A while back when we had the flurry of posts about bikejournal.com there were comments about the slow speed. Just thought I'd let you know that this thing screams now! I clicked the button to download my journal and immediately clicked on my email link -- file was already there. Faster than the speed of light!
I think the owner now has all the pages re-programmed and it really moves fast. He's got some kind of "premier" membership option coming. It will be interesting to see what it is.

Speaking of: we need to find our Team Captain and have her increase the miles. We've already posted over half her guesstimate and spring isn't really here yet for some of us. I'm thinking 25,000......30,000??

03-31-2005, 12:34 PM
That would be me - I was just thinking the same thing. We are closing in on our goal in no time and it's not even the high season yet. What do you think, maybe 50,000? We've reached almost 6000 in a month. That's assuming we don't have new team members (com'on y'all, join up!!!)
Should we have a team logo? Anyone have any picture you'd like to upload (without violating registered trademarks)?

I wondered about 50,000 too......my problem was if we were close, I'm a middle child.....I'd kill myself to try and complete it! (no competition Here!) As for the team logo......maybe the Amici Veloci gals will let us use theirs??....make it a TE Team logo???

I would be happy to help out, but since we are called Team Estrogen, let's ask Susan. After all, we are doing some free marketing for the TE folks. What do you think? Maybe she'll let us be the Team Estrogen CycleChix or something or other.

I just figured it out by looking at the Amici Veloci team stuff. Since I am the admin, I can see where you can add a logo.

How about using the TE "Rider Girl" instead -- this is clip-art that we've licensed and modified a bit. I can even resize it, give it whatever background color you want, give her different clothes colors, etc.
The rider girl is on our waterbottles, tattoos, jersey, etc: http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=6692

Ok, I'm going to give this a try. Do you count your indoor trainer miles or outdoor miles only. I'm not sure I have enough discipline to keep track of miles, but I'll try and turn a new leaf. CorsairMac, when we go out you might have to remind me to keep track of miles.
Also, do you all set monthly goals like Veronica? Does it keep you motivated?
Enjoy!

Good going, snowtulip. I think you can log whatever type mile you have. Just go there and poke around, I think there is a way to differentiate. You realize, of course, that my total lifetime indoor trainer miles are probably under 10, so I'm not much help there.
As for motivation, just watching my relative rank on BJ is enough to keep me logging the miles. I'm trying to stay above #1000, but that might get tough once the weather warms up and I wilt while everyone else is riding centuries. :(
Goals? Yep. Weekly, monthly, yearly, all that. Most are confidential, though. I like breaking the ceiling of goals, so I set a bunch for myself.

I'm certainly counting indoor miles although I think purists don't. This fall I'm going to try to ride later in the season but there are daylight/safety concerns for the daily commute that the mommy in me just balks at. I set goals, especially indoors, because it's so boring and I need the cardio work. I just try to enjoy when I'm riding outdoors and it seems like my mileage is always higher (than indoors) each week because I'm having fun! Trying to keep my OCD tendencies under control!

As several of the BJ threads have discussed - you can track whatever miles you want. Indoor, outdoor, both, tri!......it's a personal journal so You decide how to track it. I set an annual goal and then worked out how many miles a week I needed to fulfill that goal. Since I am now Woefully behind that, I will have No problem reminding you to track miles coz I"m gonna take all the miles I can get!!.......(trying to figure out the perfect bribe to maybe get some of V's miles!!)

Where did you see the big fuzzy photo? I went to the BJ club page and saw an "under view" space. Has this issue been resolved? I love the TE Jersey's gotta get one (soon's I lose another 30 pounds).
on another subject, I stopped counting indoor miles because of the Virtual RAAM Challenge - I wanted them to be all outdoors. For me this had a good side-effect. Not counting indoor biking miles shifted me to an eliptical trainer on rainy days and so I get in a weight-bearing workout.
SadieKate

I think she removed it. Used to look big and fuzzy like the logo for Amici Veloci that is still on bikejournal.com. One of these days I'll try resizing it to see if that fixes it.
maggieH
04-07-2005, 04:42 PM
I doubt that resizing the tatoo image would help -- it's small to begin with. otoh if you use http://www.teamestrogen.com/images/products/TE-120_fabric_lrg.jpg this image which is large, you could downsize it and it'd look fine. But is that a copyright problem?
nuthatch
04-07-2005, 05:27 PM
Jeff, here at TE was extremely kind and e-mailed me a higher resolution image, so our problems are solved. Slantz has to review each image, so we won't see the new image for a day or so.
I think the image looks big and goofy on our team homepage but it will look normal to anyone browsing the team from the outside -if you go to the list of teams and pick one you know has a logo, it looks smaller and better on that public "billboard" for the team. This is just a guess. <<sigh>> Shouldn't I be doing laundry instead of playing with this? ;)
P.S. Maggie, thanks for joining the team and thanks for the suggestion - that fabric girl is crystal clear!!!

Nuthatch - you've stumbled across the Brits' favourite pastime - talking 'bout the weather! Thankfully we don't get the extremes you guys seem to get - but that usually means that we have one season really - as you described: windy, rainy, cold! Here in the northeast, it's particularly unpleasant - gales and cold temperatures for large parts of the year! Beautiful countryside, but mainly because no-one wants to live here!
I've yet to sample the NZ weather, still can't get my head round the fact that I'm going to be going straight from our summer to the middle of winter, in the space of a couple of hours - but I think that it'll probably be warmer in Auckland! The average summer temperature where I live is 15 degrees C(59 degrees farenheit!). Whoopee! Time to peel the armwarmers off!
Makes us more hardy - I wear my shorts for around 9 months of the year - just to scare the locals really!
We Brits like to complain that it's too cold (if around freezing) or too hot (above 59 degrees). If it's an inch of snow it's treacherous - and our local forecaster likes to warn us about "pesky winds" (30 mph gales).
My miles are all outdoor ones, as I don't have a turbo trainer - commuting clocks around 45 miles a week, which is a boon!

A couple of hours? Are you going to teleport there or something? She's putting on a brave face, girls - takes nearly 24hrs just for the flying part, let alone all the airport crap. It's pretty hideous, even if you don't mind flying. Still, it's the only way to get there...
As for Auckland weather, there'll still be plenty of cloud and rain/drizzle, but 15degC is more of a wintery temp up there. Check out www.stuff.co.nz/weather if you want to keep an eye on it.

Hmm, yes - was taking poetic licence! The flight is something like 30 hours all told, with transfers and things. Good news is that if I fly via LA, rather than Singapore, my luggage allowance increases from 20kg to 64kg!! Something to do with all flights to America have an agreed massive allowance! On taking your bike "as luggage"... bikes aren't considered luggage by many of the airlines, they are "special cargo". I had to pay $80 extra to fly my bike with me to CA recently... and then the airlines scratched it in a couple places while inspecting it for explosives. It would have cost me another $80 to fly the bike home AND chance more scratches, but I chose to ship it UPS. Much cheaper.
Go to the site for the airlines you're using and check for bike regulations for international travel. I'd also suggest (unless you already have one) the purchase of a hard bike case rather than using one of those cardboard boxes.
I have a Trico Iron Case, and other than the TSA agents mis-hap, my bike arrived with no extra bends in her parts. She's in her case and on a UPS truck as we speak. You might even consider using UPS for your bike...
SadieKate
04-13-2005, 09:02 AM
Spazz, did you compare FedEx to UPS? The latest Bicycling reported that FedEx was about 2/3s the cost but I haven't done any research myself to confirm this.
Would you mind telling us what you paid including insurance? I'll be shipping to SLC in May and trying to decide if I want to borrow a friend's hardcase or recycle a bike box from the LBS.
From everything I have heard the friends and the shops report, shipping is the way to go - NOT the airlines. Not to mention that the airlines insurance rules are just plain ridiculous.
Veronica
04-13-2005, 09:33 AM
Sarah did you think about driving to Little Red Riding Hood? All the airline hassle is why I chose to drive to Wyoming last year. It did take two days and we had the time. It might not be worth it for a weekend.
V.
SadieKate
04-13-2005, 09:52 AM
Oh, yeah. I've driven to SLC more times than I can count. Only the drought in Idaho has kept us from doing the migration at least 2x a year lately. I hate the drive. If Bubba is driving we can do it in 11 1/2 hours. If Petunia and I are driving, it would be more like 21 1/2 hours. Neither of us do the really long distances in 1 day. I am a long distance sleeper and knitter. This is a case where it is the destination not the journey.
I want to have the saved time with my MIL that we wouldn't have if we were driving. She's turning 95 in July and going strong but needs help with major chores.
You gals will love this. She just went to a pain clinic because she's been starting to have a lot of pain in her hip -- after putting in 6 hrs volunteering in the emergency room once a week. My legs hurt after standing on a concrete floor for 6 hours!
spazzdog
04-13-2005, 12:00 PM
Nope, no comparisons here. I don't care what it ends up costing. I went with the bike shop owners rec. He uses them regularly to ship bikes much more costly than mine. And I wanted it to go ground... if it goes on a plane, it gets opened again.
I don't want no more TSA mens running their hands over my baby. They hurt her last time. :(
As to the cost of this particular shipping I won't know til the shop gets invoiced. Then I'll get invoiced for the crankset upgrade and the shipping... But I'll let you know when I know.
Also, if you're not mechanically inclined remember the bike has to be rebuilt on the receiving end. If you're doing it, pack tools in your checked luggage. If you're not, have it shipped to the shop that will rebuild then break it down and ship it home.
SadieKate
04-13-2005, 12:21 PM
Thanks, FedEx does have ground service but if your LBS said he'd had good luck with UPS that would certainly convince me. I just did an estimate on FedEx for a high end bike and it wasn't horrendous so I didn't have to pick myself up off the floor. :D
No problems with the dis- and re-assembly, I'm just concerned that I'll get it packed so that it won't get squished. I'm thinking that I might just have Canyon Cyclery at the SLC end receive and return so they can take care of any damage that might occur during shipment. Long way to go if your bike doesn't make it intact.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hope your baby is home soon!

Hmmm....We created the club just about, what, three weeks ago? All my miles from 2005 transfered over. It doesn't display 2004 miles and, if any of your miles are indoors, you may not have your "display all miles" option clicked in your "member options" under "edit profile" under the "riders" pull-down menu. Whoops, nevermind. I can see your miles when I go to club home and click on club statistics.

I didn't realize how competitive I am until I landed on BJ. How I would love to be able to say, "on your left" to PKQ. At one time I thought it was a possibility, but since then I've had 2 knee injuries which have really messed up the last 2 months. (my brother-in-law once referred to me as "the kind of person who knocks over floor lamps" - could it be that I'm accident prone? )
I'm going to start riding again on Saturday. On weeks I'm not away I'll need to average 100 miles/week aka 15 miles/day if I'm going to get to Atlantic City this year. I still have a goal of first 1000 on BJ. There's absolutely no doubt that on-line competitiveness has me biking more than I would have otherwise. From some of the comments on this thread it seems I'm not alone in that.

Spazzdog, thanks for the advice - I did check with the airline twice (British Airways/Qantas) and bikes are ok, as long as you supply dimensions. I splashed out and bought a hard case to transport my baby in. The LBS were really helpful and offered to give me a demonstration of fitting the bike in the case any time. My baby will be wrapped in insulating foam, bubble wrap and have the hard shell around it, hopefully it'll be ok :(
It'll be in the lap of the goddesses/baggage handlers after that!

This is no good. Since joining TE/BJ I have become a complete and utter nerd and utterly, completely obsessed!
I'm sure there used to be other things filling my time, but now I can't seem to recall what any of them were! Obviously, they weren't that important.
It was a beautiful spring evening last night, so naturally I thought I'd go out for a quick little spin after work ... however, Nancy's words were ringing in my ears ...
Snappy Pix - you better get going- I'm going to log on another 55 today! :D
Only managed a cheeky 26 (time restraints), but thrashed it like the devil was on my tail.
I'm now so motivated (read: competitive) and driven (read: obsessed) and my energy levels are sky high (read: wired!).
I'm sure all this can't be good for me. I'm losing weight :D My average speed is going up  Muscles are starting to peek out from behind the cellulite  I'm knocking minutes off my circuit time
I think TE/BJ should carry some kind of public warning. All these endorphins and natural highs - can't be legal, surely?

I signed up at Bike Journal!! So far I've only entered some stuff from this month. I'll have to recreate from memory some of the rides earlier in the year, as I'm not in the habit of keeping a journal. The big rides stick in memory, though (62 miles, temps in the high 30s, for instance), so those won't be a problem.
I emailed them to request they add a category for those of us who pull tag-alongs/trailers. I'm going to wait to see if they get that up, then I'll add all the miles I put in pulling my 50lb. son to the park and various events. I felt I should extra credit for when I'm pulling him around :D!!
WElcome welcome welcome!....not only did Slantz listen to ya (ain't he a Great guy) but YOU got mentioned and thanked for the idea!....Wooohooo our very own BJ celebrity!!!
And I see MM as signed up but she hasn't made her way to the TE club yet!...MM - if you see this, you can (if you so desire of course) sign up for the TE club and get your miles logged in with us.
and Now a word from Corsair "momma" Mac: just as an FYI to all of us out there, Slantz runs BJ from his home and does an awesome job. It is free but there is a $10 once a year contribution that you can make if you so choose(it is Not Required) to help Slantz support this awesome website. If ya'll get a chance, I would ask on behalf of Slantz to help support the site and get a yellow jersey by your name! (admin I apologize in advance if I've overstepped the rules of the board with this post.)
PS: if we get 50% of our members to reg - our Club gets premier club status and gets a polka dot jersey!! Yipppeeee!!!!

Actually Nancy they're rando riders. These ppl do something like unbelievable miles in a Day!! they carry full boat loads of lights and all their food, they have very strict rules about support (I think they have to carry their own gear?). Anyway, I can't remember the website right now. I kinda, sorta thought You were a rando rider when your miles first showed up!! The PKQ that Maggie mentioned in her post is one of them as are a few other women and then several of the high mileage guy riders. As far as I'm concerned those ppl are unattainable and are there for me to sit back and admire as I slug my way thru another 13 mile lunch ride or my 12 mile daily commute!! :D I had thought about looking into rando riding - but the closest sanctioned rides near me was a 6-7+ hr drive just to Get there let alone ride 300+ miles in one day and then come home?......not this ol lady tyvm!

And yes, looks like some of those #1-50 riders do 300 miles/ ride. I know people that do double centuries, but past that- pretty amazing especially in the winter months. Oh yeah...does that look good or what?.....as for highest ranked womens only team Nancy?...I don't know if Slantz has stats like that but he would be the one to ask. As for the rando riders being nuts: go look at the VRC thread - there's a rider named ChrisL who has already ridden across the US (virtually) and is on his way back and he just does that for fun. He commutes to work and then rides a century pretty much every night just coz he can! Now THAT"S nuts!

Hey, BG, if you click to view total miles instead of just outdoor miles, we are over 10,000 - woo, hoo!!!
I think those 300 people are just crazy - they don't work, they can't have a social life!!
I wasn't asked to classify our team as "women's" or "men's" when I set up the team, so I'd be surprised if Slantz can categorize them. I guess he could look for the word "women" in the club description but that wouldn't put the data in a database so's he could sort it that way.

Veronica- Of course you are my HILL model (in addition to Yellow our Hill Meister). :) Did you do this on a tandem or solo? The furthest I have ridden is 139 miles last year on the way to Porland from Seattle. I wanted to do a double metric and that was the closest I could get to the mileage I wanted. :D
Also haven't you done the DMD? That's a big one in my books as is the Grizzly Peak century.

It was hot! Too hot for the pink cashemere I was wearing. But my arm got pawed out by a lot of men on the Riv ride. ;)
I've never actually completed DMD. 116 miles, 11,000 feet of climbing out od 205 20,000+ feet of the full ride. I don't think I'll EVER complete DMD. At some point it becomes not fun. That's when I stop. Well actually last year it become not fun about 5 miles before I actually stopped.

Hear, hear for stopping when it's not fun anymore! I was thinking about that philosophy (about Veronica's thoughts on it earlier in this thread, I believe) today while I was riding - about that balance between driving yourself to acheive something and enjoying it. I sure would never want riding to become tainted and joyless. But I have to think about the balance all the time because I'm a lazy slug at heart.
