Hello-
I have a friend who is pretty new to cycling and who has requested cycling swag for her upcoming birthday. She has all of the basic gear- clothes, outerware, pump, basic tools- and rides a road bike. I was thinking of getting her either a set of rain fenders (race blades, love them) or perhaps a basic set of lights for riding in the city at night.
I thought I'd check in here for more creative suggestions!
Also, any recommendations for a sturdy set of lights.
Thanks!

"the art of urban cycling" by robert hurst is a nice book for cyclists.
I would suggest CatEye for lights - I like mine and have had several rear light models.
For road bikes, Trek makes a nice little set that can go into the bar end - like the tape plugs - and have two modes.
I didn't see a cyclometer or computer on the list of haves.
Other things I have that I love - heart rate monitor, funky socks, water bottles, gloves.

I always try to buy as b-day present something useful but also something what would the person not buy for themself because they would deem it as a bit more expensive or not of immediate importance...
On that note: how about a nice 'CatEye' computer ... they have simple wireless for about $50 or then with cadence for about $100. Plus if you help to instal it and show your friend how to use it, I am sure she will appreciate the full service...
Or how about yearly subscription to some fun bike magazin? Should be somewhere around $30 .. try amazon.com
Anyway, good luck and let us know what you bought.

thanks for the suggestions! she already has a cyclocomputer, so I ended up going for the cateye lights and race blade fenders. I think both of these fall into the category of stuff she wouldn't get for herself, although it's not extravagently expensive. So I think she'll be happy!
