Shark attack in Solana beach..

Just heard a gentleman was attacked and killed by a shark today. He was training with a group of triathletes in the solana beach area when he was attacked.
very sad, and very scary! I've done a sprint in Solana beach. :eek:
Of course as a former surfer, the thought of sharks was always in the back of my head. ugh..
My prayers are with this gentlemans family and friends.

It sounds like they were in a "tidal area", and I would think that sharks would think of a tidal area as a big buffet?? But sad, so sad..

That's so tragic. I feel bad for everyone affected by this, especially the members from his group who were swimming with him.

I had no idea there were even Great Whites in the San Diego area!

There is a very large underwater canyon right off the coast of San Diego. Literally right off the coast. We used to dive on the edge of it from La Jolla shores beach when the surf sucked. It would only take a 1/2 hour or so to swim out to it, in full scuba gear. It is a sea-life magnet, which means a shark magnet. In fact, we would walk down to the beach front hotels on an incoming tide and "play" with the 20 or 30 sharks that would be in the shallower waters to feed. They were very small, only 4 to 5 feet and not interested in eating us.

It was very well known that in the winter months a very large great white would frequent the La Jolla area. There were lots of seals for him to eat. I surfed those water everyday for many years and never saw anything that scared me. Then again, you would not see a great white until it was too late. This is a very terrible tragedy and I don't now how it could have been prevented. Especially in warmer water like now, unless they got a freak northern cold swell. Very sad, prayers for those who had to witness it.

I too read about and watched the news reports on this story. It is very sad and I do feel for the friends and family of the gentleman.

When it comes to dying though I don't know that many of us, especially the adventurous type think of "falling asleep" one night in a cozy bed sometime in our upper 80's.

There's something I find more appealing about dying doing what I love even if the last moments are painful. Call me crazy. :rolleyes:

I think this man did just that.

Without risk there is no adventure.
