I have a big problem right now- hefty thighs. I am chaffing to the point of nearly bleeding. Painful when running and after. :(
Would running capris help this? I know I could use the glide stuff but I was just thinking maybe there is something else? I am hoping to find my love of running again and get my nice slim thighs I once had.

ouch.
Maybe capris or longer type shorts that are more of a cycling short style? I know there are running places that carry "compression" style shorts of various lengths. A long time ago when I ran, some of us had chafing problems. I was very young but I remember the coach telling my mom to get me longer shorts. That seemed to solve the problem.
That has to hurt. I have some capris that have a seam that rub when I do longer runs. I tend to not feel it when I run but when I get in the shower...:eek::eek:
Yeah, maybe tight shorts (like these? http://images.mec.ca/media/Images/Products/OutdoorAthletic/5009382s_v1_m56577569830663162.jpg
Surge Shorts from MEC) with another pair of loose shorts on top if you feel uncomfortable showing your curves?

Me three, Lycra-type shorts with 5"+ inseam are all I run in. My faves were discontinued (big surprise), or I'd send you a link.

Before my last (and I swear by all that is holy that it was my LAST) marathon, I got some of these:
http://sugoi.com/item/76120/SUG43111F
Very comfy for hiking and running. Slightly flared at the calf.
Disclaimer: I did not do the marathon in them. But I have done maybe 10 - 15 miles in them and they were fine. Also, I was more walking than running for my last marathon.

Yes, yes, yes! Running "compression" shorts/capris saved my thighs! (capris are favorite if you tend to have compression shorts creep up on you)
It is a beautiful thing!
Terry sells some, too.
And TE has a lovely selection: http://www.teamestrogen.com/categories.asp?catID=111 (I like the ones that are similar to biking capris)

Ladies!!!!! I did NOT need more reasons to shop!
I just yesterday spent my REI dividend, PLUS $100 extra on bike and tri shorts; then today headed to local running store and got all new running shoes, glide and socks (of course!); so what I didn't need tonight was a link to some really cool capris. You people are SO evil!:D
On the original subject: I have NEVER found regular shorts that don't cause chaffing -- I always wear compression shorts under any other type to cover the loveliness that are my inner thighs. Too painful in the shower later. But my preference is capris... almost never too hot for capris here in the Pacific Northwest!
Seriously --- thanks for the links everyone! This online shopping is my only entertainment at work when I'm bored at 3am! Dangerous stuff!:p

2+ on the capris and "tights" shorts. I wear them for my longer runs. I like RaceReady. They're (relatively) cheap. The shorts and, I think, the capris have a gusset that runs up the inside of the entire leg so there's no seam to chafe. They're not tight compression clothes. I like that. I hate feeling like an overstuffed sausage in my pants.

I'm in the same boat as you, and the sensitive skin on my inner thighs weeps for you. When I was 30 lbs lighter, my thighs just played nicely next to each other on runs. Now, they constantly rub and wrestle with each other. And longer shorts still ride up and find their way up my thighs to my connecting region (and all the bunched up fabric becomes like a diaper). Lately, I always run in my tri shorts. I haven't tried running compression shorts, as I assume they're the same thing. They keep my thighs nicely separated and in their own confined area so everybody gets along nicely.
And teigyr, I've been there before. Everybody's happy until the water hits and then you've never had such pain. Funny how chafing works.

Thanks ladies! DH and I are running a 5k to benefit Colon Cancer Research (Dad is in remission) and I desperately want a positive experience. My training runs have been horrific though. Back 30 lbs ago I could wear the running style shorts without issue but now I am a slight chunk and they don't work. I am going shopping this weekend. :D

Have got to say, I wore my tri shorts for a 13 mile treadmill run on friday. My thighs are completely RAW!!! I now understand the need for run capris. I usually wear them but wore the shorts because I knew I'd get hot.
I'm the same re 30 lbs. It needs to Go Away. You'd think with all the exercise it would but no...am actually thinking that I might need to do the D word. I don't like diets. I don't eat that poorly either...
Anyway, I'm feeling for you because those inner thigh rubbing things HURT!!!

I'm lusting after a pair of these CWX tight capris http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=22545 and a pair of these loose (and ON SALE) Sporthill knickers http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=25228
But I'm afraid the Sporthill in L would be too small, and there is no XL... sniffle.
I can't even imagine running in my shorts right now. Ouch.

I also have issues with chafing if I don't wear capris or compression shorts. I also have had issues with shorts riding up even if they are bike style compression as I have pretty large thighs. I have the following shorts and capris and I really like them, don't ride up at all, and I wore the capris for my half marathon and they were great.

Dang, DrB, I was just looking at those shorts on REI.com when I put together my order the other night... and looking... and looking... and wondering about them... and didn't order them
Does that wide waistband tend to roll over or bunch up? (I'm very short-waisted.) What is the rise - using Athleta's system which I LOVE - number of fingers below your natural waist: "index rise, peace rise, scout rise, palm rise"? Do they run true to size?

I always wear compression shorts, capris or tights (depending on the temp) when I run. I love my CWX capris. I did a half marathon in them last weekend and they were awesome!!

Hey Oakleaf-
Looked at the REI shorts last night. The rise is on the higher end...maybe 1-2 fingers below my belly button. (a bit higher than I generally like, but not too high to make me not wear them!). I got a small in them... I usually wear a size 6 pants, 8 if they are slim through the thighs. They are really stretchy, so while the waist looks really little it isn't bad.
I actually like the Roadrunner sports shorts better, the rise is a bit lower (~2-3 fingers below belly button) and they have a little zipper pocket on the side for keys, a gell, or MP3 player.
In general I really like RRS gear, very reasonably priced and I love their sports bras...one of the only over the head bras that works for my 34D chest with out hardwear!

Body glide?
I have chaffing issues too, sometimes. During the winter I run in tights, but when the temps warm up I like shorts. Though capris would be really nice too.
Go to a running store or a sports shop like Scheel's and find a tube of body glide. It looks like a deodorant stick, but you put it on offending surfaces. On each of your thighs, on portions of your feet that might rub on shoes, etc. I've had a stick for like a year, since I don't use it all of the time, and it doesn't seem to take a lot of the product to be effective.
Plus, it only costs maybe $5 or so, I forget.

Teigyr: I made sure last year that the Tri shorts I bought (Pearl Izumi) were at least 6" long for that very reason (http://www.triathletesports.com/2008-Women-s-Pearl-Izumi-Tri-Short-p/08pi-0427-7ab4.htm). The 6" seemed to be just enough for me, but I think I've seen 8" also (here's a pair... http://www.triathletesports.com/2008-Tyr-Women-s-Splice-8-Short-p/08tyr-rspe6a-7b9.htm).
The worst nightmare -- not just rubbing, but rubbing when WET! OUCH:eek:
