Thom just made an adapter that will run off a Dyno hub to power small external speakers for an MP3 player. Music while you ride, but still maintaining the ability to hear traffic, powered by the rider. Cool stuff!

oooh :D sounds like an idea that should be patented, marketed, you can retire and live on an island and just ride your bikes (while listening to Cheeseburger in Paradise playing from the tandem) :D

Alas, it was not his idea, so that would be wrong. :p

He read about it on tandem@hobbes.

With the right adapter, it can also run my GPS, no more batteries for that either.

Dang. That's how I felt when someone else patented the idea of turning a piece of wire into paperclips first ;)

How much does it weigh? Not that I'd care about weight on the bike. Till I can't take 20% of the weight off the engine weight of the parts does not matter.

That is REALLY cool!

But wait - here's the question: what are you going to play tomorrow?? :D

If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.*

Fortunately, this doesn't apply to Mr. Thom. :)

Can he design a mister for my xtracycle? We got a little warm today and people thought it would be nice to have a little sprinkler set up so that peole riding behind me could be gently sprayed from the gallon dispenser...

He has a play list of rock songs that I find motivating - Van Halen's Right Now, a couple of Pat Benatar songs...

He carries it because I have too much other stuff on my bike. :D

I can only give you the benefit of the doubt and hope that word has a different connotation in your part of the world. Around here that would be considered rude and insulting and not the type of discourse we participate in here. That type of comment is not what TE is about. Perhaps you don't recognize humor. Perhaps I misunderstood your use of the word. Perhaps not.
There are times when it's simply best to say nothing.

Excuse me? Since when are you a moderator & since when can i not say exactly what i feel?

Anywho-V do let us know how the MP3 thing pans out! Sounds funky!

I think if I had to choose between Thom and a can opener - I'd take Thom. I just don't don't see the can opener driving me to long rides, doing SAG. Maybe the can opener would change its own tubes...It could open dinner, but could it cook it?

No can openers are not as handy as husbands (partners, significant others, or whatever word makes you happy.)

My husband is an intellectual who is NOT handy. However, he has been with me for 20 years, as of yesterday, and he has provided endless support for my cycling [SAGing, coming with me to rides & cheering me on, etc] & everything else in life.

Can openers can't reach the top shelf of my cupboards, or clean the top of the refrigerator. That's what my 6'7" husband is handy for. And making us a fine living, changing the oil in the lawnmower (doing it right now), and gazillions of other things that I can't live without! :)

May I remind people that Zen is usually writing on the ironic voice?

I am quite convinced her second message was a total joke.

I have a very handy man too. Don't think I could give him up, even when he makes me mad. He changes oil, washes cars, builds porches, fixes everything on my bike, works really hard and that's not to mention the other extracurricular activities  You know like setting up the tents when we go camping. LOL

I will have to remember to come to this thread next time I am wanting to trade him in. LOL

That little gadget that he set up for you sounds way cool. Music is such a motivator for me.

My BF is so not handy. I'm not sure he can even work the can opener. Lucky for me, I like to laugh.

My unfortunate experience is that a bottle opener - one of those rubber doohickeys that opens bottles and jars - which I've had since college, has been more handy than any guy I've known. :o

yeah Zen is our Miss Independent. Give her a break for being so.

I, on the other hand, am happily married to the man of my dreams- Mr. Leatherman. He can carve a turkey, fix my bike, assemble and disassemble dorm furniture, open up a great wine or beer, and open up a can of whoop ***.

And here I was afraid of offending V with my Red Green (http://www.redgreen.com/index.cfm?app=cart&a=menu) quote.

Just assume Zen is always writing in the ironic voice and you'll save yourself a lot of energy.

Though I do want to know what CC meant by coolio. Isn't he a gangsta rapper? Cultural mistakes are easy to make when you only think you speak the same language. I mean, our toilets don't even flush the same way.

One day whilst complimenting my neighborhood gangster cars hood I made the cultural error of saying "nice bonnet. :D"

The results of the misunderstanding were devastating

Oh yeah, I know...but then it drifted to what they were handy for again. :)

The music system Thom made is awesome! I have to be doing about 5.5 mph for it to have enough power. That's a motivator to not go too slowly up a hill.

Thom had the system on his bike. he rode with us for about 15 miles yesterday and then headed back to the car. The new job is taking a toll on his riding time.

But then he drove up to the second control at mile 65 to give me the music system. I listened to Bowling for Soup for 60 miles. :p

My favorite line: You're crazy and I'm crazy about you.

Do any of these handy men-folk, with more upper body strength than me fix gazebos? My wrought-iron gazebo was twisted into a pretzel after Katrina, twisted back up again, and is now on it's last legs (litterally). Should I also mention that it's covered by a climbing rose. Buying wrought iron in this climate was a mistake - with the rose on it, it can't be painted. Many parts are now rusted through.

I need someone to build my rose a new gazebo. Oh and fix the leaky bathroom faucet. And figure out why the garage door won't go down (I JUST had the pulleys replaced), and and and

Yeah I'm an independant, but some jobs are beyond me, or rather I get tired of having to do EVERYTHING myself.

I'll quit whining now...

Trek420

Feel free to whine, that's what we're here for:cool:. We understand. Sometimes I feel that cycling, thought to be an individual sport, is a team sport. It helps that someone's there whether your DP rides or not.

Hmmmm, TE work party then a ride in New Orleans. How's your gumbo?

LOL - that guy has the right idea.
Now my husband seems to be away with work more than he is here and so I am pretty well sorted at taking care of myself and the tiddly peeps (except I know SK downloading pics is an issue) but would a can opener make me laugh till my sides hurt. Nahh I don't think so.:)

Now where can I find someone to rig me up a music machine like that. Hmm but with my speed would it ever play.:D

Hmmmm, TE work party then a ride in New Orleans. How's your gumbo?

Question #1 - okra gumbo or file ("Fee-lay") gumbo?
Question #2 - what kind of meat? Chicken, sausage, duck, shrimp, crawfish, alligator....? (gumbo doesn't ever have beef, but anything else is fair "game")

Come on down! JazzFest is in two weeks.

I have a handy one...if I didn't we would be broke.
The latest incident is a good one and all my fault.
Changing the toilet paper roll as the toilet is flushing...Oops the springy roll thing goes in the toilet and its gone...

Crossing my fingers that it doesn't get stuck and its on its way to where ever that "stuff" goes. Well my well-wishing didn't work and after a week of a few backups he is pulling out the toilet. A big mess and some heavy duty tool use and what does he find...the wooden springy rod. It was lodged in the bendy part of the toilet. No more back-ups and crossing fingers. I am sure he saved us hundreds in plumbers fees.

Cooked him his fav meal last night, BBQ chicken and a veggie pesto pasta salad.

The radio thing sounds great and so inovative!

We did an organized ride last week and there was a guy playing light rock on his little portable speaker thing..."Lady in Red" is not a motivating song when climbing. I think he tried to keep up with us just because he knew he was annoying! UGH!
