Hey, Mid-Atlantic ladies...I tried to ride the Mt. Vernon trail yesterday and totally got lost in Old Town...I needed to head home anyways, but want to head to try it again. Does anyone know of some good written directions or can provide me with some to get through the downtown Old Town portion? I took a right on Union St., following the detour signs, and then couldn't find any other signs.
Thanks!
Julie

I'm not familiar enough to give you directions from memory but check this site out. http://www.bikewashington.org/parking/alex/alex.htm

You want to follow that dotted line at the bottom of the map ^^^ (at least there was construction on the trail last year at the south end of Old Town).
You will see where the trail picks up again when you go under the highway. At least, there should be signs around there somewhere if the trail access has moved since I was down there last with the construction--It's been just over a year since I rode it.

Union Street through Old Town.
Right on Wilkes
Left on Royal, which takes you under the bridge and then you pick up the trail again.
Then it spits you out into a parking lot at the big apartment building (be careful of cars)--so you have to ride up to the sidewalk, go over a little bridge and then the trail starts again.
Coming back, it can be easy to miss the entry to the trail in that parking lot, so keep your eyes open for it.
Have fun!
