As some of you may have seen, my husband and I recently relocated across the country (NC to OR). I haven't been commuting since we moved here and it's been driving me nuts. I've been here for 3 weeks already!

I currently live 1.5 miles from work. I've been driving partly because the weather has been so yucky, and partly because I couldn't justify putting on bike clothes for such a short ride on my road bike. I also didn't want to leave my nice bikes sitting out on a bike rack exposed to the elements.

Late last week, I bought an old Schwinn mixte frame and this weekend, I got the fenders on it. Yesterday, I found the appropriate saddle (for now). Today I drove this morning to bring a bunch of stuff to work, but then I went home for lunch. After eating, I biked back. It took 10 minutes from garage to desk...same time it takes by car!!

I'm never driving again. :p

Mimi - This is her when I brought her home. She now has a new (and lower) saddle and silver fenders. I've got a new seat post and an adapter to add a water bottle cage on the way. I'm working on picking out a rack or basket of some sort as well. She'll probably need new tires fairly soon, too. Oh, and reflecters and stuff....

Ultimately, I think I want a honey brooks saddle and cork grips (and silver break levers and bar ends and maybe albatross bars and...) but that'll be a little further down the road. ;)

Great news! With such a concise commute, you could go home for lunch every day and double your mileage and save your lunch money for those albatross bars! Soooo much better than driving. I like your new bike alot.

On days when the weather is very bad, consider walking. 1 1/2 miles is only a ~30 min walk (depending on how brisk) and sometimes it is easier to stay comfortable walking.
