The LAB's training video Enjoy the Ride! has a couple of shots from the DC bike paths showing a fellow motoring along the path with a prosthetic leg (An extract is here, the DVD contains both this short and amuch longer version: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/education/shortversion.wmv) ...

And in other news, Walter Reed Army Hospital is using cycling as a form of therapy for amputee s and other disabled vets to regain fitness and pick up a useful skill.

That guy reminds me of two separate incidents - both of which readjusted my attitude.

1) We were driving through the Colorado Rockies (Wolf Creek Pass? maybe) and stopped to eat. We noticed a guy on a road bike with one prosthetic leg trucking up the pass - making darn good time. We were impressed.

2) We were hiking up Mt. Blanca, struggling and gasping for breath when we were passed by a guy with one leg. Man, could he USE his crutches - he was taking strides racehorses would be proud of, uphill, on a rocky trail.

Yeah, DH & I are wimps.

big deal...i'm a cat 1 racer without legs or arms...i pedal with a prosthetic and steer with my teeth! and they're not even my teeth...they're dentures...

I came home from the youth baseball park last night after being threatened with a lawsuit over the size of the umpire's strike zone, and yelled at by a bombastic fat man, and immediately re-watched that video.

Living well is the best revenge!

I am reminded of this every time I see the paraplegic tri athlete pushing himself down Lowell Rd., in all kinds of weather. I have been passed by him many times...
