DH asked me to post asking for new bike suggestions for him as well. He has an older Trek 5000 carbon road bike and he wants to upgrade to a good carbon bike with ultegra or better components. He is not interested in anything too aggressive because he has some back issues and doesn't like to be too low (athough he wants to do TT's so he's definitely not looking for a 'comfort' bike either, lol).

He's looked at the Madone, and the Roubaix and the Tarmac, and now he's looking at some of the Cervelos as well. He hasn't ridden any of them yet, just looking and doing some research. Price range is $3000-4500. It'll probably be his last road bike so he's willing to pay for a good one.

Any other bike he should be considering?

I would also look at the Jamis Xenith, along with the ones you have already listed.

Thanks Emily. Not sure if we have any Jamis dealers here but we'll take a look.

He was just looking at the online reviews of the Cervelo R3 and it sounds like it's the kind of bike he's looking for. A race bike for people with back problems - more upright geometry.

We're off to look at bikes today. I like bike shopping.

How about a Merckx? Click on "frames", and it shows lots, they may even have some left from previous years he may be able to get a deal on.

I also just read the Axel Merckx has a climbing clinic coming up in Kelowna. Maybe he has connections .

Axel lives here - we see him around town all the time.

The Mercxk bikes iare nice looking. Our LBS sells them.

A guy I ride with had back surgery just about a year ago and is pretty fast on his Seven Odonata (faster than me for sure! he just comes out with this group to get some miles). I don't know what current model would have similar geometry - and I doubt they're within that price range - but he can dream can't he :D

Has he tried one? I have one, and it was love at first ride. They're super comfortable, super fast (even though I'm not) and owning one has been fabulous. They're designed especially for super distance ("century geometry") riding, but I just use mine 'round the hood, and commuting to work. Their also amazing in wind.

Mine was not really very expensive for what it is. I could have spent more on a Specialized.

Have him check out the Bianchi C2C 928 Carbon series (can get ultregra, chorus, or dura ace w/in your budget). C2C stands for Coast to Coast so the geometry isn't as aggressive as other bikes. As a heads up, the bikes normally ship to the dealer with the stem flipped to be a bit more aggressive, so if he feels a tad too stretched out, you can try flipping the stem.

I have a 2002 Fuga, which I just got last Sept (new). It was in the Gita warehouse all this time waiting me! It's alu with carbon fork and stays. She's white and silver with red and black "Merckxs". Really unusual color scheme for Eddy. I'll someday post pics if I ever get a camera!

I admired the pics of your bike you recently posted!!! Sweet! Yours is the newer version of mine. I can see how you can ride 200 miles on her (well, not really, but kind of ;)).

What about Giant?
We have a couple of Trinitys in large sizes which the lads in the house have used for road racing, and converted one into a TT bike.

My partner and eldest sons are all 6'2" - 6'3.5"

I have an older Trek 5000 (man bike) and a lovely Colnago. I would give the Colnago range a look too.

KG, sorry for the hijack, but I wanted to show MP what my bike looks like. Here it is with Eddy:

I have a Scott CR 1 -carbon with ultegra. I use it as a TT bike as well as my long distance bike. Comfy and aerodynamic. I like the price of these as well.

No worries - I am the Queen of thread-jacking. :)

I find all these posts very interesting and DH is enjoying researching all the recommendations.

I was looking at a Scott Contessa yesterday. They only had it in small (I need an extra small) but I might try it anyway next weekend.

Very nice, RR!!!

Seconding what Trek said, I also have a colnago and that's been a great bike as well.

You say he's looked at the Madone - what about a Pilot? Less aggressive position, and still a really nice bike. It looks like the 5.0 comes with Ultegra.

He hasn't ridden the Madone yet - going to try it next weekend. Right now, he's loving the Cervelo R3 though.

I am assuming you have checked out the recent cervelo thread with this in mind?

I posted earlier on that assumption (which is why I only mentioned the Giant Trinitys...)

But the cervelos my partner has might just be the answer for your guy...

(EDIT: whoops... the page must have cached itself, cause I didn't see these posts when I went to reply - glad he is enjoying the cervelo :D )

Hmmm... this has had me wondering... particularly when you repeated it it a few posts later...

................... the trinitys? or the tall lads I live with? :D ;)

RR, I think she was referring to my machine, though your tall lads are very intriguing ;).

The new Madones are Amazing! They come in 2 geometries so he can get a slightly more upright ride (30mm) if he is interested. I know Trek doesn't have the splash of a Cervelo, but the new Madone's are Amazing!

I think you mean the Cervelo RS, not the R3. The RS has a headtube that's about 2cm taller than the R3. It is a sweet bike, one that I'm coveting.

You can get the Cervelo stock setup for about $4K. Or buy the frame plus a build kit (http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=cervelo-rs-2008) and spend more or less (w/Ultegra kit is about $3500).

Oh right - two "RR"s! :D  I was referring to Red's Merckx. Since we're Merckx sisters. (I do like male tallness, though. :p )

Hey, I have a Specialized Tarmac Expert. Yes, my bike is a man's bike.. XS.

I can tell you that it is an aggressive frame/fit. He is not going to like it if he has lower back problems I don't think. It's fast and peppy but not made for comfort at all. It's a racing frame. I'm pretty stretched out on mine and have lower back pain from the position from time to time.

The Robaix is less aggressive and built more for comfort.

I know you weren't asking about this, but just figured I would throw my experience with the Tarmac out there.

Thanks KSH - both good points to consider. I'll steer more toward the Roubaix.

My husband just got the Specialized Roubaix Pro. It is made for comfort but also for speed. I think Tom Boonan won Paris Roubaix with his Sp Roubaix. My husband also suffers with back problems. It is worth a trial ride so he can see for himself.

He rode one yesterday and loved it. He WAS going to try the Trek Madone before he made his decision but after he saw 3 of them at the Group ride today, he decided not to.
