"Norman Liebow is a veteran of 17 trips from Cumberland to Georgetown, three rides from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, and one trip from Pittsburgh to Georgetown.

Norman will be discussing the history of the C&O Canal, planning and taking a trip on the Canal, including where to stay, what to take, what to stop and see, conditions on the towpath, and the type of bike to take." http://www.rei.com/stores/store_event_detail.jsp?pid=8F40EA75E0A8D0E191B512F4D1B84F38&template_id=14&template_family=webDetail&ignore_cache=1

I'd like to hear that, look around the store and maybe grab a bite beforehand.
Anyone else?

That sounds like fun! And my favorite vegan restaurant is right up the road!:p:p

Would that be the Vegetable Garden?

Yup, but I like Yuan Fu up Rockville Pike also.

My vote goes to Yuan Fu.
I love Italian food.

I'd love to go but 6 hours and 300 miles of driving is a little much...

If he could comment on what size and type of tires and wheels he'd recommend (or positively say NO to) I'd love to hear what he has to say.

I really don't want to ride the hybrid, but it's got the right wheels... the Portland would be more comfy, but I'm concerned about the 24 spoke wheels and 700Cx28 tires...

What to do?

I can make this. I plan to be there.
I don't know if I can make dinner unless it's quick or you make a really compelling argument for me to leave work early (hint: it's not that hard!). I don't know the mentioned spots....our usual Pike haunt is Nuwano Hana - but it wasn't that great the last time we were there....too salty...and Zen, you probably wouldn't like it....no fried pickles, and it's a sushi place! ;)

I can't make it, darnit. My pet sitter is coming over to get the key and watch me and the dog walker give Bailey his subcutaneous fluids, since they'll have to do it while I'm gone. What a fun evening.

I'd like to hear a recommendation for tread pattern. The biggest tire I could fit was 26x1.5 (38 mm), and I had 2 choices: Serfas Drifter (http://cadence120.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=6376) and Panaracer Pasela (http://www.rei.com/product/764318). I chose the Drifter with inverted tread. It gave good traction and shock-absorption, but turned out to be a mud-slinger. See photos. Maybe the Panaracer would have been a better choice.

Oh tay.
I'll be in my casual work duds for hot sticky weather: khaki linen capris and a light blue camp shirt (what??? You expect me to change for this???).

But looking at DebW's bike and get-up...and pondering DH's Big Buzz with it's 25# carrying capacity....I'm suddenly feeling like I'm getting ready for a gun fight by sharpening my knife.

Ah, but remember that DebW had to haul all her camping gear along, too! You're a muffin!

Anyone formerly referred to as a "muffin" will now be called a Princess.
Muffin is far too kind;)

We went.
Didn't really learn anything but did pick up some handouts you'll be seeing
later, thanks to 7.

Deb I think you know as much about what tires to use as our speaker did.
I think it was probably somewhat difficult for him to design his presentation, having no idea who his audience would be. He was surprised at the turnout.

He gave some general tips and tidbits, it was interesting but probably not worth the $25 I spent getting there
That's OK, I had never been to REI before.

I looked at them and stupidly did not buy one.

I was still thinking about that this morning.

Someone may be sent on a recon mission

I also looked at dehydrated food, cooksets, stoves, and titanium forks.
TITANIUM FORKS, I tell you!

Oh, but you must learn to eat pie with a spoon! Or at least a spork.

A most important piece of info for our C&O ride: The pie shop in Hancock opens at 11 am.

Or just take what you have and make it work...http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb14/zencentury/PieEatingContest-1.jpg
