This is so sad. The little blurb is pretty accurate. Unfortunately, it was a case of a kid on a lightly-traveled country road, on his way home from church.....listening to his ipod....most likely without a helmet, though I have not been able to verify that today. The last thing he expected was a car on that road....and of course, because of the earphones he couldn't hear a thing....

All guidance counselors from the county were called to the high school to help deal with this. I waited all day to see what the media would report ("bikes should not be on the road, etc."). I am so glad they have not said that. Sad. Very sad.

The woman who hit him is one of my former parents - I taught three of her five children and am supervising the teacher of two of her grandchildren now. She has had a rough time of it - four years ago her apartment building burned to the ground and she lost everything, but all members of the family were ok. Three years ago her husband was murdered. When she hit the boy she jumped out of her car and attempted CPR....

Tragic! So sad on all sides. My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.

Oh, how sad, for him, his family and the driver! And what a waste of a young life...How horrible for the woman behind the wheel---she'll need every bit of support she can get, given how much tragic news she's had to deal with recently......

I didn't see that particular story on the news down here in Cville, Jane, but our local newspaper had front page coverage on Monday about a 26-year old law student who died over the weekend at Crabtree Falls. Ignored all of the many bold warning signs about how dangerous it is to walk out on the rocks there. Another tragic waste of a promising life.:(
