Happy almost summer, fellow NW Gals. isnt this weather something?

I was really hoping we were done with the 40's, bah humbug.
I got into my full winter regalia to ride to work this morning; hat, raincoat, rainpants, long fingered gloves.... and my hands were still cold!

It was good of you to ride. Yesterday we were in a convergence zone at home so I went from work (not raining) to torrential downpour and semi-flooded roads

On the upside, DH got me a "commuter" type bike. The mixte has fenders but it's a bit small for me and I hate to abuse it. DH found a hardtail mtn bike (forget the brand) with Shimano 105's (I think) at a yard sale. It wasn't rideable so he got it for a good price but he's cleaning it up and replacing parts and it is looking darned pretty :D

Isn't it crazy??? It would be LOVELY to have consistant weather! 100 degree one week...then 45 and raining the next is just CRAZY!!!!

I'm tired of the color GRAY!!!

Yesterday I went riding with Sprocketsmom....we were at her house wondering if we could ride or not......it wasn't raining at that moment..so we said..LETS DO IT.....we changed into our gear....then it was pouring.....we stood under her porch and 30 seconds later it stopped....so we headed out....and it didn't rain (except for about 2 min half way thru) for most of the trip...it turned into a very nice ride!

Weeks of this we've had now with maybe 1-2 weeks of spotty breaks or days inbetween (cumulatively, since April) - enough to cause the snowpack to melt so fast we flooded, then back to cold. I thought the PNW was supposed to have a hot summer... I guess that's still ahead of us?

I'm going to be awesome at riding in mostly cloudy/overcast skies with 20-50% chance of rain and 10-15mph wind from the northwest. :p Only once have I been rained on so hard and for so long that I gave up, otherwise it's "wait 5 minutes for the rain to stop." That one time was "wait 5 minutes for the rain to stop. No, that's not stopping, that's raining harder. What is that? That rain hurts my face. It'll stop anytime now... PLEASE? Fine, muscles don't work so well that cold. You win this time, mother nature."

If that hot summer comes around, we'll come back to this thread and wish for our mostly cloudy 55-60 degree days.

Yup, we will. It's our cheap source of entertainment.

Mimi, I loved your email yesterday: "It's raining. It must be June in Seattle."

I can't believe it's still doing it east of the mountains too! We got rained on pretty hard at Sasquatch that Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. Michael Stipe did his whole set in bare feet and a suit and tie. (PS---so he wouldn't slip on the rain-drenched stage)

Truthfully, I love the climate here even as I complain about it. I HATED the weather where I grew up (upstate NY). This is perfect for me. But complaining is part of the NW perk set.

There's a long list of "how you know you're a Washingtonian" items that my father in law sent us years ago. It's pretty funny and I can try to dig it up for you fellow sufferers if you want. My favorite item:

"You can point to three volcanos even though you can't see any of them through the cloud cover." Too true!

Oddly enough, it was cool/drizzling when I was in the San Francisco area on Saturday. At least I used used to it :D

I think we're going to get a ride in this Saturday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather behaves just a bit.

And I was a SoCal person who hated hot weather. I figured I liked rain, it was romantic somehow. I'm learning the reality of it all :) I guess I'd be happiest if it was 60-70 degrees and mostly clear year round.

It is just hot and humid here in the Ohio Valley. People were complaining a lot the evening club ride about the weather here. It looks like we skipped spring and went straight into our summer weather. I love it!

Sure would be nice if it'd at least be up in the 50s in the mornings! I'm only *just* getting back into commuting for this year in the last few weeks, mostly because I'm a wimp and therefore kept stalling thinking for sure it'd warm up and stop raining soon. Now I'm tired of waiting. But bleh. It's better than extreme heat, for sure, but...bleh. Full-fingered gloves and leggings this morning for me, too.

I'm awfully tired of still having to keep the heat on, too....

The truth is, I settled here because I like the weather too. I grew up in NJ BAC (Before Airconditioning) and couldn't stand the summers, even as a young adult. But this spring here is rather extreme! I'm hoping for 50's. today it was 49, a slight improvement over yesterday

There's a long list of "how you know you're a Washingtonian"
"You can point to three volcanos even though you can't see any of them through the cloud cover." Too true!

Here's some "How to know your an Oregonian" (although it fits us both!!) :) (notice how 98% of them are about the weather!!)

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in Oregon.

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed
the wrong number, you live in Oregon.

If you measure distance in hours, you live in Oregon.

If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live
in Oregon.

If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' and back again in the same
day, you live in Oregon.

If you install security lights on your house and garage but leave both
unlocked, you live in Oregon.

If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard
without flinching, you live in Central, Southern or Eastern Oregon.

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you
live in Oregon.

If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph --you're going 80, and
everyone is still passing you, you live in Oregon.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with
snow, you live in Oregon.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road
construction, you live in Oregon.

If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly', you live in Oregon.

no, ours is different
You know you're from Washington

# You sometimes go to Oregon to return your aluminum cans
# You go to Oregon to do major shopping as often as possible
# You sometimes fear the IRS will catch up to your tax-dodging ways.
# You've been to the original Starbucks.
# You remember when Starbucks actually made good coffee
# You know why everyone calls it "Spocompton", and in fact, you call it that too.
# Canada is a prime vacation spot.
# You have basically no accent.
# The mix of punk rock, indie rock, hicks, rednecks, liberals, and politicos in your state capital confounds you.
# Being able to visit forests, petrified forests, the desert, two different mountain ranges, rivers, volcanoes, and the coast all within your own state does not strike you as odd.
# You don't call it "the beach", you call it the "coast".
# You think someone carrying an umbrella is either odd or must be from California.
# At least one person you know has been hurt by the dot-com downfall.
# You know who Tim Eyman is.
# You hate/love Tim Eyman.
# Real Christmas trees are the norm in your household, and you go to a local tree farm or to the forest to cut yours down.
# You can pronounce Puyallup(3 syllables) and Sequim(1 syllable)
# You know where The Couve is.
# You know there is a Vancouver other than the one in British Columbia.
# You understand why this joke is funny -

DIY Washington Weather Report: If you can see Mount Ranier, it's going to rain. If you can't see Mount Rainier, it already is raining.

# You understand that the above joke is true.
# You go to Oregon for all your assisted suicide needs.
# You can stay home for all your medical marijuana needs.
* You've heard of The Farming Game.
* You know what Cascadia is, and what side of the fence you'd choose.
* You've had salmon prepared just about any way you can imagine and some you never wanted to.
* You can't think of a local supermarket whose deli doesn't serve sushi.
* You go on vacation to California and someone asks you to bring them a giant bottle of liquor from Costco. Or Safeway!*
* At Christmas, you don't fend off fruitcake - you fend off basement microbrews.
* You remember when espresso carts were actual carts and there were more of them than Starbuck's.
* You've ever explained to friends or relatives visiting from the other coast that, yes, there's only one state between here and there, but it will probably take more than two hours to drive to California.
* You've driven in snow and consider yourself pretty competent. After all, you do it almost once a year. Going 2 miles an hour.
* You've given serious consideration to whether your state's anthem should be changed to Louie Louie.
* You've never been to a school whose computers weren't supplied primarily by Microsoft.
* The only suntans you've ever had, you got on vacation or indoors.
* You've felt lucky that, for the last several years, the most embarassing thing about your state's politics was your governor's haircut.
* You're originally from California.**

Being a new transplant to this area, I've got to say...as much as it feels a bit 'cold' to me, I'll take it.

Every time I feel the need to complain about the rain, I just recall last fall in NC - 100+ degrees and flat out parched conditions EVERYWHERE. When even the trees in the mountains are brown and dying...you know it's bad. It was awful. Dust accumulated in measureable thicknesses DAILY.

Rain is good.

I went out running and got soaked :D

After my initial fear of water, it was really fun. The cyclists and runners I saw (one of each) were happy. The pedestrians looked miserable and the drivers looked impatient. I saw a robin eating worms, a nun in full nun-gear (I thought they were plain clothes now?), a parking enforcement officer, and a LOT of City Light workers repairing damaged electrical lines. I said hi to all of them, including the robin.

It's funny, if I am traveling from my car to a building I get annoyed if I get wet. I chose to go out and get drenched and it was highly enjoyable. For the cyclists though, ick. I can run in it but I don't enjoy being on my bike in the rain.

I have a friend with SAD and he's really feeling it right now. It's hard because when he's in it, he kind of sees it but doesn't 100% realize that his feelings are because of that.

We're going to Boston next week and there are days of 90 degree weather with sporadic thunderstorms? ACK! That sounds worse than what we're dealing with right now.

KIRO-TV chief meteorologist Andy Wappler has left the Seattle station after 14 years to join the public-relations team at Puget Sound Energy. He'll oversee its renewable-energy and conservation projects, the utility company announced today.

Wappler, 43, started in 1994 as a weekend forecaster and worked with his father, Harry Wappler, also a weatherman.

After his father left KIRO in 2002, Wappler succeeded him as chief meteorologist.

Wappler, who left the station on Friday, said that renewable energy is a good fit with his weather background. And, "I was looking to do something new."

Stellar 1 here. Member for about a year. Back riding after knee replacement.

Yes, the weather is awful. I rode yesterday with winter gear. I haven't taken the toe warmers off my shoes yet and won't until it gets warmer.

Does anyone know of good bike trails/routes around Ellensberg or near there (easy to get to, ride and return in one day)? I'd be interested as it's pretty easy to go there and ride and return. Except, of course, if there isn't snow on the pass (in mid June, no less). Would appreciate any feedback on this.

Also, has anyone tried a Topeak Allay saddle (allaysaddles.com)? I saw these at the Bike Expo and am vaguely interested in trying one. They have an open center with a fabric covering which should greatly reduce rub and the usual grief associated with long rides. I like aerobars and leaning forward for long periods of time causes some added pressure.
