View Full Version : Personal, girly bits grooming question

Where else could I get advice on this?

I recall a bikini wax discussion a few weeks back in which some of you discussed going Brazillian. Since most of my discomfort issues are friction issues, and since most of the friction seems to be from ... well, I'll just say it: hair, I am considering going Brazillian/bikini plus for an upcoming long ride. Right now I sugar my own bikini line, and have been pleased with the friction reduction that affords. But I want to go pro (or at least semi-pro) if I'm going to "go big" so to speak.

So, my question is, basically the timing as related to said big ride. Will that freshly exposed skin require a "toughening-up" period? Would it be better to do it 2 weeks before? I could go on, but you get the idea.

Thanks gals! This is the best ever place to get answers to these obscure, blush-inducing questions!!!!

For the first time that you "go all the way" I would suggest to do it about 1 -2 weeks in advance (my first ride after my first Brazilian (only 1 day later) I was very sore but I was also a new rider and got sore anyways) - I doubt that you would need to wait more than 1 week, but you may want to play it safe. . .

Do you have time to try it well in advance of your big ride? Then you could see at which time of regrowth (including day 1!) you feel most comfortable.

As a former beauty therpaist, I would strongly suggest NOT making such a big change before a big ride.

I agree with gilly! If you have time to do 2 rounds, even, that would be a good idea....although the regrowth and sensitivity changes over time. I find that the regrowth generally is not stubbly, so isn't itchy or anything, that the day of a waxing is a no-way, especially in the heat, the day after is usually okay for a medium-light ride... A week later, I'm usually still very smooth and riding is great! 3 1/2 weeks later I'm ready for another waxing.... :o

Does that help? I hope you have time to find out how this works for you well before your big ride!!

Have fun! Stay sexy! Ride hard!

namaste,
~T~

Hi... former shaver, waxer and depilatory cream user here...

Having been reading extensively around cycling... I have found several references to shaving - both legs and genital area...

The books/articles seem to reach a consensus... by all means shave your legs - as far as the bike shorts line... Leave anything above there, particulary the genitals alone...

Removal of hair leads to ingrown hairs... which lead to infections...

I trim only now...

Makes sense, Road Raven. I'd be a little afraid that by uncovering the Most Importants it'd become less sensitive due to friction.

How about chamois butt'r or like?

The thing I'd like to know:
When you trim the shorties are you able to keep them from becomming little partner-poking party-poopers??? My DH sees a trim and goes

DH??

Um... if you're referring to my partner... well, he's seen me in all states of dress/undress as far as "grooming" goes... nothing phases him

I have yet to try chamois butters... I use a barrier cream on ME not chamois, before a ride that will take minimum of an hour...

The  is 'cause my hubby knows how sharp a new trim is....he (says) he doesn't care if it's long, short, or spaghetti :) (sorry-Hair, the musical, reference).

so... STM.... what does "DH" mean?
I've heard of "SO" (significant other) but not "DH"

LOL at the reference to HAIR... watched that again a coupl of weeks ago!!! :)

DH is Dear Husband...

spazz - more in the SO dept than the DH dept (though I've been known to borrow a DH on occasion for heavy lifting and to open those derned jars :D )

Yeah, it was gettin' too hard to find DH's to borrow so I had to go and finally marry one. :D
He knows he's the heavy liftin' jar openin' bike fixin' man about the house! :)

So does ANYONE know how to keep freshly trimmed hairs more friendly-like?? I've looked everywhere for an answer to this but so far to no avail...

If we can put up with beards and unshaven grizzle, they can put up with a little prickly-pear for one of life's pleasures!

Sorry, I had an outburst there! :o

At first I thought well that's not the same as gettin' stabbed in the tender bits but then I remembered where the grizzle sometimes goes  ...........didn't think of it THAT way..... :D

After I heard about the horrors of a Brazilian from my friend... who did it right before her honeymoon and proceeded to hike around Greece... which resulted in a diaper rash essentially...

Well, like she told me... there is a reson you have some hair down there!

I just keep it clipped very short... and I don't worry about skin chaffing!

Well, I am dating someone... so, we don't have sex all week long, or on random days.

So... I always clip the hair 2 days before we are going to be together.

Now, if only I could get HIM to learn that lesson. He tends to trim his area the day he is going to see me. In addition to that... He got bored and shaved his chest and arms... just getting close to him naked it miserable and prickly. I told him to grow it out... cause I would rather he have hair and feel nice to the touch.

Invite him over and wax him... chest, legs, the works.

After he's done screaming, it could become a very romantic evening

Singletrackmind.. how, exactly, are you trimming?

I use hair clippers (like these, incase we're mixing US/UK language ;) )
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0000C6XNH.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I attach a No. 1 comb which generally leaves enough hair to lay flat, (no prickles) and just about enough to wax where I don't want any.

If you don't use the comb attachment, it will be very prickly

Um... have you ever used conditioner...

Maybe trim at a slightly longer length and condition the **** out of yourself! :p ... conditioner helps...

Whenever I wash the hair on my head, I shapmpoo 'down there' too, including a liberal coating of conditioner... I find it helps the freshly mown grass feel a bit softter to the touch - but if you have a number one, its going to be tricky coz there is nowhere for the remaining hair to go but straight out!

A brushhog and a chainsaw! :D

Ok, ok, a trimmer with a #1 comb. I'll sure try the conditioner and maybe a #2. The darn things are so pokey and I'm pretty sure I'm only slightly above average in the hairy person department though I can't say I've been checking!
Figures my claim to over-achievement would be in the down-there hair department.

I use a beard trimmer, designed for side burns and facial hair and bought by BF when he had a goaty beard a few years ago, so it's a bit smaller and not as scarry looking as the pic of the one posted earlier.

This keeps things neatly trimmed, but for those hard to reach areas I use a small pair of nail scissors to very carefully trim underneath. This is not a job you can rush ...!

I also use nail scissors if I've forgotten to re-charge the trimmer and just to keep things in check between buzzing. :)

Well... him trimming his arms down to bare happened because I wanted to wax him!

His hair was long... so he went home to "trim" it down... and then there was no hair at all. I forgot to tell him to leave some hair so I could wax the area.

Now he won't let me wax him... scared of the pain.

How come he shaved his arms? Is he a swimmer or is he just very hairy? Or did the smooth chest and hairy arms not really match. :p
Prickly all over must be very uncomfortable for both of you.

Poor baby :p !!! Good thing Mother Nature didn't trust him with something truly taxing, like childbirth!!!!

Thanks for the clippers idea, ladies! I have a pair languishing in the cabinet. They shall languish no more !!!

I love this board and the crazy turns it can take!!! Thanks all for being so frank and funny :D !!!!
