away.

I took my 2nd ride this afternoon, was glad for the hybrid tires because it was pretty bumpy and gravel-ly ;-) along side our main highway. My bum hurt so much I almost turned right back around, but I found my biker spirit and went for it! Glad to see other Mo's here. I'm a transplant from western KY - if any of you are out there too.

Thanks again for the warm welcome. - Val

my bike posed again for a pic at a water stop...she's such a ham

I can't bear the thought of you riding on that saddle.
Please, I'm begging you- REPLACE THE SADDLE!!!

I have the same bike (but not the same saddle)

I'll seriously consider it - but wonder if I should try bike shorts first to see if that would help enough as someone suggested. I have been reading some saddle threads for suggestions. I was sure I had enough "insulation" before this! :o

The stock saddle really hasn't been THAT uncomfortable for me so far... it's actually more comfortable than what I had on my old bike, but I think that's more a function of the crappiness of my old one as opposed to the comfort of the new, haha.

For what it's worth, though, I'm personally going to give it a couple weeks and a few rides with some proper bike shorts before I consider swapping mine out. :)

I haven't been on a bike in a couple of years so I am sure that is part of it. I also had a crappy bike from X-Mart 50 dollah! Happy biking to you - I feel lucky to get this bike, it was the last 7.2 2008 in the shop. Did you see the 7.2 2009 ----ooooooh beautifullllllll but not beautiful enough for more money!

What you don't need is a lot of padding. You should be able to ride fifty miles in tri shorts with the right saddle.

Congrats on the new bike, Val. May you have many long and delightful rides together.
In addition to the comments about changing the seat, my suggestion is to give your body (specifically your bottom :)) a chance to adjust to the new demands you are making of it. I don't ride during the winter months, so each spring it takes a few rides/weeks before I get what I call my 'butt calluses" ;). Until then, it hurts to ride, it hurts to sit.......
