I did the unclicked on the wrong side and fell down (to my right) the other night, and bent the derailer more than I realized.
And then when I tried to go up a steepish hill in my granny gear, it did this:

(eep! I don't know how to make the photo show smaller, sorry. Hints, please?)

Youch!
Don't worry about the photo...focus on fixing the bike instead.

That is a very curious braking mechanism you have there.
If the derailleur hangar is bent, that's an easy fix for a well-equipped bike shop. Park actually makes a tool for that.
If the mech cage is bent, just toss it. Bending one back into a serviceable position is possible, but I think bending one back into its proper alignment involves sacred words spoken under a full moon.

Isn't this about what happened to Duck on Wheels BF (Bike Friday)?

What I want to know is, when you shifted into your granny on the steep hill and the derailleur got caught in your spokes, did you FALL? I can't imagine you stayed upright!

Thanks for the kind words, all :) My bike's in the shop, getting a new derailer and hanger thingy. But they said the spoke is actually fine, so that's good!
Amazingly, I was able to click out in time to avoid falling when the bike came to a stop going up the hill. I wasn't going very fast, so it wasn't a big stop. But I was lucky to be able to click out in time!
