I can't believe it! I did nine miles today. It wasn't pretty and it was slow. I walked twice - once around a big puddle in the trail - watering gone bad! The second time was while I ate a gel. I had to go past my house and finish off our hill to get that last .2 of a mile too. That sucked.

V...are you, by chance, getting conditioned to do a tri? Haven't heard of your latest endeavors so forgive me if you have to repeat yourself!

Two days post Triathlon. OMG I'm sore today!
Decided that sitting around again wasn't going to help. Got up and set out to do 5 miles. I ended up covering 5.5 miles, but had to walk a lot of it. The heat, and I was DRAINED! I hope this gets better soon! I have to do a 5 mile local race on the morning of the 4th. Ack! I'm going to stumble in last if I don't feel better by then!:(

Jes, it is HOT out. That and there's the delayed reaction of being sore and stuff.

V, 9 miles and only two walks? That is good!! Think about it, in a tri (or race) there are going to be water stops, etc. Unless you are really really really graceful, you are going to slow/walk a bit to walk or dump water over yourself.

No running since my tri on Saturday but I will tomorrow/today. (When I wake up, that is.) I'm actually kind of happy and excited over it all :D

What!?! You mean I'm suppose to stop to drink?! On the Tri for Fun I just took a cup and tried to drink on the move. I think I ended up wearing about 2/3 of the water.

3.5 mile hill run during my lunch break today. It felt GREAT. Finally. Since I found out the mileage I've had a mental break when it comes to doing the whole thing without stopping. See I had estimated it at 2.5 but it's really 3.5, once I found it out I always stopped and seemed to get tired on it real easy.

Today it was sunny and warm, but with a strong cool wind, and the run felt great. No stopping, even on the last Hill of Doom. I slowed the pace down, so maybe that was it, or maybe my legs are reacting to a week of rest (only 2x3mile runs last week) following a tri, but I felt STRONG.

Let's hope it continues... I just signed up for a second Oly Tri come August, and it'll be HOT and HILLY. Oy. What have I done?

This was my "first" workout after being sick last week :D
alarm clock rang at 5am today. Asked myself  why am I doing this, but got up anyway.

I had a glass of water with some rice syrup and pinch of salt (I am trying to develop my own energy goo based on rice syrup and maltodextrin), and was out the door at 5:14! 45 min run. 6K, slow & easy, I felt good while, but a bit woozy :o after.

shower, 15 min re-incubation under the covers, and off on the train at 7 am.

......? shins? will tell you once they're holding up to 60 mins.....

I am so impressed with you TRI girls! What an accomplishment! I can bike and run but not so sure about the swim . I did get my long run of 9.25 in on Saturday and a short easy 3 on Sunday. Nothing on Monday and plan to run this evening at 7Pm hoping it cools down. It has been in the 90's today. the heat just wipes me out. I went to the Yogi /Pilates class again this WOW that is hard stuff. Anyother YOGI"S out there?

Last year during my first tri (and first non-cycling event since I was about 5), I attempted to drink while running. I even thought I could artfully dump water over my head in dramatic fashion to help cool myself down. I learned that I can't drink while running and water pouring over my head moves the sweat into my eyes and it HURTS. It was just SO bad :D

Today I ran hills. I haven't run hills in about a month maybe? I was really looking forward to it too. It hurt. I am actually sore and I don't get sore. I think that's a good thing :)

Here's a few threads with tips on eating/drinking during a run. I had the worst problems with it last year and this year it seems somewhat better. Haven't done any long runs, but the drinking out of cups things seems to be improving. The big tip that helped was the folding of the cups tip. Then you can kind of suck it out of the cup like you do with a water bottle. I don't have a problem running and drinking out of a bottle.

Also, I wear a visor for most hot-weather runs so I find that the visor stops the water from pushing sweat into my eyes. But then, I barely sweat off my face, so not sure this would happen to me anyway.

kimmyt, thanks :D I remember reading about that.

I can kind of drink out of a bottle when I run but really, I'm kind of a spazz. I can't even drink and walk at the same time :D

i'm really not kidding

Got in a brief 30 minutes today! Jog/walk/sprint stuff. 2.85 miles. Felt MUCH better today than two days ago! Had to ride tonight so didn't push it, but I did STRETCH a lot. Tomorrow off, then a 5 mile race Friday am.

BTW... I also cannot drink and run at same time. CHOKE FEST or I miss altogether!:D

Oh yes! I am trying to learn to drink and run but it is NOT easy! I'm still not doing any longer runs but I sweat so much and get dehydrated so easily that I'm definitely better off if I bring water, and also I'd like to get in the habit so that longer runs are an option for me in the future. Plus the water bottle carrier gives me a place to carry my phone, which I just don't feel safe without, especially when I'm running in a strange city (which seems like most of the time these days :()

I have to take a mouthful of water, then hold it for three or four steps while I get the water in the proper place in my mouth, and my throat in the proper orientation, to swallow without choking  The hardest part is breathing through my nose while I'm doing that.

Anyhow... hasn't been a good week for me running, or doing any kind of workout. Sunday I blew off because of the weather plus being a little sore from Saturday's ride. Monday I had a stomach virus plus it was a travel day (between the weather and the virus, we decided to take four wheels :(, at least we could stay home until I was in any shape to leave the house!).

Tuesday evening I got in a quick 3.25 - I was feeling really wrung out but knew I needed a little bit of SOMETHING. Our hotel was in a pretty crummy neighborhood to run, but I managed, and even though I just couldn't get my HR up, my pace wasn't too awful. Yesterday I blew off again - full day at the racetrack, plus travel and didn't get home til nearly midnight.

(accountability post) Thunderstorms in the forecast today, but I'll get a run in at some point. (if you're wondering why I'm on the computer right now, I am NOT a morning runner if I can help it - it just HURTS )

Yesterday was multiple hill repeats with the tri training group. For some unknown reason, I am actually kinda good at running uphill. I was quite surprised. This was a welcome change from last week's demoralizing run with the group; definitely a psychological boost.

Tomorrow I am supposed to run a 5k at "race pace" and then another 5k easy - I have not done a tri before, so it will be interesting to see what my "race pace" turns out to be.

The local 4th of July run today: 5.17 miles (no.. not 5.0 and not even 5.2:p)
49 minutes.

Started out WAY too fast for me -- 8:48 first mile, which is ok, but not to be sustained, and about 9 minute mile 2.... then had to walk -- I was too winded! So I walked and ran and walked again. FINALLY got my stride at about 2.5 to 3 miles, and finished without any other stops, but my time definitely fell off.

Hmm.. seems my running has slipped. I need to focus on 3x/week no matter what!

My time was still much improved over last year's. And under 10 min miles. OK... not a horrible day. And it's over!

I planned to run 3 miles this morning. Breakfast was NOT sitting well and I ended up sprinting back to the house after just one loop.

I did 4.6 km in Edmonton on Tuesday, and 5.4 km at home today. Sunday is my 8k race. More like an 8k run since I've never run 8k and only have aspirations of doing a long run. I'll be VERY happy if I can do it in 48-50 minutes.

Jes, if I did 8:47 mile, I'd keel over and think I reached a Nirvana of sorts :D

I ran 8 miles today, easy. It was fantastic in that even though I felt kind of not all that (been a rough week), I could control my pace. I ended up running it in 28 minutes which is ok. I could have gone faster and there were times I slowed myself down because it was warm and my HR was up. Regardless, it felt good and I was in control of the pace.

Happy 4th, everyone :D We usually go to DH's parents house because they live on a lake and there is a wonderful fireworks show that is put on over the lake. This is the first time we are going to stay home. Due to life circumstance (DH's father is in the hospital) and the fact we are tired, we're going to stay here and see what the neighbors are up to with the illegal fireworks. We might go by the hospital but other than that, we're staying comfy.

Wow!!! 8 miles in 28 minutes!!

BTW - I don't like the way you referenced illegal fireworks and going to the hospital so close together. Be careful out there!!

On my bike ride today, I kept trying to remember the name of the Bionic Woman. Hey, it could happen! Odds are not though. I don't know WHY the theme for the A Team kept going through my head.

Dunno, if it were true I'd say my coach should sign me up for Olympic tryouts :D

Jaimie Sommers.

Loved that show when I was a kid. The writers of the remake couldn't seem to make up its mind about what kind of show it was going to be.

Ugh, what a couple of weeks it's been. More than a couple, really. Didn't even run after my accountability post the other day.

The good news is I woke up this morning with renewed motivation and went out for a run earlier than I'd been in I don't know how long.

5 miles even, from home, felt good.

But I'm going windsurfing instead.:D

Maybe I'll go after. If I have some energy. Yeah right.:D

Did my 8k race today. My time of 46:20ish. My goal was 48:00 so I'm very happy with that. Legs felt great the whole race but they'll probably be sore tonight and tomorrow.

6.5 miles today. I actually felt pretty good. It was threatening to rain so it was nice and cool, but a bit humid.

Today I went and did 8 miles, didn't leave until 7pm when the sun was starting to go down (temp today was about 92 and humid... ahhh Houston!), the first lap (3 miles) sucked... my legs and lungs felt fine, it is my stomach that doesn't do too well. the last 5miles got better as it got a bit cooler. Total run time was about 1:25-1:30, a bit slower than normal due to the heat and more walking...

I need some accountability for my training...I am running my second half marathon in a month and the training is VERY far behind! Before today my longest training run this time around was 6 miles. The problem is that this is the first summer that I am running in the Houston heat and humidity and I am NOT getting along with it at all!

over all I think that I will be fine for the 1/2, but it might not be pretty. The thing that I think will help me is that it is in SF, so it will be nice and cool as opposed to the oppressive heat and humidity I have been training in.

This weeks plan: spin Monday and Thursday, tennis or spin on Tuesday, run on Wed (probably tread mill with hills), and long run either Sat or Sunday... going to try to get in 9 miles this week. I want to peak the way I did for the last one with doing 11 miles 2 weeks before the 1/2, and then take a week off... I also found that I did really well for the last 1/2 with only running about twice a week and doing spin class and biking the other workout days... kept the pounding on my knees down.

any suggestions as for ways to keep my tummy from feeling like crap in the heat? I have tried not eating, eating, drinking different things... nothing seems to help.

teigyr
07-06-2008, 11:50 PM
DrBadger, when I was cycling in the heat I used Endurox in one of my bottles. That would be impractical for running though. I am a heat wuss so I can relate! Maybe call a running or tri store in a hot climate and ask what they recommend? SF temperature might be great esp if you are used to warmer. My first half-marathon was in May and it was in Alameda. It was really pleasant. I was just down in Oakland tonight and it was downright cold!!! I will hope for the best.

I ran a track workout today. It's been a while and I can confidently say I ran until I couldn't really run much more. It's good though, I am so impatient to start increasing my speed.

kg, fantastic job :D

Wahine, I bet you had more fun windsurfing anyway :D
