GUEST COLUMNIST

I've lived in Seattle and worked at The Boeing Co. for almost 29 years. My office is four miles from home and for 28 years, I drove to work. As the years went by, I found that because of traffic, it became increasingly difficult to get to points north of downtown, so I cut out social visits to Ballard, decided against taking night classes at the University of Washington and finally determined anything north of downtown as something I'd do on a day when I wasn't working.

Good article mimi! And I read the comments too. That michaelsclass is one weirdo!

Always find one or two in a crowd! But the majority are all thumbs up!

Beautiful!!! And I should know better than to read the comments though most of them were good. The bad ones, uh, I hope I'm never on the road when they are driving.

I bet you inspired some future commuters :D

I am still afraid of hills, potholes, puddles and cars. I am still a cautious 56-year-old lady who smiles and waves at the irate motorists passing me. But I can go anywhere in town they can, and when I get there I might be thirsty and a bit winded, but I'm happy and relaxed. And my legs look beautiful!

Wonderful article, Mimi. You summed it up beautifully. :)

Mimi, wonderful article! This almost made me cry: "Best of all, I got my city back." That's the best thing about cycling is that it humanizes the city. I have all sorts of stories and vignettes from my days commuting in DC--people I encountered, wonderful sights that one misses from a car, even inspiring complete strangers to ride bikes.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have no doubt that it will inspire someone to start riding.

Great article! So many people think cycling is only for the uber-athletic--maybe your admission of being a scardy cat will get some people rethinking their own commute!

Nice guest column Ms Mimitabby. I'm always in wonder that people would ride in the rain! It seems so daunting. And yet, you managed to do it more than a few times. The hills in Seattle are just that- some nasty ones and some nasty traffic as well. Neat that you pass the I 5 traffic jams on your rides. That should inspire a few, I would think!

AND note: bottom part the Amici Veloci jersey with your leopard style shorts. Such good taste!:D:D:D
