Last year's cake for my daughter's 12th birthday had some issues...it fell apart. So I stuck a dinosaur in it and it looked really cool.

This year, she said "I want a cake just like last year, only with Death coming out of it instead of a monster."

No, I am not asking what is wrong with her...I already know that. She is almost 13.

I want some easy suggestions. I looked in a party store and strangely enough could not find a Grim Reaper cake decoration. Also the cake will not fall apart this time. However does anyone have any suggestions that might fit the theme?

What about black icing?

Perhaps items from The Nightmare Before Christmas?? Beetlejuice?

Cool cake idea & I hope it all goes well!

Love that cake, great creativity! I probably would have cried and stressed and stayed up baking another one, which would have ben very conventional and not at all fun. You did a great job. I can't think of any ideas about the Death request...typical me.

I LOVE the cake! Just had to show DH b/c he couldn't understand why I was laughing so hard!:D

I love the Beetlejuice idea. Or... what about Nightmare on Elm street guy?

Here's a great freaky grim reaper doll (http://cgi.ebay.com/EHAG-GRIM-REAPER-DOLL-Goth-Halloween-PFATT_W0QQitemZ110266451321QQihZ001QQcategoryZ33801QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) on Ebay! Yike!!

Or Freddy Krueger vs. Jason stuff (http://item.express.ebay.com/Toys-Hobbies_Action-Figures__FREDDY-vs-JASON-MASK-AND-GLOVE-SHADOW-BOX_W0QQitemZ190212140463QQihZ009QQddnZToysQ20Q26Q20HobbiesQQadnZActionQ20FiguresQQptdiZ184QQddiZ1290QQcmdZExpressItem)

Spend a little time on ebay ... you're bound to find something terribly frightening and fairly cheap!
Whatever you do, show us a picture!
How about raspberry filling that flows out like blood?
Oh.. this could be fun. And to think that I only got a "barbie doll" cake when I was young!:(

I swear.... this is really too much fun.

But I found this website (http://www.partysecret.com/store/c/2741-Grim-Reaper-Birthday.html) that has about 30 items under Birthday -- Grim Reaper -- to choose from. One is a cake topper / centerpiece! And grim reaper name tags!

And what about...... THIS! Alright - -I quit. I could do this all night!:D

It's the wrong time of year, but maybe try looking for Dia de los Muertos trinkets. There are all kinds of figurines and the like that are totally bizarre to Anglo sensibilities. A friend of my ex-husband once gave him a little tableau with a Dia de los Muertos birthing scene - skeleton doctor, nurse and skeleton mother pushing out a skeleton infant

Love the dinosaur cake though! :D

Ooh this cake calls for a Red Velvet! To look like blood! Hey if you're gonna go goth, gotta go all the way right?

Yes, and add headstones with R.I.P. and gummy worms coming out of the ground.

Hmmmmm.....

Two layer dark chocolate cake. Make rectangular hole in upper layer, use dark brown icing to hold layers together. Ice entire outside of cake with grass green icing. Except for the hole, of course. Droop a little bit of green icing at edges of hole. Use one of those over the hill grave marker candles. Voila! Empty grave!

That's as close to 'death' as I can get without looking for anything special. If you wanted to you could make a little coffin that opens with the former age inside, or something like that for in the hole.

Incorporate some gummy worms into this concoction.

BTW, that first cake still looks tasty :)

I like the grave cake idea, with green grass icing and worms crawling around. That sounds pretty simple. Raspberry filling blood sounds fun too, maybe I'll do that next year if she's still emo!

I knew you guys would come through for me. Another thing that made it easier is I don't have to have it until Tuesday now, instead of Saturday. Her birthday is on Tuesday, her friends are coming Saturday. One of her friends is diabetic though and she decided that out of consideration for that friend, we'd have fruit and strawberries while they are here instead of cake.

That grim reaper smurf is hilarious.

As a side note, one friend's mom absolutely hates the emo thing and blames the other friend for it. I agree that the other friend is the emo influence but it doesn't bother me. I had to promise supervision 100% of the time or the one friend wouldn't be allowed to come!

Oh, it gets worse...

Remember, the most effective punishment I've found is taking her bedroom door off the hinges. Privacy is a privilege, not a right;)

Sorry for going off topic

I'd very much like to know the answer to that question.
I think it's the new goth. It's the opposite of pink barbies. It involves black anyway.

Wikipedia to the rescue! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo)

Note that for most people, at this point in time, Emo is a semi-derogatory term for those adolescents who tend to grow long shaggy hair over their eyes, put on mascara, and listen to Morrissey in their rooms. A propensity depression, playing bad guitar ballads and painting their fingernails black is also a factor. Bonus points if it's a guy who looks like a girl. Can also be used to make fun of your friend for being overly emotional/melancholy/dramatic. i.e. "You're so emo!"

Very nice! but it would have been better if you had buried a Barbie and had gummy worms coming out of the grave

I got gummy worms, but they were so huge I thought they'd overwhelm the cake. I seriously considered incorporating a Barbie into it...

Those cakes are awesome:cool:. I bet she loved it.

I'm late on the thread, but for future reference, Wilton is a company to check out for cake decorating. I took two of three of their cake decorating classes at a local craft store. It was a Hobby Lobby. The last course was making wedding cakes.

They usually have a cake section in any craft store, and Walmart also carries their line in the craft department. Less selection at Walmart vs an actual craft store.

They also publish a yearbook every year with all sorts of cakes in them. I have never made one to the letter from the yearbook, but get ideas from it. A local library might even be able to get the book on the tax dollar for browsing.

My kids are spoiled in that I can make anything. One year for my daughter's b-day she was having a party at Build-a-Bear and wanted a bear cake. The cake bite the dusk on the floor last minute. We ended up with a store cake to carry to the party. I just told her that she got her own private cake at home then that she didn't have to share (the floor cake:rolleyes:).
