Looks like the Park Service has graciously allowed 300 riders for this event. 225 for the century, 75 for the metric. http://craterlakecentury.com

Anybody game? Sadie Kate? I think I am signing up! I need a challenge for this year.

Here's the profile...

Hmm. If I can find a friend to go with me - it's a long ways away from Vancouver - I find this really tempting!

Is registration open? I didn't get my email.

Jobob? Kim?

I'll email Petunia.

We're in. DH and I have been wanting to do this route and I think we can be ready by August. Awesome!!

Hmmm, it says online registration is no longer available. Has anyone tried it?

Crater Lake is a beautiful ride. If you miss out on the century there are loads of places to park on Crater Rim Drive and you could do the ride on your own. if you go in late June (like we did last year) there is a good chance the road may still have parts closed to vehicles but open to bicycles.

Registration is open on Active.com!

(though, I'm having some serious issues...what's up with Active.com??)

GLC, did you finally get registered? I just did mine and had no problems at all.

GLC1968
04-08-2008, 07:41 AM
I did!

Active.com would allow me to change our info in my profile (since we've moved since the last time I used it) but when I'd click to register for the event, all the old information came up. When I'd click to edit it again, I'd see the new stuff. I just went ahead and registered anyway, so some of my info is current and some is old. I don't think it'll matter as long as they get my money! ;)

Have fun all you northwesterners. I went to Crater Lake for my honeymoon stayed at the lodge there and rode my mountain bike around the lake. It is awesomely beautiful. Hope you all take the time to enjoy the scenery.

The Bubbster and I are both signed up. Now if it would quit snowing so we can ride.

It's rather funny looking at all the people running around town dressed from spring when it doesn't coordinate well with their goosebumps. Our next door builder/neighbor was going to install some outdoor lights for us but has held off because he "already put away his long underwear and doesn't want to dig it out again."

BW is $99. I just grabbed a couple rooms fast after having bad experiences with other rides. The HI is close by?

Yep. The BW is at 2627 S 6th St and the HI Express (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/1/en/hotel/lmtor) is at 2500 S 6th.

A spoke wrench works well too, as BottO* discovered after my ride on Sunday.

* In true Jobob fashion, the receipt for the final checkpoint at the Marina Safeway for my 200K permanent was for the purchase a 6-pack of Fat Tire Ale. Alas, we did not have an actual bottle opener in our posession, but the intrepid LeeBob made do with a spoke wrench. Hence, LeeBob is heretofor known as the Bottle Opener, or BottO for short. "BO" having a somewhat negative if not on occasion not totally inaccurate connotation .

Can Opener of course being already taken.

Email today from the Crater Lake Century folks that there is still space available:

Hello everyone! I hope the start of your summer has been good. At this time we only have 100 spots remaining for the Century Ride and 50 spots for the Metric Century.

Some of you have already registered, so please let your friends know that they should register soon so that they are not left out of the "Most Beautiful Century in America" .

Go to www.CraterLakeCentury.com to register and spend some time looking at last year's ride.

Look forward to your registrations!!

Bib #26!! Anyone else receive their packet yet?

I also noted that on the second page it says to 'bring this (race packet) to event registration on Saturday evening...' I most certainly hope that was a typo, as the ride is on Saturday!

We are not 100% sure we'll be able to do this ride. We are in the process of moving and haven't ridden in almost 2 months (except for short commutes to work). All this wasn't supposed to happen until AFTER Aug 16th and now I'm concerned that it will just be too much! :(

"Entertain" is not the term I'd use.

Veronica
07-10-2008, 08:54 AM
I sing when I'm riding - to entertain myself. The last two times I did Jo's 200 K I was belting out "Live Like You were Dying" as I rode into Dublin at the end.

The Thumps definitely help on long solo rides. I turn them on for the climbs.

Thom use to sing "I would walk 500 miles" when we first started riding in the late 80s. He'd change the word walk into other things - bike, barf, etc.. depending on how I was doing.

I have periodically sung on short climbs to make someone laugh and then beat them up the hill. Singing can be very useful.

Volume is completely dependent on the combo of hill and fitness.

I'm #113. That's even older than my Wii Fit age!

I'm getting a little worried about preparation for the ride, though.

#1 - I'm not sure I'll be up to the singing portion. Can I just concede defeat right now?
#2 - I'm pretty sure I can hold my own thru the whining leg of the ride.
#3 - If I bring beer and a bottle opener, does that make up for #1?

One big decision to make: which bike to bring? I'm leaning towards the Trek with its Brooks saddle, nice low gears and short reach brifters. Also, I know for a fact that I can ride it all day and stay comfy. But it's mighty tempting to bring the Merlin....

Well, I'd love to see the Merlin.

Would it be worth putting a bigger cassette on the Merlin? Perhaps we could talk LeeBob into doing it for you, he swaps out casettes all the time. It might mean putting an XT (or equivalent) rear derrailer on but he's done that a lot as well. He's very easy to bribe.

Speaking of seeing bikes, I saw your Trek at Crank2 today! I think it recognized me. :)

boy in a kilt

It would be worth it.

Also, get up there a day or so early so you can acclimate. I learned this the hard way when I took a train from portland to K-Falls for the start of a bike tour. First night I rode from K-Falls to Chemult and I was whooped. Normally I deal with altitude changes pretty well, but every once in a while, the altitude wins.

Did you buy anything cool at Crank2? How are Bryon and Peg doing? How's Napoleon (my Trek) looking? Still the old handlebars & tape?

Yeah, the more I ride the Merlin, the more I'm tempted to make it my low gear bike. It's just really solid on the descents and very comfortable to ride. Maybe next weekend work and cars will cooperate and I can take it out for more than 40 miles.

LeeBob can swap cassettes and derailleurs? Oh no, my crush on him now knows no bounds! ;)

BIAK, I'm a little worried about how I'll do in the altitude. Unfortunately, there's a work deadline the Wednesday after the ride, so I'm lucky to be getting Friday off to drive up there. My plan is to bring plenty of Vitamin I and drink lots of water. And whine a lot. And remind myself that however hard climbing at altitude is, it's a lot more fun than working during the weekend. I'll let you know how well the strategy works after the ride's over!

Whining is theraputic. Plenty of water is always useful. Plenty of patience is even better.

Starting the whine fest now. Today's ride hurt. Very few hills but a frickin' headwind now matter which way our heads were turned.

Also, just letting you folks know that I'm not sure what Bubba's full ride plans will be. A few weeks ago, he did a spectacular endo in front of the Grand Pois (that would be Mr. MP) and is really just now starting to have a normal pedal stroke.

So roll call?

California contingent - when do you expect to hit Klamath Falls? For those of you who haven't made the drive in a while, remember that the eats stop in Weed and even the gas stations may be closed in Dorris if you drive through late. Just gas up in Weed, it's easiest.
