From the backup, I'd guess they held up traffic for just a few minutes.

Re: helmets. One of the things that absolutely freaked me out about riding in Germany was that no-one wore helmets. (I didn't have one, and rode my borrowed Pegasus bike bareheaded... scary, but like being a kid again)
