So I have two friends that are competing at Buffalo Lake Springs Tri 70.3 today. I have been checking in on the Athlete tracker, and they both put in amazing swims (both :33 something), and then waited for the bike splits. And waited, and waited. When the first one came up, their averages were both only 7.something mph. I was expecting both of them to be in more of the 17-20mph range. So I started looking at the other girls in their age group, and aside from the top5 who were averaging 19mph plus, EVERYONE is under 10mph. What in the world is going on?? It looks like there is rain in the area, but doesn't look bad and there is basically no wind. Hmm, I wonder?

Okay, cancel that. The athlete tracker is still showing the splits in the single digit mph, but they both just finished, along with a lot of other age groupers, and the avg speeds were 17.6 and 18.8. I guess athlete tracker was just giving crazy info. Oh well, no reason for me to be worrying then.

It was a BAD DAY out there! Really bad. Terrible rain and wind. Here is a report from my friend who raced today (Mind you, he has done many HIM's and IM's! He's near pro level.):

What's worse than Buffalo Springs when it's hot and windy? Buffalo Springs when it's windy and raining. Those descents were absurdly dangerous. Tons of flat tires and DNFs. At a certain point they had to start sending out trucks to pick-up bikes for people who came back in ambulances.

Yikes! That race isn't too far from me, but it'll never be on my race calendar. It's just a tough race all around- no matter what the conditions. I don't need to pay that much money for a butt-kicking when I can do it for free around my house.
Sorry all the racers had a tough day.
