View Full Version : "I've never seen so many accessories on one bike..."

That's what a bike shop person said to me yesterday! LOL :D

I had my bike out for a ride, and didn't think I'd be going into a shop. Normally, if I take my bike in for something, I strip it down a bit. But, not yesterday.

I had to laugh. I stood back and looked at all the cr@p all over my bike, and yes, it looks a little funny. BUT, the most accessories? I don't think so!

It had:

Aero bars
Cyclometer
HR monitor
Headlight mount (no light on it yesterday)
Frame pump
3 Bottle cages
Seat bag
Clip on seat-post rear fender

It is a rather funny looking beast, with its aero bars on the front and granny gears in the back. But I think I've seen some commuters with way more stuff than that! And, since I don't have Veronica's Thom in my life, it doesn't have a sound system! :p :)

Well, I wouldn't consider the frame pump or the water bottle cages to be accessories, more like essentials.

Actually, apart from the aerobars, you're describing a pretty typical randonneuring setup. Someone who's not worried about flats, riding in the dark, riding in the rain, riding in remote places where water isn't easy to get.

I'm really glad I had my light (& light mount) last night, and I went thru lots of water and could have probably used that 3rd bottle mount if we were in remote areas. And the seatbag came in handy for dumping articles of clothing I didn't need (and needed again as evening approached.) Obviously I had a frame pump.

I laugh more at the folks who carry nothing but their teenie-tiny itsy bitsy little underseat bag ... when they're stranded because they didn't have that extra tube or ran out of CO2 cartriges. :D

Some of the items do seem a bit incongruous but you have to figure each person has their reasons for what they carry.
They're probably just used to seeing mountain men and racer boys.

You're in a class of your own :)

Oh, humph! You are a piker.

I have a computer, underseat racks, a fairing, lights, my pump, two water bottle holders, a little seat bag with tools & stuff, a cable and most often a backpack with camera and other necesities (picnic!) slung over my seat back. And that's on the Going Light days.

I fear it's just far too easy to hang stuff off a recumbent, at least until I decide to take a tour and then I actully put things on the bike. :D

This was pre-600k, or "How to Make a Sub 20 Pound Bike into a 35 Pound Bike". The bar and saddle bags held probably 15 lbs of food, batteries, tubes, CO2s. I also used a camelback to hold rain/cold clothes... all of which I used.

2 front lights. 2 rear lights. Cycle computer. Bar bag. Saddle bag. Bottles were added later.

Wow, that is quite the look! (Beautiful bike, BTW).

Is that robot arm thingy a light mount?

(Also BTW...I would be a little less embarrassed by all my gear if I was riding a 600K with it rather than a simple century!) :p

But wait, there's more....

I forgot that the handle bar bag had a map holder also:

Yes, that was a Mizuno Space bar. Key word "was". They are not very durable.

Yeah, I tried those too, did not like.

BottO and I are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the front wheel skewer light mounts made by Nitto.

Robinson Wheelworks should be getting them in any time now.

Hey Chris, have they come in yet? If so, pls give Lee & Jo (she of the kindof pink Riv) a call.

Or Lee could just mosey on up there.

That space bar was LAME. Less than half way into the 600k, I happened to look down in time to catch my $500 niterider Moab before it hit the pavement.

I gotta say I love my abrasive stair tread tape from the hardware store that I use with the NOB on the fork for my lights now. Those Nitto mounts sound cool, but I am guessing they won't work with a carbon fork?

Nice pic, starfish! :)

When you climb Shasta in August, you too will see that view! ;)

ETA: that view is maybe 1/3 the way up.

The best thing to do with a space bar is to launch it in outer space!:p
Topeak makes something better called a Bar xtender

On which bike:
The Cannondale has a Terry Cro-Mo Butterfly
The Roubiax has the Specialized avatar 143 that came with it.
Currently the terry gives pain in the front and the ava. give me pain in the rear after about 60 miles(The terry work good on the 'dale, but more upright on the new bike)
mission for weekend Find an Avatar 155 or lihta 155 (not sure about the ti rails on the jett and my weight)

I absolutely love seeing these -- I've been wondering where to put a second water bottle... great ideas!

And, the best thing I saw there was the sandals and wool socks. Are you from Washington State? Because I thought we were the only ones to wear wool socks with sandals. Welcome to our craziness! Of course we do it OFF the bike, as well! :p

Oh, duh, sorry. I was asking about the Roubaix. Thanks!
