I'll start; last week I found a dollar bill 100 feet from the bus stop on Swift. picked it up. of course.
Then on Saturday i found a multicolored dodecahedron which appears to be made of some sort of super bouncy material, and when it hits the ground, it not only bounces but it lights up. I have no idea what it is, an alien?
Sounds like something the kitties would like!

I once found a hawk or kite feather which I proceeded to carry in my back jersey pocket for 100 miles (on my only century so far). (Something I coveted for a long time for shamanic work I do).
I saw a second one on the same ride but decided one emergency stop is enuff. I saw another recently and left it too because I turned once but not far enough and decided that it belonged to someone else.
Stuff I SAW on a ride, think that's another thread but I'll post here.
Sunday I saw a guy on a moderately decked out TT bike with TT helmet and believe me, a screaming yellow, shiny, full-body condom. I mean a full body suit. But what the hey was he doing on a ROAD wearing that thing. Doesn't it belong on the track?
I thought I was going bonkers.

it's a little intimidating to them. it's 3" in diameter. Perhaps a younger cat would like it.

We had a gal here who used to (I haven't seen her in a couple of years) race TT's in a hot pink one....
I've found all sorts of stuff over the years - tools, lots of bungies, a few blinky lights. I ran over a $10 bill once, but I was on a group ride so there was no way to stop and pick it up. I've found 2 wallets (both successfully returned to their owners) while on my bike.

Okay, I know this is about what you find on your ride, but alpine rabbitt started it! I was riding with my friends offroad on the mountain here in Flagstaff one day and all of a sudden this OLD GUY comes ripping down the mountain in a really brief speedo. It was almost scary!

I'll have to look harder.
So far I have only had success at leaving things on the road - like bits of my skin when I wreck - a little DNA. And I have lost a blinky light. And a freaking expensive bike computer that I turned around for and re traced my ride slowly for 2 miles before I found it. I got off my bike and waited patiently for the Suburban full of kids to pass so that I could pick it up off of the ground but it was smushed to oblivion by the Suburban right before my eyes............
I'll look harder for sure. I saw a ziplock bag of cheese curds once, does that count?? :p

Mimi: Like 70's - (not that that is really old in age), but when you are deciding to wear a speedo on a mountain bike, on a mountain bike, not on a tri bike when you are swimming too - I figure it's kind of old and odd!
I'm 48 and will not wear a bikini on a bike - it was a sort of bizarre site.

In the last month I've found
* wallet/checkbook (returned to owner)
* green bandana (kept it but bleached it out just to be sure it was clean)
* screwdriver (it's now in my kitchen drawer, thank you very much)
And about a hundred 1/2" PVC elbows. Actually they were scattered all over the shoulder of the road in a minefield pattern but I left them there.
You never know what treasure you will come across.

And we have plenty of rats also. It's interesting, in a disturbing kind of way, to watch them go from freshly killed to a bit smushed to nearly nothing over the course of a week or two.

I found a dog once. He was just running down the street, in a very affluent 'hood, obviously not supposed to be out. He was wayyyyy cute, I think he was a Fox Terrior. When I first saw him in the distance, I thought he was a rabbit, he was so fast.
I tried to catch him, but every time I got up next to him and slowed down, he'd speed up, which made people think he was my dog, and I got scolded for not having him on a leash. I ended up riding along with him, pointing him out to passing cars so he wouldn't get hit (at least he was running in the breakdown lane, which was good). Eventually he turned down a less busy street, and I had to leave because I was going to work, and really, what could I do if I did catch him? I was on a bike, after all. I couldn't hold him and the bike, and walk. So, I left and called animal control. Leaving him was the hardest thing to do. I still wonder what happened to him.

A couple days ago my dad was biking to work (yay!) and came across a dog that had gotten loose from its owner, who was frantically trying to catch him. My dad on his bike helped, basically by chasing him away from the busier streets until he was worn out enough that he stopped running.
We were just relieved that the dog did have an owner nearby. Twenty years ago my dad was out jogging and we ended up with the ugliest, biggest, friendliest stray mutt. "She just followed me home," he claimed. We asked if he was waving a steak in front of her?

My strangest find was on a cold (5F), windy, winter morning. Alongside the road to work was an empty cash drawer. I stopped to ponder it and decided that it looked in pretty good condition, and hadn't been there yesterday when I rode by. So I pulled out my cell phone and dialed 911. Since it was a cell phone I reached the state police, explained my find and location on the edge of 2 towns. They knew a convenience store had been robbed the night before and routed me to the appropriate police department. The only problem was that the police wanted my car license plate and make. I explained that wouldn't help them since I was on my bike not in a car. They wanted me to wait for them to arrive, so I asked that they come sooner than the 30 minutes they suggested, explaining my concern about hypothermia in the cold and wind. I did pull out the mylar blanket I always carry in the winter to break the wind more, but was pleasantly surprised when a police car pulled up within 5 minutes. The officer was quick about taking what information I could give him, looking at my ID, and taking down phone numbers. He also checked that I was ok cold wise before letting me head on to work.

today I found a Nintendo DS along the road.
It works!
It was right in front of SKnot's old school, so I'll be calling the school to see if any of the kids have lost one.
I also "found" ("discovered" or "saw") a cruiser with pink rims and astroturf instead of paint on the frame. (the whole frame was covered in green astroturf!) It reminded me of Bill Nye's grass-covered car. (there is a brief glimpse of it in this video, but I can't find the vid of him driving it around Seattle http://youtube.com/watch?v=ymg7316fDCo )

By George, I found something interesting on my ride today. I found a pair of mens undies, briefs, that were white with red stripes. I left them where they lay. How in the world do you lose a pair of underwear???? :D That's one of those questions that I really DO NOT want the answer to.
A Nintendo DS?? Wow! At first I imagined a Nintendo 64 console - they are pretty big and then I realized that it was a DS that you found.
Tomorrow I'd like to find a big ol' bag of money.

Yesterday I found a child's winter scarf, baby blue. It was in a school one, so I suspect somebody lost it after cleaning out a locker at the end of school. Though it's smallish, it will be useful for riding in the cold. Too small to get tangled in anything.

My riding partner and I get a chuckle at some of the things we find along side the road, and we then have to make up stories about how they got there. Last year, outside a bar was a single high heeled strappy shoe, how did she manage to loose that? Lotsa Underpants-usually all boxers. Last week a box of condoms and several wrapped condoms next to it. Thinking they only needed one and didn't want to get caught with the evidence so they chucked it out the window. A full sized computer console- that resembles a tv, old bikes, tv's thrown out, lots of tires, odds and ends of gloves and hats, and the usual amount of garbage thrown out instead of disposing of properly.

Along the lines of the bodysuit stories . . .
DH has told me several times that he's seen a lady hiking along the state park wearing hot pink, shiney leggings with a leotard, wearing a camel back and using trekking poles. I didn't really believe him, I thought he got a little dehydrated and was having flash backs to the 80s.
Then a couple of weeks ago I did an early morning ride out by the park when I was blinded by hot pink, shiney leggings! Then nearly fell off my bike when I realized it was NOT a lady but a 40ish year old man with a mullet! In a leotard! I saw chest hair!

today I found a Nintendo DS along the road.
It works!
What's a Nintendo DS?? I will guess and say a handheld video game?? (yeah...no kids here, can ya tell?)
DH and I have found several cellphones (3 that worked and were returned to their owners and one or 2 that were smooshed beyond repair).
We found a great big honkin' bible. DH got to carry that one back to the church that was named on a sheet of paper inside it!
It's amazing what people appear to put on the roof of their car before they drive away.....
I once found the rechargeable battery for a flashlight from the local volunteer fire department.
DH found a wind-proof lighter that went to my (then) smoking neighbors.
And we have a fine collection of bungee cords, vice grips, screw drivers, and wrenches, courtesy of the side of the road.
Haven't seen any strangely dressed (or undressed) men (thank goodness!), but I have seen more than my fill of dead animals....dear, squirrels, birds, and other unidentifiable flattened fauna.

Several times, I have come across the odd shoe on the side of the road. How does one shoe get there? Did the person not notice? Did they just run around with one shoe for the rest of the day?
Other than single shoes, we see bungie ties and some kind of white nylon ties that must come off of feed sacks or something (can't figure out why else there would be so many lying around the road in our area). I've almost gotten to the point where I don't automatically think, "akkk snake" when I see them -- almost;) Oh, and lots of road kill:(

Once riding my bike in the Lake Chabot area near castro valley in California, I was riding and a loose horse sans rider came running full tilt at me down the trail. Since I was a horse person, I got in front of him, waved him down and grabbed his reins to stop him. Do not do this at home if you do not know how!

yesterday, just as we passed one of my favorite stores in Seattle, Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe, I noticed a tiny doll in the street. I told Raleighdon about it, and game as he always is; he went back to get it.
While he was circling, I saw a large american car with two happily gabbing women run RIGHT OVER this poor little doll.
Donald followed behind, snatched it and said "It's in great shape!" I found that hard to believe after watching a 1 ton car run over it.
When we got home, he finally handed it over to me, it was a lonely little scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. It's hat is what suffered the most, but, hey scarecrows are not known for their great garb, not usually. The second photo shows him searching for his friends.

I never see anything good. Occasional wrappers from candy, road debris left over from winter, and dead animals. I guess people around here are too conservation minded and don't throw stuff out of the window.
The only time we found something was when we had to pull over on the sidewalk for my husband to adjust something on his bike. It might have even been on a walk, I can't remember. Anyway, we found a wallet. So we got home and searched the woman on Google. She had moved from the address on her license, but she still lived in Boston. When Steve called her, she was so happy; she was leaving the next day on a business trip to Europe and had no ID, so she drove out here to get the wallet. I think when she saw my husband, she thought she might get a date, but then I came to the door...
She had stopped to fix a flat and her wallet dropped out of her jersey. She rewarded our honesty by giving us a gift card to Starbucks.
This wasn't on a ride, it was on a hike, but it was a weird thing to find. My friend and I found a busted-up printer or copier (don't remember for sure which it was) along the Midstate Trail in Rutland this summer. It wasn't that close to a road either (that we knew of anyway). Pretty random.

what, you don't take your printer/copier with you when you go hiking?? good thing you found one, then :p
i found a wallet once, forget where. managed to track down the owner, a woman from the middle east, recent immigrant, who barely spoke norwegian and no english. arranged to meet at a central spot, was met by her husband, heavily bearded and in traditional i.e. non-western clothing.
he spoke flawless queens english and presented me with an excellent, very old french cheese, brought back from their latest trip to paris. that had me chuckling the whole day.

Wow, I love that story!
Some town dumps (like ours) require you to pay a small disposal/recycling fee when you bring them computer components to dispose of. That's why I saw a big computer monitor thrown over the steep side of a dirt road way out in the country last year, on one of my favorite rural rides. :( I bet that's why that printer got dumped.
I have a similar experience to LPH's . Actually I've found 3 wallets while cycling... all three I managed to track down and return to the owners. One had been left on a car roof after the owner bought gas, and two had been stolen.
The story of one of the stolen ones was quite similar to LPH's. It obviously belonged to an older man - there were medicare cards and other things in there, but most of the the things inside indicated that the person was either from out of town or had moved here recently. I called some of the numbers I found in the wallet and managed to get the boyfriend of the man's daughter, who called him. The couple was still in the store where the wallet had been taken and I probably found it before they even realized it was missing. The person who took it probably just removed the cash then tossed it out of their car window a few blocks from the store. The couple was very sweet - only a little English, but they wished me a merry christmas and I think the woman gave me a hug, even though I was still in my wet cycling clothes.

Its pretty clean here in Canberra, but occasionally stuff pops up;
roadkill( three in last month, poor skippy.)
a torn up phonebook. It was really windy so it had made it over about 10 km. I wondered the whole ride. who has time to tear up a whole phone book?( or strength.)
a mans rain jacket covered in white paint stains. I took this home and washed it,and it did me well until I bought a proper cycling jacket. then it went to salvos.
4 dead cockatoos( the power lines. cant they do something about those things? terrible)
One nice cardigan( which I hung over a fence, someones school jumper)
And I do have a possible explanation for pants.
My husband and I, went to a party where we ate some mysterious cake, that had a sign on it - one piece at a time.Being greedy, we ate two( he had three). Severak hours later( I been hiding in back room, afraid of monsters) he came in from cold, with no pants on , just pajamas he had under pants to keep warm. So I said, where are your pants. He smiled and said, Ive been walking around the suburb and I woke up on a park bench, surrounded by kangaroos, in the misty morning light!! So I said, but WHERE ARE YOUR PANTS?!! He said, Ive no idea!! I vaguely recall thinking,oh drat these pants, I dont need them!! and chucking them( with wallet, credit card and three hundred in cash, no less). We got the pants and wallet back( sans cash and credit card) and Im still wishing that I had as much fun as he did( I thought a interdimensional creature had kidnapped me ,and vampires were in the nect room! what a party pooper!)!!! No more mysterious cakes, for me ever again( but gives those garments a mysterious and decadent sort of gloss for me now);)
Oh my!
I haven't eaten any of that type of baked good since 1979 :D

a little purple one.
Yesterday i found earrings still on the card but they were cheap and crushed.
It was a while ago, but I found a nifty necklace. I think it's pretty cheap, blue stones that are probably not turquoise and silver metal. It has little open work balls and flur de lis type hanging bits with the blue stones spaced between.

I was stopped at a light during my morning commute, kind of spacey because I had just finished my Crossfit workout and was generally feeling llike Jell-O. This wasn't on a ride either. Today my lunch walking partner and I were on our river trail that goes through town. A drunk was staggering towards us. He sat down on the ledge and proceeded to topple over backwards onto the rocks. It happened in slow motion, but he never dropped his cigarette. He ended with his behind in the air with his pants mostly down! Not a pretty sight--to see a big, hairy, bare booty staring at us. We asked him if he needed help. He was so drunk he couldn't even answer us. We walked on to the police dept. and told them he needed help.

This morning, I found an ID cluster (about 4 IDs on a strap!) for a guy who works at Walter Reed. I recognized the picture on the ID - he's a bike commuter and I had ridden with him before when our paths crossed. I stuffed the IDs in my jersey pocket and continued my ride. About 10 minutes later, I saw him riding back on the opposite side of the street. He was riding like he was obviously looking for something on the ground. I called for him to stop, waited for traffic to clear, and he came back around to me.
"Did you lose your ID?" I asked.
"Yeah. It fell out of my bag. I didn't realize my bag was open."
Fortunately, the ID was the only thing he lost out of the bag.
I gave him back his ID and off we rode. It certainly made my morning easier, b/c now I don't have to figure out how to track him down!

After I told a friend how I'd gotten into the habit of using the roadside on this Omaha trip, he sent the following to me:
The unexpected benefits . . . when are YOU going to find something this neat? Should be soon, at the rate you're using the bushes . . .
For an elderly Australian tourist on a trip to the northwest of Queensland, nipping into the bushes to relive himself, a sort of unscheduled toilet stop has surprising consequences as he stumbled over the exposed remains of a 100 million year old marine reptile.

On todays ride our club was crossing through an intersection. I was rolling through and spotted at least 20 pennies on the road. I made it through the intersection and had to turn back. Lucky pennies in the road...can't leave them behind. So I went back and gathered them up and made it back to the pack.
I handed out one to each of the women on the ride to put in their seat bag...have to share the luck. I still had about 5 when I got home for my girls piggybank!

On nearly every ride in the urban/tourist part of town: Coins. Sometimes just a penny. Once about 40 pennies. Nickles, dimes, quarters - at least once for each.
A few years ago in suburbia: A nearly full box of unopened packages of contractor type orange foam ear plugs. I spent about 10 minutes picking them all up. I wasn't sure how I'd get them home - until I found the box they came from.
A few years ago in a rural area: A lovely bright red wide brimmed woman's hat - in middle of the road, not yet run over. I stopped and wondered what to do with the hat for a while. In the end, I tied it to a nearby fence post. When I rode by a day or two later, the hat was gone.
A week ago in the tourist zone: A Leatherman multi-tool. The saw and knife blades showed heavy use. Because I had no cargo capacity at all, I'd have had to a) leave it, but I figured I deserved this prize as much as any other passerby; b) hold it in my hand for the rest of my ride, which wasn't practical; or c) put it in the coin pocket of my biking skort, which may have resulted in a torn skort. In the end I decided to d) anonymously gift it to a friend who lived nearby.

Lately I've been seeing banana peels on the road EVERYWHERE. What is up with that? Nobody in my club throws banana peels off while riding. The other clubs around here ride very, very hard and wouldn't be able to peel a banana while riding. This area isn't that densely populated. Yeah, I see solitary roadies or people I don't know in groups of two or three, but not enough to account for all these freakin' banana peels. This week, I even found a banana peel on the road I live on. I've lived here for 12 years and I have never seen another cyclist on my road, except the time I led two of my club-mates on a short cut. So, I didn't find this on a ride, but I didn't know where to post this so it's going here. This was scrounging in our yard yesterday morning. It looked very wild. It was about the size of a large lab, except it was very lean and muscular. Long white face. Ringed tail and large black paws.
Labradoodle experiment gone wrong???? Definitely not a red fox (I've had a lot of people say that). It was about twice the size of a fox and, as I mentioned earlier, it has a ringed tail.

We have a whole family of poor mangy red foxes in our neighborhood lately- apparently the mother was injured and her adolescent cubs all scattered about into people's yards, including ours. Mostly they're being left alone to wander off and find homes somewhere. I picked it up and brought it home - definitely the heaviest thing I've carried in a jersey pocket.
The merchant was not identified on it, but there was a toll free number for a help desk. So I called. The woman was shocked that I found it and was making an effort to return it. DH said the unit probably has credit card numbers stored in it somewhere. I figured someone was pretty freaked out about not having it. She couldn't give me the name of the merchant but could connnect me directly. So she did, and I left a voice mail.

Well...
Turns out our card reader belongs to a mobile windshield repair service. They did a repair, the guy put the card reader on a bumper or roof of the truck or some such, and drove away. Card reader fell off...and viola....I picked it up.
They were very happy to have it found....and we have a free windshield replacement if we should ever need one! :D
What does a credit card reader look like? I'm guessing it's a scanning device?

The mobile card readers I've seen don't look much different from the fixed-in-place ones at store checkouts. Just a little bigger to accommodate a battery and the wireless "stuff," and maybe tending more to rectangular than square so they fit better in someone's hand.
Like most things, they're getting smaller all the time. Waiters have them in their apron pockets at a lot of restaurants, now. A windshield repair place has probably been using it for a long time and so probably has a larger one, more the size of the things you sign on when you get a UPS or FedEx parcel.
So 7rider, you did your good deed for the day! :D

Yeah, at first, I thought it was a calculator/adding machine. It was about 8" long x 5" wide by 3" thick (~20 cm x 13cm x 8 cm), with a roll of paper at the top (the plastic cover was off, but I could snap it back on), but the paper roll was smooshed. WELL,
I was riding along thinking, why dont I ever see anything interesting on my rides, for this thread?( yes , Its sad but I have no life!)
Just then, I looked over and saw a bag , laying in the greenbelt ditch, between the road and myself. So I thought, hmm that looks promising. I opened the bag and found a fresh bouquet of daffodils! So, I decided hmm, I want that so I put into backpack and decided to visit my husbands nanna in hopsital.
Well, it was a epic ride - freezing cold and gale force winds, large hill- but I made it to the hopsital, only to find she had left!
So I took the flowers home, and washed the bag. It looks like it will be good fit for my freemasonry swords( hard to carry those around, unless you have a hockey bag or) something.
I took a photo but will have to post it later,as I am so tired from ride that I havent uploaded pics.
Oh and stopped on way home, 1 km from house and fell asleep resting my head on my arms on the stem standing up!

It was ripped partially open, exposing a metal clip holding a bunch of papers together. I left it propped up on the side of the road against a sign. I didn't want to go opening up someone's package, but there was no way to i.d. who this person was or where he was from what was on the package. I figured out she was going to keep following us so I scooped her up. She repaid me with kisses and gave her back to the sobbing little boys. The were probably 3-7 and of course the youngest thought she was gone for good when she ran away. She was only a puppy, maybe a leash would be a good idea? Or training?

The cutest find, though, was a snapping turtle the size of a dime. I saw something very small and round moving as fast as it could along the bike trail pavement. I pulled over and it was the tiniest snapping turtle ever. He/She was working so hard to cross. I had to help him/her before someone ran it over.

I found a wallet, with cash, credit cards and driver's license. I couldn't get a phone listing, so I went to her building and left a note with the doorman. Luckily the park where my hawks live was nearby and I was still there watching birds when she called.
Returning the wallet in person was fun. We were both on bikes. She's a grandmother who's planning to do a century. My kind of woman.

I rode past a ladies bike today, that was just laid against a bush, just seemed an odd place for a bike to be.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2555/3978364410_24ef3f2133.jpg
One hour later I came past it again and not sure why but I just felt uneasy about it. The bike was not in very good condition but all the cables where fine, plus tyres and there was a padlock but it was not being used.

I am such a http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/Missbe/c8ba8b1490988a48.jpg
I now realise how deserted the place was and that if somebody had pinched it, they would have probably just left it on the ground. If the owner had left it there, they would perhaps have locked it up, although there is nowhere to really go along there.
Then my mind goes into overdrive, has some poor girl been dragged off her bike and, and goodness knows what might have happened to her. I look around at all the bushes and a short distance away there appeared to be a white sheet.
I decided to take some photos instead of touching the bike.
Had been home a short while and decided it was no good, I thought it better to phone the Police.
Very soon after that they returned my call, to tell me that the front wheel of the bike was not working and also that they had checked the area out and everything was OK.
Clock
This doesn't really count as being seen "on a ride", but anyway: when I got to work one morning and parked my bike in our underground parking area, I passed this:
Yup, one of my colleagues taking his or her rock for a ride

On my ride last weekend, sitting on top of a guardrail piling at the top of a hill in the middle of freakin' nowhere (not a building in sight, and I could see a long way from the top of that hill), a pair of swim goggles.:p
So lph, since it's a colleague, you must have found out the story behind that rock? Just ballast for training? ;)

speaking of worrisome
On a trail near our house my DH found a little kid's backpack. It was surrounded by a cell phone and little girl's clothing, including underwear. He really freaked out. He picked up the cellphone to see if there was someone he could call. As he picked it up, it rang. It was the kid's mom.
15 minutes later, a very angry mommy and contrite little girl met him to get the pack and cellphone. Mother said "WHAT WERE YOU DOING THIS FAR FROM SCHOOL?" the girl was about 9 years old.
Lord, that would've freaked me out properly too.
From the bike it seems that the rock belongs to one of the "non-cyclist" cyclists, so it could any one of about a hundred amiable nature-loving nerdy colleagues that I don't know that well...
I'll have to keep a eye on that bike.

Yipes for the backpack and kid tale. I don't know if I'd WANT to know the full story on that one.
I'll have to remember this rock, each time I lament the weight of my commuter bike vs. my road bike. My DH feels that riding a heavy commuter is a fine thing, as it makes rides on my lightweight road bike seem more like flying. If you can slog it up that hill on a heavy bike, think how fast you'll go on a light one! :D
So...no doubt, THAT'S what your co-worker is doing. Training. Yeah. That's it. Training...

Roadkill in good enough shape to return to collect (mit rubber glubbies and bag). Bubba gets the honor of harvesting the feathers for flytying.
And, shhhhh, don't report to Fish & Game, m'kay? It could be a tad embarrassing . . .
I’ve a wildlife salvage (road kill) permit, which I never used. There are always a few road killed opossums around here. There was one right on a sharp corner along the way to my office. Many of my colleagues ran over it earlier. They asked me to remove it, so they won’t have to drive over it again. I took a look at it and rode off.

There is a guy that rides around my town in the spring/summer in just a speedo on his bicycle. He has long hair and a moustache.
He is locally known as "Speedo Jesus."
He's like the "White Whale" (I did put the proper name of this classic book, but the TE forum blanked it out) of cycling in my town. He's elusive and mysterious. I have seen him, but haven't had the nerve to ask what is going on with the speedo. Truly, a strange person to find on a ride.

This is not quite on topic...
While running I found a Bible. It had a name imprinted on it and I called a member of the church in our little town an asked if they new the person. They did so I gave it to them to get it to the owner.
When I say little town, I mean little. Not even one street light.
On our main street we have a gas station, post office, the bank closed but just opened as a car lot, a lawyers office, several small county government offices, a couple of monuments, two churches, less than 10 homes and our claim to fame is the oldest functioning court house in Georgia. They use it once per month to maintain this status, otherwise it is more of a museum.
My other running find was a leather gun holster. Creepy.

If that's the fellow I'm thinking of, I've heard his story.
Many years ago he was in an accident and had a bad head injury. As with many who've damaged their brains, his inhibitions are not quite all there and he was apt to do things that other people would think twice about.
He said he just got too hot one day and that's how he started riding around in nothing but a thong. He seemed to enjoy the attention that it was getting him a bit, but he also seemed a bit overwhelmed by it as well. I just read recently that he passed away and it seems likely that it was suicide.

"Speedo Jesus" resides in the Midwest is very skinny, 40ish, with long curly hair and a moustache, usually seen in a dark colored speedo.
It's sort of a matter of pride around here, if you've seen him or not. If not, you are regaled with tales of his spottings. Like he's "Nessie" or something. :D

I used to live in coastal town with a large commercial fishing port. One day (while not on my bike), walking back to my apartment in a house nestled among the processing plants (lovely neighborhood ), a herring (http://www.gma.org/herring/default.asp) fell out of the sky and landed with a <<SPLAT!>> not far from me. I suspect some poor gull lost his dinner, but it was pretty funny.
Happily or not, I haven't found anything interesting on rides lately. I did find a $5 in the pocket of my pants I packed in my pannier this morning, tho'. That was pretty cool.
And Pfunk12, I am beginning to realize, finds trouble on lots of her rides! ;)

I saw a group of men with guns. They were in a slightly isolated location under a highway overpass. Few people other than bikers would see them.
I'm sure they were plainclothes cops. Still, after I got home I worried about seeing news of an audacious group of criminals who got suited up to commit their crime as bikers whizzed merrily past them

Last week I was descending a hill at the mountain bike trail and saw a Camelbak podium bottle on the ground in the middle of the trail. It was actually in a precarious spot so I stuck it in my bottle cage and watched for a cyclist without a bottle but I saw none. I brought it home, disinfected it, ran it again through the dishwasher and added it to the collection. These are $9-10 bottles, I am sure someone was disappointed to lose it as it appears fairly new. :o
I also find tons of ponytail holders. These are my cat Tortilla's favorite toy so I bring them home, wash them with dish soap and give them to her. I also collect tubes which mountain bikers have an affinity for just discarding on the trail. One day I will patch or recycle them.

keep a couple of the pony tails things in you underseat bag. They are handy for fastening kerchiefs around wounds, fasten things to your frame, etc,
Take one of the tubes, cut it into small sections of 1-3 inches and carry a couple for boots on future flats, slit them into strips, use them as tie ups on miscellaneous bundles of stuff for storage or recycling, tie up your plants with them. Take three cut apart to make three long tubes, fasten the top together with a pony tail, braid them the entire length, fasten the ends together with another pony tail thing and you have a portable, strechable clothes line for hanging things up on without clothes pins, just tuck them in between the braids. Cut another on into a length and use it for passive resistance in stretching and for ball exercises.
have fun and play tug of war with another. Recycle the rest. Mama Gaia will thank you.

Reviving this old thread because I found something fun on a Memorial Day ride: a grand piano under the Brooklyn Bridge. I sent my photos (https://www.flickr.com/photos/8867349@N08/sets/72157644812388666/) and video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juA_YOcoIcI) to Gothamist, (http://gothamist.com/2014/05/29/photos_have_you_played_the_east_riv.php#photo-1) and it went on to become a fairly big story.
This link (http://vimeo.com/97237931) appeared today in my Youtube comments -- now I know what they were shooting!
The origins of the piano remain a mystery.

They staged 88 pianos around NYC last year as a sort of performance art exhibit. They were all outside but not in such good condition. My guess is that this one might be one of them.
Piano project in NY - 88 pianos scattered around the city for anyone to play, now until 6/16/13

I found info about the 88 pianos when I was searching the origins of this piano (but not the NYT story -- thanks!). I didn't know about that project, but I'm fairly sure this one did not come from that source. It's on a little beach where people aren't supposed to go, and it's not painted as the 88 pianos were. Well, it wasn't painted initially -- by now it has graffiti, and someone brought the piano flowers (https://flic.kr/p/nBSJ3s).
There have been news stories speculating that the piano was placed under the bridge for the video shoot -- which I assume would be illegal. The person who made the video put the Vimeo link in the comments on my Youtube video -- but then the link disappeared. Maybe he feared legal action?
