After lunch today at work, i went into the local gas station to find something to much on around three o clock...

the gas station was limited..so basically my choices were

1) Special K Bar
2) Trail Mix

my question is which is better for you? I realize the special k bar only has 90 calories...and the trail mix has about 240...

btu isn't eh special k bar processed and not as good for you as natual almonds/peanuts/etc?

please explain someone....which should i have bought?

I can't explain the nutritional benefits of one over the other but when it comes to flavor and consistency, I'll reach for the trail mix every time. I ate a Special K bar once and... well, it was the opposite of this --> :p

Whereas trail mix causes this face, especially if it includes chocolate --> :D

lol, i agree about the taste...

plus that, i'm going on a ride tonight so i could use the extra calories...

but nuts are protein...bad before a ride?

Not for me -- a good mix of carbs, protein, and fat sticks to my ribs and fuels me much better for a ride than pure carbs. Payday bars are a good example. I've also eaten a combo of peanut M-n-Ms and Pepperidge Farm goldfish before a ride, which worked well for me. Yeah, not the most nutritious, but it fueled the ride, and I had plenty of veggies and other good stuff for dinner afterwards.

yum, im diggin the gold fish idea!!!

it's good to know i'm not the only one who likes protein before a ride, i thought i was crazy. BF told me it breaks down your muscles...idk weird.

Depends on the trail mix. Especially in a gas station, heaven knows what you're going to get. Sulfites? Rancid nuts? Chocolate flavored trans fats?

Read the label AND the expiration date for anything you buy in a gas station, and if it doesn't have an expiration date, don't buy it.

If the trail mix has more calories than you want, you don't have to eat it all. (yeah right)

Re: protein, a nice tuna fish sandwich goes down way better mid-ride than it really ought to

awesome.

so i had my trailmix...and loved every minute of it... that was around 3pm..

i had dinner around 6:15pm...

my sister and i both ate 2 turkey patties with vegies.

talk about protein...

AND I RODE LIKE A MAD WOMAN!!!

I am so excited to know my fuel is protein before rides, not just carbs...

good experiment, i liked the results!!!

Excellent!

The key is doing just what you are doing -- experimenting to find out what works for you. :)
