Does anyone use a basic bike computer? I don't even need cadence. Seems like I have heard of one that has a thermometer. I would like that.

Brand/model recommendations? Wired/wireless?

wireless is comparatively expensive. and they go nuts under power lines.

if I were you, i would take the bike to a bikeshop and tell them what you want.
Installing is not so easy. DH always does mine.

DH installed the last one and did a great job. It was a Cateye, but I let it go with the bike.

I had the PlanetBike b4 the Garmin. It worked fine and was easy to install. When I got the Garmin, we moved it over to Meg's bike quite easily.

It does have the temp function you are looking for.

I've got the Planet Bike Aero Wireless. It was cheap at Nashbar or Performance Bike. I love it. It's kinda big, but it has lots of data on the screen. The thermometer is quite accurate, and it has the basics. Performs just great.

I have the Planet Bike one with the thermometer. Sorry, Sandra, I forgot to get back with you on this. Anyway, I had to bend the prongs by the battery because it wasn't making good contact, but that was the only issue. It doesn't have cadence, which I didn't want anyway, but I did like the thermometer idea. Cyclocomputers aren't hard to install. There are directions with them and you just have to follow them. Putting in your wheel size is probably the worst part because they (computers) are all different on how to do this, but it's all in the directions. Since you don't have to run wires, just line it up on the wheel and voila! Took me about 15 minutes. I have the Planet Bike Aero and so far so good. I think it was around $30 at Performance Bike.

I like my planet bike computers. One has a thermometer, and the other doesn't. The thermometer isn't exactly accurate - it runs four degrees cold in the winter and hops around a lot when it's warm. I love how it resorts to the clock in the corner as a default on my commuting bikes where time matters a whole lot more than average :)
They're not hard to install... tho' I stopped with putting one on the Dahon because I couldn't figure out where to send the wire so it would be least likely to mess up in the folding process. (It's 'way too long from wheel to handlebars for wireless.)

I have a cheap Planet Bike one on my Jamis Coda. Just speed, time, miles ridden, average speed. It works fine.
I have a Cat Eye on my road bike, but it's wired. It has cadence, but no other fancy functions. When we want to know the grades, Steve wears his Garmin HR monitor. We have tried 2-3 wireless computers and they never work! Mine would always interfere with my husband's or something else. One time I was going 203 mph according to the computer!
So, we went back to the wired.
I don't do any mechanical stuff, so I can't comment on installation. I think the Planet Bike one was a relatively short installation for my husband, compared to other ones he's done.

I've the cheap PB one also. Two copies, in fact, as I liked the first copy so well. It does everything I want, and the readout is very easy to make sense of at a glance. Mine are the wired version because I'd heard that the wireless ones are picky about where the readout head is mounted (don't know whether it's true).

I have a TREK wireless... never had a problem.
