I have been checking out some race listings for WA state, and I can find Triathlons (all 3 sports), Duathlons (biking and running?), and Aquathlons (swimming and running?).
Is there any kind of regular race designation for just swimming and biking?
Not really. You typically find the HIM distance setup as an Aquathon though. I haven't really seen that option for any other distance.

KSH, thanks. That is kind of what I was afraid of.
BTW, I LOL on the running thread when I read your comment about pulling that amazing run out of your rear. You crack me up. (Crack, get it?) OK...sorry. Bad joke. Anyhow, cool about your awesome run!
For some reason, the word Aquabike is in my head...
Ahh, this is why.

Starfish - I'm so glad you brought this up, I've been looking for something like this for DH.

Ah, Dex! Neat to know there is a term for it.
I want to Try a Tri, but I cannot possibly start running until I lose some weight, and I am struggling with that for now (I know, I know...walk the run). I was thinking that if there were some Swim/Bike only events, it would just be a fun way for me to try out a multi-sport event, since swimming and biking are both in my comfort zones.

I think this is the listing of AquaBike events from that website Dex gave. I'm pretty bummed that there seem to be lots of them, but none up in this neck of the woods. :(

Starfish, I will be walking the run. And I just got the book The Slow Fat Triathlete and, when I saw this thread, was RIGHT at the part where she says, so what if you're overweight? If you want to do a tri, don't wait to lose weight, just start where you are...etc. I believe she did her first tri at 220 lbs. She is a total hoot and I highly recommend the book.
I am probably 70 pounds overweight right now. I am doing the Danskin. I will look however I look. But I'm gonna do it anyway. I too would love a swim/bike thing, since even at a normal weight while in great shape, I was never interested in running, and doubt I ever will be. But Danskin is what I found, so walking the run I will be...

Hey Salsa...awesome about Danskin!
I'm not worried about how I look while competing...hey, I survived HS swim team as an overweight teenager...looking back, kinda wonder how I found the courage for that...
This year, I am definitely still focused on a bike goal. I was thinking, though, that if I get myself on a walk, then walk-run-lose-weight program in the fall, it would just be a really fun, relaxing way for me to dip my toe in, since I am so comfortable with biking/swimming.
Guess I should just get over it, and walk the run on something fun and easy next early spring. Don't really want to this year, dont' think.

No, that all makes perfect sense, and a swim/bike is what I would prefer too. Just couldn't find one handy.

So glad to find this thread . . . maybe there's a way to figure out if there is a critical mass of interest in such an event and get one scheduled for our area . . . I've got a hip/back injury that prevents me from running, but I think I could do a swim/bike event.

I'd actually be all over an Aquabike race. The knees and I are not so fond of the running thing (but I like my shoes).

The Vineman offers a full iron-distance aqua-bike. 2.4 mi swim and 112 mile ride.

It is August in Santa Rosa, CA. I did the Barb's Race, women's only half IM, that is run at the same time. Nice location and challenging bike course. I may do the aquabike there this year depending on lots of other factors.

I'd think about a swim/bike. I'm certainly not scared of what I would look like (heck - I'd put on a swimming suit!), but I'm worried about what my knees would think of the running until I can get some weight off. Ah well. None appear to be near me:(

Wow, that Vineman one might be a perfect goal for next summer, after swimming and biking all spring, and doing some Try-a-tri's to learn the ropes of multi-sport a little.
I noticed it was the one AquaBike in CA. I need to go look up Windsor to see how far away it is.

For our local iron distance event (www.redmantriathlon.com) we've had the aquabike for the HIM distance, and I'm pretty sure we are adding the option of the full IM distance this year. Unfortunately, none of the other shorter races around here offer it.
I did the half IM aquabike last year and I LOVED it. My running had suffered and I was in no shape to do 13 miles (even walking). It was great hammering like all h*@l on the bike and then getting off and being done. I'd love to do it again sometime.

That sounds great! What body of water was the swim in?

The swim is in a rather large lake in town. It's the lake that provides the drinking water for most of the Oklahoma City area, so swimming is prohibited except on race day (and for 2 hours the 2 days before the race for practice swims). It's kind of fun to swim in a lake that I'd be ticketed or arrested for swimming in any other day of the year. I just hope that after the race they run some extra chlorine though the treated water they draw out, cuz you KNOW what triathletes do in water... ;)
