I finished on the podium! Second in the Athena Division. I got to stand on the giant Red Bull can! Very exciting. Swim was good, bike was good, run.. well it still needs work. I learned a lot today. We're watching today's tour stage, so my detailed recap will come later.

Some stats:

Swim was by my reckoning 29 minutes. I'm happy with that as I am not working the swim at all. I haven't been in the pool in 2 weeks.

Bike was 1:24. I'm pretty happy with that as well. It's an average speed of 17.5. I was a little faster on the way out than on the way back. Not bad for a regular road bike and riding on the hoods most of the time. :D

The run... well it started off okay. My first mile was 10:31. the second was 11:33. It had gotten hilly. The third was 12, which frankly, is what I expected to be doing. But somewhere between mile 3 and 4 my stomach informed that I had had way too much water to drink. I walked probably 3/4 of the rest of the run course. My students have always complained that I'm a fast walker. Today, I think that's a good thing. My overall run time was about 1:17. I had been hoping for about 1:12. I kept thinking about that article Wahine found after her tri and how she was able to run at slower pace, but still run. I'm looking forward to the day when I have a fast pace and a slow pace. :D

But I'm happy to say that in spite of the run not going well, I don't loathe running like I did after the Tri for Fun. The first three miles were tough, a lot of hills and gravel. I HATE gravel. I'm going to make a point of running on gravel this winter - hilly gravel. I have a goal of being able to run up my mountain bike trail. I've been told that will make me a running goddess. :D But in spite of the gravel and hills, the first three miles were good. AND I felt that way before I found out that I had gotten second. :p

I estimate my total time was around 3:15. I was so disappointed when I came to the finish and the clock said 3:40. I knew I had been slow on the run, but still... When Thom said that I'd done well with a 3:15 finish, I was kind of confused. Apparently a little bulb flashed over my head, because then I realized, "Oh yeah, I started 25 minutes after the first wave."

I'll have pictures in a day or two. Official times will eventually be forthcoming I'm sure.

Veronica-

Sorry to hear about the full stomach from all of the water jostling around during the run. Way to push through it anyway! :)

What were the distances of the swim, bike, run? ( I can't remember  )

SWEET! I can't wait for the red bull can picture!

Just one of the many benefits of racing Athena... I know there are a couple races I've chickened out of racing Athena, but if I had, I probably would have pushed a little harder and acquired hardware.

Congratulations! Great step toward your HIM, for sure!

Fantastic job out there!!! sorry about the water and stomach thing, but you still ended up with a great time overall. And I wish I could swim that distance with little time in the pool. I'm jealous ;)

I double checked to make sure they had me in the Athena division. I REALLY wanted on the Red Bull podium. :D

I figure I am never going to be slender. Somewhere between 115 and 120 pounds of me is non-fat. How can I possibly be as fast as the women who weigh in total 120? Power to weight ratio will always be in their favor. So if they have an Athena div., I'm there. :) The HIM does have an Athena div.

And I wish I could swim that distance with little time in the pool. I'm jealous ;)

I feel a little guilty because I'm not doing much swimming. But I know my swim will not get tremendously faster. Maybe, if I really pushed it and trained hard for several months, I could get it down to 24. So for me, it makes sense to really focus on getting the run faster.

Next season I'd really like to be doing 10 minute miles for this distance. I'm getting close when I just go out and run for 4 miles. But that is SO MUCH easier than doing it after a swim and a bike. I just keep reminding myself, "Look how far you have come since April," because sometimes it does seem a little overwhelming.

Veronica, that's a great first oly!

I think that run time is very good. The run in that race is a lot of gravel and the last 3 miles is essentially a trail run, with no shade at all. (To me at least) those are always slower than just booking it down a road.

Congrats on the podium finish! You GO Girl!!

TBF takes a few days to get it's results up. The overall will take 2-4 days and the division times take about a week.
