View Full Version : stuff i found on the road today....

On my very enjoyable 24 mile ride today, I found two interesting things on the road.
First, on a country road, I saw the glint of coins on the road....at least a few quarters, so I stopped to pick them up. (DH thought I was a bit daffy but oh well)
about a dollar's worth of change, but among the coins was this Israeli coin:
6594
Then, later in the ride, I saw a tiny tan round thing right in the middle of the rural two lane highway. It looked like the top of a milk jug or something. After riding past it, I realized it must have been a tiny baby painted turtle, upside down in the road, and it hadn't seemed squashed. So I slammed on my brakes and went back... and sure enough, here was the little fellow, no more than 1 1/2" around, just lying upside down right in the road where he seemed resigned to the idea of getting squashed....
6595
I quickly just tossed him in my saddlebag and continued riding, catching back up to my husband. DH actually never even knew I had stopped, and when we got home I told him I had a surprise to show him and pulled Tiny out of my saddlebag. :p He was surprised all right. :)
I made "Tiny" a little paradise resort tank with water, gravel, and rocks to sun on, and I plan to fatten him up good on worms and bugs and then let him go in a big turtle pond near here when autumn comes. That pond has about a billion painted turtles in it. Usually I just put the 'road turtles' on the side of the road to let them get on their way, but this one is too cute not to keep for just a little while.
Having him next to my desk here reminds me of when I was a little girl and always had pet turtles. I know he belongs back in the wild, but no harm in him having a brief 'vacation'. ;)
Not sure of the significance of finding this coin and the little turtle both today. What does it mean?

Oh, how cute! You girls find turtles, dogs, all kinds of lovable things while you're riding. Why don't I have the same luck?

I dunno. DH has a habit of finding cell phones on the road and once found (and stopped for) a pile of change that included an old Russian coin...I want to say it was a 3 or 5 kopek piece, but I'm not sure..... and he's pretty zippy.

Today I found 20 cans and a big bucket... full of chlorine tablets! A few were out on the grass... the very, very dead grass. So I used those cans as gloves and put them back and now I have chlorine tablets in my garage.

Yes, snappers and painted turtles are VERY abundant in our area. A very large pond I pass on my fitness walks has a log that sticks out of the lily-padded water and in the summer the painted turtles are PILED on that log sunning, like a dozen at a time! I can only imagine how many more hundreds of painted turtles are in the water and piled on dozens of other logs around the pond shores. :)
I was an avid student of local plants and animals when I was very young- always collecting and studying bugs, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, plants....
"Tiny" just ate a centipede. :p
He also did a big poop. I'm so proud of him!

A turtle and an Israeli coin.
He's Jewish. He only gets kosher worms.
Last Monday I found my 3rd wallet that I've spied cycling since I've moved here to Seattle. 2 turned out to be stolen and tossed, one had been left on top of a car after the owner got gas.

Oooh, not good if your bikes are in there. We used to have a pool and even with the most careful storage of the chlorine tabs stuff would get rusted from exposure. Eeek!

Some of those turtles like to eat all sorts of caterpillars. When my son was about 3 we played with a box turtle for hours, and fed it silkworms(inchworms?)
that were hanging from a tree. It took a good chunk out of my finger too!

Are they the septic system chlorine tablets, or the pool tablets? Can you send them to me? We need some for our septic system!

My husband has threatened to make me a sign to hang on the saddle that says "I brake for turtles". I am a big fan! When I see turtles in the road I try to (safely) stop and move them across the road in the direction they are going. .:)Seriously I do have a bell that I ring for DH when I am stopping for a wildlife related issue.
Turtles are quite stubborn, so if you put them back where they came from, they will just try it again.
Box turtles are the state reptile of NC, so I feel justified in my crusade. Your guy/gal is a different matter all together but glad you saved 'im/'er.

I once found a canvas bag someone used as a purse (so I suspect) and it had ten dollars and a single earring in it. And some melted chocolate.
I still use that bag to hold my helmet, shoes, and gloves in.

today we found 89 cents in loose change along about a 50 foot section of road downtown. Good thing we weren't in a hurry! :D:D

Yah! You picked up Tiny! I have picked up a couple of turtles, but they were big enough to know better. No Tiny ones! Nothing interesting has crossed my path. I did see a pair of thong undies on the causeway beach by my house. No, I did not pick them up.
Did you find those dolls on the road? And that pic is kinda interesting...I wish I could figure out how to post pics. Ah well...

On my ride yesterday there was a mattress on the side of the road....looked relatively new....hadn't been out in the weather long. I wasn't sufficiently tired to be lured into a nap, however...

YAY for turtles! When I was back in Kentucky I had the same experience except with a baby snapper...about the same size. I wasn't going to keep HIM, though...OUCH! Then two days later was riding on an old country road there and came across a HUGE snapper, probably about 18 or 20 inches across. I didn't even go near him, but appreciated getting to see him.
Here in Denver, on my favorite bike path, there are lizards scurrying across all the time, and many of them evidently don't make it :(.
Happy adventures!
