I teach 5th grade so I can read children's literature. :D I've read two of this year's Newbury Honor books, Feathers and The Wednesday Wars. Both were awesome, make you think kind of books.

I'm 50 pages into George's Secret Key to the Universe by Stephen Hawking and came back to my computer to order more copies. I want to do it as a read aloud when we come back from spring break and it has some awesome pictures from space in it.

Maybe it will hook some of my kids into doing some science reading of their own. That worked with the poetry unit we're doing right now. :p

Is the Hawking book children's fiction, then?

Yes, but with real science mixed in. It's pretty cool.

I just put a hold on it in our library system. I'm a sucker for sci fi, science, and S. Hawking. I will use as my excuse that I can tell my 5th grade teachers about it after I've read it...

V - have I ever told you I'm glad there are teachers like you in the world?:)

My fifth grader started reading A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, but I think the pace the book forces her to read is discouraging (she is in a "gifted' class, discusses quantum physics on a regular basis and wants to be a physicist if she grows up). I put the "George" book on hold at the library. I bet that better suits her right now. Thank you for the suggestion!

I'm still partial to Ferdinand the Bull and Curious George :o

Oh that Hawking book sounds great. I'll have to get it. Thanks!

They're reading three books nominated for some award right now, and then they're to vote. Em likes the first one she read best (Chicken Boy) because she read it while we were driving SAG together and it was a gorgeous day in Sonapanoma and she just associates the book with our fun day together. Sweet.
