View Full Version : True Love/How Many Bikes?

You know he loves you when your DH builds you a single speed road bike (39x16) from spare parts in the basement because it's raining outside. :D
Between this and another thread I read this morning, I thought it would be interesting to see how many bikes everyone has in their stable. With this addition, I currently have --- 10!
Kestrel Evoke Carbon Road Bike (for racing)
Mongoose Titanium Road Bike (for the trainer and foul weather)
KHS Singlespeed Road Bike (just because)
Specialized Tricross Cyclocross Bike (for racing - single front chainring)
Specialized Tricross Cyclocross Bike (pit bike - training for 'cross)
Flyte Cyclocross Bike (with permanent fenders for winter riding)
Specialized Epic Marathon MTB
Mountain Smith Singlespeed MTB
Cannondale Ironman TT Bike
Cannondale Tandem
Yes, we have an addiction at my house. FWIW, DH has this number of bikes plus a chopper (and yes, he does have a tandem as well - we have a total of 2).

Right now we have a total of six:
2 road: Cannondale Synapse Carbon for me (comfort is key) and a Cannondale R5000 Aluminum for him to race.
2 commuters: KHS entry level aluminum roadie for me, Kona Jake for him
2 hardtails: Scott Contessa for me, Diamondback for him
DH is about to get a FS Mountainbike and convert his hardtail to a single speed. His hardtail needs a lot of work to be trail worthy again, so we aren't going to put that cash up. Instead we will buy a rigid fork and convert it to be a neighborhood bike. :D After he gets the FS and teaches me more mountain skills I may be getting one and putting a rigid fork on my mountain bike to make it an errand/neighborhood bike. We are also casually shopping for beach cruisers as we like to go to the coast 2-5 times a year. Yup, we are with you!

Would love to add a cyclocross bike and/or a SS to the list, but not in the cards for the near term.....

Between the 2 of us we only have 3 bikes and 2 of them aremine. If I could justify having more to him I totally would have more. I even asked him if he wanted a road/tour bike for our upcoming tour in September and he said he'd stick with his hybrid. What's wrong with him?!?! :p
Maybe the real question is: how many of us really and truly own ONE bike? :D

I need to show this set of posts to the DH who is always on my case for having "too many bikes." I mean, c'mon...I only have three!
Specialized S-Works Tarmac (racing bike)
Felt F70 (old racing bike - I can't seem to part with her even though she's 2 sizes too big!)
Fuji Tahoe MTB (haven't ridden on the trails in a few years and the fork is broken, but he's still around)
I also have a TT bike in my house at the moment...but, it's not mine...it's a loaner! :)
hmmm...I guess I can easily get a few more without feeling bad, eh?!

Currently we have 8 bikes in our bike "shed." I think the builder of this house meant this to be used as a garden shed, but the first thing we said when we looked at this house was"Oh look, a little house for our bikes!"
I have:
1. Kuota Kredo road bike that I bought in 2005 I am discouraged with this bike, it's really too big for me, but I am attached to it.
2. A Jamis Coda hybrid wsd I use for errands around town and riding on those warmer winter days. I have a pannier, lights, etc on this bike.
3. A Norco FS mtb that is not used enough. It's a mid priced bike for this brand, but I probably shouldn't have bought it.
My husband has:
1. A Kuota road bike It's a different model than mine, can't remember the name
2. A Jamis Coda Sport bike.
3. The same MTB as me
4. A Bike Friday Pocket Rocket Pro that only gets used when he goes to Europe.
We also have my son's Serrotta all steel racing bike hanging in the shed. He rides it when he comes home on leave. He has his K2 out in San Diego.
I just gave my older son our beloved yellow Voodoo Hoodoo. It was my husband's first bike, as he started mountain biking before he bought the road bike. Then he fixed it up for me and that's the bike I rode for about 2 years when I started. Last year he redid all of the components and I used it for errands. My son lives near the city and hopes to commute to work this summer and ride on the path by the Charles River. I have been trying to convert him for years!
Someday, I might get a Bike Friday, too.

I only have two - a Trek 2000 for the road and a Trek hardtail for mountain biking.
But I keep them in my living room, so I think that counts for something.

I have 3 bikes - 2 hybrids & 1 beater mountain bike
He has 3 bikes- 1 Miyata road touring bike, 1 hybrid and 1 folding bike. He also has a B.O.B. trailer.

I have a Specialized Dolce road bike, a Giant touring / road bike, a GT "mountain" all purpose beater, a Jamis steel commuter with fenders.
He has a 198-? Colnago road bike and a custom built mb, and a mb frame waiting for another build.
Daughter has a Raleigh mountain bike and a cheapo $25 number that is going in the yard sale in a couple of weeks.
Til then, that's eight.

Just one for me. One Bianchi, which is probably nervous about all the visits to the Seven dealer. Guitars, now that's a different story! :p
How do you store all those bikes? Are you using hooks in the ceiling or walls??

I have four bikes, one is my daughters.
Giant ocr2 road bike, Trek 3700 mountain bike, my old 3 speed, and a cruiser. I just gave away my fifth bike(first mtn bike) to a friend who needs something to get around in town on. It has begun another life :) Jenn

I "only" have three, and I get ribbed about that. I should show all the ribbers this thread!
Me: '04 Trek 5200 carbon road bike (or "Black Beauty" as I call her, love, love, love this bike), '02 Trek 7500 FX hybrid (my "beater" and trail bike), and '07 Marin Lucas Valley (upright road bike). DP has one, a Gary Fisher hybrid.
To answer the "where do you store them?" question: Black Beauty has a permanent home inside the house in the basement; she rests on the trainer in between outside rides, the 7500 and the Marin are in a storage room built off of the garage, hanging from ceiling hooks during the off-season, on the floor now with front tires hanging from nails; the Gary Fisher hangs in the storage room in winter but is in the garage now for the cycling season. I think I might be in trouble though if I brought home another bike home on the "where the heck are you going to put that one?" question.

Two, Bianchi and Lapierre. Well, thinking of having anothe Bianchi join the family soon though...
My fiance is way ahead of me: he's got two Cervelo, a Quintana Roo and a Ritchey breakaway. AND he is planning to buy two more this Summer!!!

Ummmm.. We store them leaning against the garage wall but if I ever get a free weekend I am building a bike rack. DH's road bike is in our guest bedroom because the garage is out of wall space!

Ah, let's see...
Me ~
2005 Terry Ti Isis - my 'go fast' bike
2004 Terry Classic - my steel commuter/touring bike
1992(?) Specialized Rockhopper - my mountain bike
1986 Miyata 710 (or SevenTen) - my 'project' bike
1979 Schwinn Le Tour Mixte - my around town bike
Him ~
2008 Specialized TriCross Sport - his commuter
2006 Specialized TriCross Comp - his road bike
early 2000's Schwin mountain bike
1985(ish) Bianchi Grizzly built up as an 'around town' bike
But, to be fair, both my Miyata and my Schwinn are going up for sale shortly. :(
Oh, and ours are all also just leaning against garage walls (and one is usually on the stand) right now. After we build our chicken coop, the scrap wood will be used to build a few racks.

Guitars?? Oh...geez...the DH has a BUNCH of those!
A Ramierez (classical)
A Breedlove (acoustic)
A Toma (acoustic)
A couple of "beginner" guitars classical that I don't recall the makes.
And a Japanese copy of a Stratocaster that he has no idea how to play, and thank GOODNESS he doesn't own an amp for it!!!;)
And my BIL just started handmaking archtops, so I suspect as some point soon, we'll have one of his, too!
The bikes are stored in various spots in the house. My commuter is in the garage for ready access. The road bikes are in the laundry room for "semi-ready" access. And the mtb's are in the utility room, which is much more difficult to access.

2007 Rivendell Glorius (commuter)
2005 Specialized Sequoia Comp (road)
2006 Kona Cinder Cone (mtb)
1986? Bridgestone mixte (just for fun)
1991 Bridgestone 300 mtb converted to Xtracycle (hauling machine)

Hello, my name is solobiker and I have an addiction. I own "too many" bikes. I guess the first step is to acknowledge my addiction vs denie it.:) I currently own 5 bikes.
1987 Schwin Prelude
1990 Giant Butte
1994 Gary Fisher Paragon
1999 Cannondale R1000
2007 Bianchi Cross Concept
My sister has my 2 oldest bikes now, but I will probably take them back because she does not use them.
The funny thing is when I bought my first bike my Dad questioned me on why I wanted a bike because he figured I had just gotten my drivers liscense and would not be riding a bike any more. Well, over 20 years later and I am still riding:D

"Only" 3 for me (but I'd love to have more!)
Race bike: 2005 Specialized Allez Comp
General road bike: 2006 Specialized Sequoia Elite
Commuter bike: 2007 Jamis Coda Comp
Obviously, I need a 2008 to keep the series intact!

Mine:
- 2008 Curtlo (custom steel road)
- 2006 Motebecane Sprint (aluminum road)
- 2006 Trek 7300 (hybrid)
His:

- 2006 Mercier (aluminum road)
- 2006 Trek 7300 (hybrid)
- 2000 Trek (mountain)

We're both starting to get the itch for cyclo-cross bikes - not for racing but for good all purpose bikes.
As for storage, our 4-car garage has turned into a 3-car & 8-bike garage.

Excellent! More ammo in my ongoing quest to convince my husband that I do need to get another bike*, since we "only" have three:
Me:

2000 Specialized Hardrock (winter beater bike)
Him:
2008 Gary Fisher Nirvana
* I've been drooling over the Jamis Aurora Elite online for a while now; I'm imagining it as a new commuter. Has anybody ridden/owned one of these? I'm looking for reviews, as well as suggestions for other comparable bikes I should try out.

I don't have one - but the LBS manager has a regular Aurora. He commutes 20+ miles each way on it, and absolutely loves us. True to LBS employment, he has replaced lots of the components, but he wouldn't have another bike.
I think Sandra (on here) has one too?? Haven't seen her around lately, but I think she posted a review.
Doesn't seem they are as widely distributed as some other brands, so I think they are reviewed less. However, they have a very loyal following.
Hmmm...other bikes. How 'bout the Surly LHT, Cross Check, Trek 520, Novara Randonee, etc. They all fit differently - I think the Jamis has a shorter top tube acc to the lbs guy.
CA
Four bikes. All mine.
1973(2?) Schwinn Breeze 3-speed
198? Novara Strada (commuting)
2006 Giant Bowery singlespeed
2007 LeMond Reno road bike
At least they're not cars! ;)
Um, I have three of those, too. One is loaned out to an ex, to help with a ridiculous commute. One is in storage awaiting body work. And one is for fun and occasional errands. None have more than two seats. And two are convertibles of the same make and model. (I was a Miata addict before I became a bike addict.)

06-18-2008, 02:32 PM
HA! At least now I know there are other Miata addicts. My husband just bought one as our 3d car (to join the 8 bikes). He is mental over this car. I can't stand the way it feels when I ride in it; it's noisy and it appears that other drivers can't see you very well, because every time I am in that car people just pull out in front of us... I feel safer on my bike. Plus, I don't really love the convertible thing. It gets pretty good gas mileage, though and we use it so we don't have to use that evil SUV that everyone on this list makes fun of (but, we need that to fit 4 bikes and our canoe in, plus to get up our driveway in the winter).

1 car
2 kayaks
3 bikes

And a garage.

06-18-2008, 10:28 PM
another proud miata owner!!
and 5 road bikes (3 Trek, a Bianchi, a Litespeed)
and a recumbent (Burley)
I have an Aurora :D...so does Sandra.
It is a fabulous ride...smooth and quiet and it fits me like a dream. I think part of that is that the top tube is the right length. The Trek 520 had a way too long top tube...
I THINK the Elite is new....and I have n't heard much about it....but the plebeian version is pleasing enough. I'm going to go look up the difference.
The other bike I really liked was a Surly LHT...but couldn't find it in my size at the time....
I also have a Specialized Globe and my DH has a Trek hybrid...but he really should have a vintage steel bike....
also...I don't want to have a lot of bikes...but I can see how you could end up with a bunch...here's my question:
Is the stable growing because you're looking for your one true love?
Aside from having like a road AND a mtb.
I can imagine.... I keep looking to re-create my 1976 Grand Prix 10 speed..(Raleigh)...
singletrackmind
06-19-2008, 05:14 AM
My stable grew because I started with a 35# mtb and wanted something a little quicker and lighter and from that something even quicker and lighter. Each bike still serves a purpose and each is still ridden for various reasons/terrain. The road bike I got to get faster on the mtb. The mtb tandem came about because my son was too big for the trailer but not big enough to ride his own for more than 7 miles and certainly not on the road (he's 5).
Occasionally I get a comment about how it's too dangerous to have a child stoker but nobody says what age is acceptable to ride the back of the tandem. He's gone 2000 miles on both road and dirt and loves to ride.

Wow! Glad to know that I'm not the only household with "too many" bikes (although from what I've seen, I am so far the household with the most bikes )
We do have hooks in the basement ceiling to hang all of them, and have to do it in a couple different places. Fortunately, when we built our addition a couple of years ago, it gave us the perfect bike storage area, and we can hang 11 of them there. The tandems are in another location, with one hanging and the other against the wall underneath. Two more hang next to the bike service area, two more have permanent homes in the trainers, the chopper lives behind the water heater, and the other 3 bikes are currently hanging out agains t the walls. It's a good thing we have a big basement :D.
And our stable continues to grow. Why? Most of our bikes have a specific purpose, and are ridden for their purpose. In some cases, we build up bikes to see if we like them (my new SS road bike, for example). I find that we go through ebbs and flows, but we have started to implement the one in one out rule ;).
I liked PsyclePath's comment in another thread that the optimum number of bikes is one more than we already have....
