Seattle couple make a 'zero-carbon' move

Strapping a queen-size mattress to a bike trailer with bungee cords and straps Saturday morning, Colin Stevens says not to worry.

It looks like a giant stingray perched on a deck of cards, its wingspan hovering above thin air. But he's done this before -- moving his own bed by bicycle -- so he knows it works.

"I've acquired a nickname from some people - 'Haulin' Colin,'" said Stevens, a car-free welder who tows salvaged material behind him on his bike.

That was just one of the human-powered vehicles Central Area residents Joe Goldberg and Venessa Brown used to ferry all their belongings in a "zero-carbon move" this weekend.

A friend of mine moved by bike last fall. He hauled everything but his gun safe on the bike trailer, even his big front loading washer and dryer. I've included a picture of one load, I wish he had gotten a picture of the big stuff.

Impressive.

At least a home move by bike...gets you rethinking seriously about downsizing belongings prior to move.

wonder how many plastic cartons, just my own clothing and shoes would fill? :p;) And I'm a woman who doesn't do much fashion shopping annually anymore!

I used a similar trailer and helped a friend move by bike. It was fun. She didn't have much stuff. I'd need a lot of help to move our household!
