That fresh jar smell...

I just opened up a new tub of miso.

What a visceral (literally) thrill! Opening up a new jar of some foodie-thing is just like stepping into a new car for me. Filling storage containers of dried lentils and beans and quinoa is just... sensual.

I had a roommate in college who was the same way about food stock. Is it a girl thing? What is it about supplies of food or fresh food that just twangs at the heartstrings?

Don't even let me get started on the lovely ripe nectarines and shimmering salmon at my local independent market today.

I'm not even a cook. I just react to beautiful food like it's some precious jewel.

I had a roommate who labeled and numbered her bananas. She also insisted on keeping all the beer bottles with just a smidgen of beer left in them. :p ;)

I'll visit farmer's markets in Europe when I don't even have a kitchen in my hotel room. It's just so amazing. Then I'm heartbroken because I can't buy anything :o

Love opening a fresh pack of coffee for the aroma, or admiring a beautiful selection of fresh fruit in a farmer's market (which we unfortunately don't get often here). Enjoying the little pleasures of every day life is what makes life good!

I LOVE to be the first person to open a jar of peanut butter. I don't particularly care for peanut butter, but I love to be the first one to stick a knife in it. I also love Schwanns ice cream, the plastic gallon container. I love the way it's all swirly on top, and it makes my day to be the first to stick a scoop in it.

Ditto. I walk through our garden marvelling at the growing things. I am constantly checking on the progress of the plums, pears and apples. I can stare at a branch of them in pure awe. Same thing with tomato plants...or corn stalks that I planted myself.

Probably not the same thing as taking joy in foodie things...but growing food just enthralls me!

I just picked my first ripe tomato in my own garden for the first time in...18 years. Living in CA you have to water everything all the time. Here its easy to grow stuff.

The smell I remember the most when I came to MA is riding my bike and smelling this grape smell. It was so familiar. I finally realized MA has Concord grapes growing everywhere. As a kid growing up in PA we had a Concord grape vine and I remember the smell of those squished overripe grapes. Yup, that's what I was smelling as I was running over squished grapes in the road!

I like the smell of the dojo, when I first walk in: sweat, bleach, a light dust from the mat if it's been touched up recently, candles, incense .... all mixed.

Ponderosa pines, think that's the one that smells like vanilla? Talk about tree huggers, they smell wonderful.

I guess my thing is fruit. I get very excited about opportunities to try exotic stuff like Litchees (fresh) Carambolas, Mangosteins and wild fruits as well.

I also stalk the farmer's markets in Italy but I DO buy stuff, even if it's just a little bit!!!

OMG, yes!!!! Avocados are so lovely!
I bought an "heirloom" cantaloupe and had some for breakfast today. Same thing, just amazing! Cutting that funky looking rind, and finding that amazing fruit inside... wow!

I do agree with the peanut butter. It almost seems a shame to stick my knife in there and mess that all up. But I like peanut butter too much.

How did anyone miss this one? The smell and smoothness of a bar of dark chocolate.

Truffles--the mushrooms, not the chocolate. I find the smell of a newly cut truffle or just opened jar of truffle oil insanely intoxicating.
