Hello,

I want to ride!!... But know nothing about bikes. I live in San Antonio and am interested in participating in this years MS. I visited a few stores yesterday and got a couple of recommendations on bikes. Does anyone in San Antonio or the surrounding area recommend a good bike shop to go to? I am 21 and would like to integrate cycling into my life. I'm a student and don't want to spend a fortune given my budget and experience but still want to invest in a good bike. Please help... I will take any and all recommendations pertaining to the subject. Hope to hear from y'all soon!!!

Welcome to TE! How'd you hear about it? If a bike shop pointed you "our" way, then that's a good sign for that bike shop.

I'm not from TX, never even been there. But if you go to the members map (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=4272) maybe you can find somebody nearby by clicking the nearest "map pins" ...? Then just send them a personal message. No prob here doing that, even if you haven't been "formally introduced" beforehand. Then too, go the the thread above that and introduce yourself.

I agree that one good place to start is with a good bike shop, a place that'll give you good advice, help you find a good bike fit (fit is very important!) in a model that has what you need and is in your price range. So go ahead and ask any Texans with nearby map pins if they have a favorite LBS (local bike shop). Otherwise, the next step is to go from shop to shop and see who takes your needs seriously, as opposed to who tries to palm something off on you that is, say, unsellable or very expensive or their own idea of what you need no matter what you say. Yep, there are such places. But there are also some great bike shops around. Happy biking :D

I'm new to cycling too and have also decided to do a nearby MS ride!

I just bought a Specialized Crossroads hybrid for $360 and so far am really enjoying it. My advice is to be clear about what you will be using the bike for when you talk to the folks in the bike shop (my requirements were for a beginner cycler using road and light trail, carrying a few things about) and visit a few shops if possible. Ask as many questions as you can and try the bikes out.

I'd also advise you to budget in some money for the additional bits that you will need or want for cycling - helmet, lights, lock, water bottle & cage, cycling shorts, panniers, bike rack, computer, gloves, etc. I hadn't really considered this aspect when I bought the bike and am finding that the cost of these other items is steadily accumulating!

Yes, what Jen said! I read once to figure out the most you want to spend on a bike and add $500 for all the goodies. :) Good luck and it's nice to have you here.
