I read the post about eye watering and it made me think about my problem while riding.

I know this is gross, but do any of the rest of you have an over abundance of mucus production during riding. I swear I can be perfectly clear, blow my nose and make sure I can breath well, but I get a few miles down the road and I need to blow my nose again already. It drives me crazy, I'm constantly sniffling and I feel like it affects my breathing ability to an extent while riding.
My husband doesn't have this problem, and I have never heard anyone else complain of this but me. Am I all alone in this and just weird? LOL

Yep, I get a runny nose too. It helps if I take a Claritan before I ride. I forget to take it half the time though, so I've started carrying them in my handlebar bag.

Whenver I exercise my nose runs like crazy.

Search for the word "rocket" on this forum. :)

That reminds me, I need to wash my gloves.

I suspect lots of people get runny noses, since most of the cycling gloves I've seen have soft, towel-like cloth on the back of the thumb.

<------ changed my title (and thoroughly washed my gloves :p) after this weekend

There's even a name for it, exercise-induced rhinitis, and it's very common. The most frequent form is a runny nose that doesn't interfere with breathing, but congestion is common, too. Try using a neti pot (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=20616&highlight=neti) before your workout.

Me too!!! my nose runs during every ride. My little Bento Box always has tissues.

My nose also runs when I eat.

Gloves and sometiems jerseys are designed with wiping surfaces.

In my breathing class we learned most poeple have a preferred nostril fo rbreathing. This came as no surprise to me since I rocket so much better from the left. I'm grateful that things tend to be easily dismissed in that fashion and that I do so much riding out in the cornfields.

I love my air hanky. My nose runs all the time and it's a relief when I'm bicycling and can just snort it out. Sometimes when I'm walking down the sidewalk in polite company I have to remind myself it's not appropriate.

You girls crack me up!!! I remember a long time ago reading about the snot rockets now that it has been mentioned. I actually tried it once. Sorry, I wasn't pretty, and I won't try it again. LOL

I have a rack with a bag on the back and I carry tissues with me, I just get tired of having to stop to blow my nose. I will have to try the neti pot that oakleaf suggested and see if it helps.

It doesn't make me want to stop riding, I just wondered why in the world this over production of mucus happens while exercising.
As far as fall or spring, it doesn't matter for me, it happens always.

I carry at least three tissues in my bento box and each one is throughly used by the end of the ride. I have to wash my gloves after I ride too as they are the backup wipes. Snot rockets come next. One windy day I was covered in snot from the top of my head to my hips. Even my jactet had to go in the wash after that ride. Good luck to you!

Put my nose down as being a runny one when riding or doing any sort of exercise! A PE teacher that Joe and I used to ride mountain bikes with said runny noses meant an allergic reaction to exercise! I don't know if he was pulling my leg or if he was being serious. He sure kept a straight face and continued to explain about something being released into your blood system when you exercise and this causes a sort of (not serious) allergic reaction causing the nose to run. Now was he telling the truth? To this day I never knew if I should have believed him?!

Oh and I carry tissues with me. Or just wipe my nose on my glove!

I thought I was the only one who suffered from stuff pouring out my nose while riding. It happens every time I ride and it does not matter the time of year or the weather. I blow 3 or 4 snot rockets a minute! It isn't really like snot, more like water. My hubby won't even touch my bike when I get home because it is so covered in residue. So you all are saying that a neti pot before I ride will keep my nose from pouring liquid? I am tired of sniffling and blowing and having a raw nose every time I ride.

At the beginning to middle of my rides, I am an expert at snot rockets! Ok, some get blocked by my right sleeve/shoulder but for the most part they end up right where I want them..on the ground behind me. After awhile, my nose stops running and I can ride in peace. I used to stop and blow my nose all the time, it just got where I ran out of kleenex's and I would wash a few and it just got to be too time consuming. I can multi task by blowing and riding at the same time.

:D

It's pollen season. ;) I found using my sinus rinse (similar to a neti pot) helps reduce the inflammation in my nose, thus reducing the snot. I also use it after a ride to clean the spring pollens. So far it helps tremendously. Hubby heard on NPR that using a rinse definitely decreases colds and flus and the body builds higher levels of albumin to ward off illness.

It is nice to know that I am not the only one. DH thinks I am crazy and that something must be wrong as it does not happen to him. Thanks for making me feel normal and as a reminder to wash my gloves:)

I have really bad sinuses from a car wreck and always have the runny nose. I have found something that helps without making me stoned. Its called cordiseps sinesis. Its a root and you can buy it in pill form and it is also in optygens. It really helps the sinuses. It doesn't make you dry just not runny. Oh and if you do get a runny nose, don't blow when you are pulling your husband. Oops!

Wow Clock - you must live a sheltered life. Snot rockets have been a part of my life for 20 years or more. And before that they just didn't have a name! Sometimes I can shoot them properly, and sometimes I just wear them - ya never can tell! I get the exercise-induced runny nose (and when I eat). I hate it, but it isn't as bad as it sounds like some people have it.

What is really unpleasant is when I ride with DH and he rides on up ahead to shoot a Snot Rocket, which splats where he wants it, but sprays up on me. Just a fine mist that you wouldn't even feel if you didn't know what was happening. Grrrr. Usually he drops back to do it, but not always (got me last Saturday). After nearly 18 years of marriage, you'd think I'd have him trained better by now.

I'll have to try the neti pot. I can't believe the amount of snot I produce when I ride.

if it really troubles you, you can get atrovent nasal spray from your doctor to stop this and just have a squirt before you ride--

This is the first I've heard of Snot Rockets. Where I'm from they are called Farmers Blows. I'm from Iowa, imagine that!

I'm changing the subject a bit but your comments have me wondering - how do you wash your gloves? Mine are getting stinky. Machine washable or hand wash in the sink?

I do either depending on whether I have clothes to wash anyway. Just no dryer.

Got me thinking... why not just wash my gloves as I wash my hands (under the running water, gloves on, with soap) and hang to dry... and then throw in the machine when I actually do a wash.

I agree: no dryer.

This has been a very funny thread. I get runny noses while running and sometimes while riding. Usually the farmer snort (my husband's term) works out on the bike. RAGBRAI is full of people, however, and I had to be very careful then. About the gloves, by the end of RAGBRAI, they actually smelled bad. Somebody else in our group made the same comment about her gloves, so I wasn't alone in that respect. I think it was because everything was always slightly damp, and they never dried out overnight. I washed them in the washer, and now they are odor free.

On "polite snot rockets:"

The other day I was commuting home from work, taking the long route, which includes a 10 km stretch without a stop pretty much. I was passed by a "mature" (nearing 50, I think) roadie. Soon after passing me he made it clear that he was happy to have me drafting off his wheel, so I hung on. I noticed that he had to empty his nostrils a number of times, but he did it extremely politely, I don't know exactly how he did this but basically there was nothing flying in my direction, but he seemed to spare his bike, too. I was trying to crack his secret when he took a left turn (I was going straight) and said goodbye. What a gentleman.

Any clues?

I have to admit I'm pretty good at it. People want to 'shoot' behind them. The secret is to shoot straight down and to the side just enough to miss your leg.

This will come up again in late October or November. I'm psychic. I know this.

This is so gross but so funny.

I'm so glad to hear about this from others, and especially that your noses run when you eat! I thought I was just weird. I hate that more than a runny nose while exercising. I also have allergies and cough a lot while riding or spinning, so i have an inhaler, which helps. Once I developed exercise induced hives. That wasn't so much fun and I was very relieved when they went away after several months.

I learned my snot rocket skills hiking and backpacking. Comes in handy, especially when it's really cold! I had to wash my gloves the other day, too. They were getting nasty. For some reason road riding makes me snottier than mountain ever did.

I suffer from this problem more in spring and fall. My snot rockets usually go where I want them, but, now and then, I have hit my shoulder or, worse, my sunglasses. I always carry a tissue in my right back pocket to "clean-up" with plus spares in my pack. I try to avoid using the gloves and reserve them for face-sweat wiping.

Glad it's not time for lunch yet.

I'm laughing so hard my nose is running!

I can only do snot rockets from my left nostril. It's like there isn't enough pressure to do them out of the right and I just end up blowing my nose on my face. My failed rockets have pretty much hit every part of my body. Every time I blow a snot rocket, I comment out loud to myself about how gross it is.

Oh, and I've been snot rocketed by other riders twice now. One lady got me good on the bike trail...I felt it hit my legs and arms and face. The trail is busy and I personally think you should check behind you before you blow a rocket. She wasn't at all apologetic. A guy got me on the road but he had no idea I was back there. It's rare to come upon another cyclist riding around here so I wouldn't have expected him to check first.

I am not sure exactly myself. It seems to have something to do with failure to properly and completely seal off the other nostril and a lack of air pressure on the blow. There might be a tailwind involved too.;)

Got the right side working, hitting the ground and not me. Check! Not sure where my technique is failing on the left... must be in the wrist... hopefully soon I will have this stuff firing out of both nostrils.

If it's below 80 degrees, my nose runs like a river when I'm riding.

Even when I ride the trainer indoors, with the AC set at 77 degrees and a fan on my face, my nose runs.

I bought a Bento box for the purpose of putting tissues in there. That way I can blow my nose while I ride. I can't do the farmer snot blow, so I use tissues.

I put a glove through the dryer by accident. It shrunk. Unevenly. I kept wearing it because it's my favorite pair of gloves ever. Then, doing the STP, it literally ripped up the side (see below) Pearl Izumi gave me a new pair of gloves free, but they don't have the right padding anymore :( I'm very particular about padding, and all I can find is the stupid gloves with three little tiny pads, rather than padding over the entire palm.

Not to be too modest here, but I'm a darn good snot rocketeer and spitter myself. It started when I was running -- my nose runs while I exercise too -- and I just honed it with cycling. One trick that helps is to let a big glob of snot sort of build up in your nostril (if it's not too runny) and then blow vigorously, rather than blowing the instant it starts feeling runny.
