I think I would prefer a pair of long loose-fitting shorts, or knee-length capri, over lycra shorts. I re-entered cycling last year on a hybrid and at the time I bought a pair of C9 capris at Target. They've served me well and are very comfortable, but the flared hem occasionally catches on the bottle cage. I'm considering cutting the legs and hemming them to just at the knee which is where they come when I roll them up. I'm fair-skinned and would prefer the extra protection and comfort over fashion.

Can anyone recommend a brand you like? I like the look of long MTB shorts, or some of the shorter capri pants that come to the knee.

I've been itching to get a pair of Loeka shorts. Haven't tried them, but they look nice!

I tried these (http://www.zoic.com/WBKnicks.html) on last weekend and really liked the way that they fit.

I got a pair of those Pearl Izumi Versa capris that you told us about in a previous post. I haven't ridden in them yet, but I will. They are cute, but the interior shorts seem a bit too short (can't see them, but I can feel them). We'll see if it becomes an issue.

I don't wear the liner shorts with mine. I've got Ibex Roaster boxers and plain ol' UnderArmour compression shorts that work great under the PI capris and the Harlot Habits. (liner shorts never fit me right, and most modern chamois don't fit me at all anyway)

Yen, I recently purchased these (http://www.terrybicycles.com/detail.html?item_no=1856&c=Apparel) from Terry. It has a roomy full leg, it's stretchy and come with a removable meshy liner. These capris hit about mid calf on me (I'm 5'6"). I don't know how bomb proof they are, but they make great 'tween season wear. There are nice details to this capri--reflective tape, snaps at the knees, wide waist band, and cargo pockets. This style is also available in a baggy short with a 10" inseam. If you order this, order one size down. :)

For me, the whole point is to have some chamois. Otherwise, I wouldn't spend $85 on pants. If these don't work out, I'll just remove the liner shorts and wear my regular cycling shorts underneath and consider it a lesson learned.

These (http://www.rei.com/product/764346) look interesting. Haven't tried them, but I may use my 20% off coupon and give them a shot.

Helloooo? Anyone shop at our own TE? I've wanted to try Mt. Borah baggies, think they are even made in the good ol' USA

I bought those PI Versa capris from TE. They are too big, though, so I'm going to return them. No time to get another size before my trip, though.

I've got a pair of those which I have worn for more thqn two seasons. You have to be careful putting them on, though; I managed to put my finger right through the delicate inner liner the first time I put them on. They've held together just fine in spite of the breach. Very comfy shorts.

I spent a good amount of time shopping last night and think I've narrowed my choice down to these (http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=18053).
Not exactly baggy but not tight lycra road shorts.

I've been doing a lot of shopping lately, and today my TE order arrived :) KNEE WARMERS! woo hoo! Maybe these ones won't keep falling down on me.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

I'm looking at all your suggestions and of course everything here at TE (the first place I look). I tried on a pair of Sheebest MTB shorts (lined with nice padding) but they were too small for me.... do the clothes in that line typically fit smaller? So it's off to REI tomorrow hoping I'll find something I can ride on an organized ride on Sunday. WHY did I wait until the last minute? If I can't find anything tomorrow, I'll hem up my loose capris to the knee and wear my liners on Sunday, then resume serious shopping next week.

You could probably get some boys/mens board shorts to wear over road shorts or a liner until you find what you really want.
