Hello Everyone -
I got into the Danskin Seattle Tri this year and I am looking to meet up with some other people who want to train together. A few people already expressed interest in a post I did buried deep in another thread. I thought I would start a new thread so we could organize some trainings a bit easier.

Hi! Yep, I remember that thread. I would love to meet up with some folks. I'm in Mount Vernon area, so pretty far north. My schedule is messed up, too, for work! But, if you all are making plans, keep me informed, and sooner or later I will be able to join in.

Sounds good! I found a few other people that would be interested as well. I am going to try to get everyone together for a chat then perhaps a light jog or something just so we can figure out our goals/fitness level etc.
Are you up for meeting sometime the weekend of April 5th? I was thinking at the Starbucks at Third Place Books at Bothell Highway and Ballinger Road? I know that is about two weeks away but I am booked this weekend, then it is my birthday weekend after that.

I would love to come, but will be in Portland that weekend. As I said, I don't get much time off on weekends, and tend to book them up when I do! Please keep asking though!
Here's my answer to your questions about training goals / fitness, etc...
June 28 I'm doing an olympic tri in Bellingham, and am trying to train for that pretty consistently! Then I have the Danskin I can focus on after that -- also will be doing the 3-day 60mile walk in September, so have to have some walking in the mix. Biking is probably my strongest suit, but have only been biking for 2 yrs and have a LOT to learn. I'm not even sure what I would do if I flatted in a race! Ha... now there is something we should practice! I can change my tube / tires, but not FAST!
I have jogged intermittently most of my life, but it is JOGGING! It's where I am working the hardest because I think it will make the most difference for me. As for swimming... I will survive! (I HOPE!). Hoping to get a wetsuit in the next 3-4 weeks so I will be ready to practice some outside water swimming!
I would love to get together for any portion of the training. I have basically been training alone for the most part. Company would be great, and sharing some ideas on training.
So, please keep me in mind! If you guys try and put a schedule together, let me know what you come up with. I'll try and fit it in! There are some great rides around here if you all are looking to "get out of town" for a change!
THANKS ALOT!

I am free that weekend, as of now. I think it would be great to get together!
My main focus this spring has been running. Er...not fast though :p:o:p I am running a half marathon in May. I am signed up for the Five Mile Lake Womens Tri in June (sprint tri), Danskin in Sept, and the Portland Marathon in Oct.
I would love to get together to run/jog. Some days are more structured than others (Saturdays are great!) but it would be so nice to be social. I need to ride more, I don't think I've ridden since last Fall. I also really really really need to work on swimming :D
I look forward to meeting/seeing everyone :)

I would be happy to meet, also. Not a runner, though, so I'd skip that part. Would Saturday work? We try to save Sundays for tandem rides. And that Starbuck's would be great.

Saturday April 5th, peachy! Is there a Starbucks inside 3rd Place, or are you talking about the one down near the road across the parking lot?
(there's also the Honey Bear, but finding folks in the Commons can be tricky)

Knot, do you s'pose he could be entertained for 1/2 hour? Unless you're not up for the jog...in which case I understand and heartily accept your need to not do it.
Oh yeah, that means I can be there. DH, who usually likes to go with me, will bow out like a scared bunny if I mention running so I think it will just be me!

I will say here what I also said in the bike fit party thread--my schedule just totally changed and I will be away on this date. I am so sorry! I really wanted to come to this. I have a gazillion questions and am also really looking forward to have some training buddies. Will one of you be willing to let me know what vast knowledge was shared and what's next? I will still want to be a part of this. Thanks.

Sure shootin', babe!
You're the best, girl. Thanks.
PS So I have found two great books to recommend:
The Woman Triathlete--chapter by chapter written by different women about the basics--how to train, how to gear up, how to avoid injury, etc.
The Slow Fat Triathlete---just what it sounds like. Written by a woman who did her first tri--but far from her last--at 220 lbs. She's a hoot and her attitude is great. It's full of good info for beginners of whatever weight. And it's funny.

So can I get an opinion from the experienced tri folks here? Should I switch from mixed age to my age group? I hear age group is much smaller and more manageable, and that mixed age is huge, wild, and wooly. What do y'all think?
teigyr
03-27-2008, 06:24 PM
I'm not experienced, at least I don't feel that way. But I hear that age group is smaller AND the older people get to go first! I knew there was an advantage to this age thing...or at least I thought there should be.
I registered age group with the intention of waiting to see what everyone else did. I figure we probably wouldn't stay together during the race (all of us, that is) just due to the size of it all. That and the swim...I'm the queen of getting passed by later waves. Anyway, I thought we could all meet up before and/or after. Maybe a celebration brunch?
KnottedYet
03-27-2008, 06:37 PM
I'm registered age group. Mixed age tends to be the folks who are doing it together. (eg: sisters doing the tri together) They might be paying more attention to keeping track of each other than to watching out for the rest of the field. But they might be more fun, since age-groupers are just racing alone.
the best way to catch each other might really be to meet before and after. Last time I used the Team Survivor tent as my meeting place for the friend I was doing the race with and my family, but I was very involved in Team Survivor that year. Anybody got a handle on what tents will be there and any they want to meet at in particular? (otherwise, *behind* the Team Survivor tent might be a good spot)
Edit: how 'bout the porta-potties? Everybody goes there eventually....
salsabike
03-27-2008, 06:38 PM
Absolutely! The nurse who was at my endoscopy today (no serious problems) is doing her fourth Danskin. I was telling her about the TE gang, mixed ages and all, and she said we should try to rack our bikes near each other--best way to find each other afterwards.
I think that all makes sense. Can't really plan on staying together in a race, so best bet is to find some practical way of getting together when we're all done.
I have SO many questions that I wanted to ask at this first meeting...
I marched out to the local swimsuit shop this week and got a good tank suit for Fla. and lap swimming. I can't WAIT to do the wetsuit shopping part when I get back from Fla. I just focused totally on how it fit and not how it looked. And "Slow Fat Triathelete" is well worth the purchase--she's a hoot, and addresses every conceivable misgiving any of us could possibly dredge up.
I'm going to send in the request to switch from mixed group to age group. I even have two teacher buddies in my age group, I know.

DH (aka Sean) is the king of finding people in the middle of the race and at the finish. I know he'll be there so perhaps he can wait somewhere...or at least relay messages.
I loved Slow Fat Triathlete!
Salsa, where are you going to lap swim? I just switched from 24 Hour Fitness to LA Fitness (oh so much better) and have passes to the latter if you're interested. I need to get in the OW when it's time because I still get out of breath in the pool and OW will be more realistic. I think I need to just relax...it's not that I get tired but it's an oxygen thing.

Teigyr, I was thinking of trying Meadowbrook Community Center's pool. Where's your LA Fitness place?

I'm an LA Fitness member now, too. They absorbed all of the memberships from my old gym when it suddenly closed up shop a few months ago. Which location do you use?

Oooh, lookie at the link I snagged from IMAZ thread:
http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=32673
We could find each other ok wearing these at Danskin, and they'd be warmish on a cool day and keep us tender PNW frog-bellies from sunburning.
(I'm seriously considering it anyway, as I do burn terribly quickly.)
And I could wear my Team Survivor tank *over* it if I wanted to. :p
I'm thinking I want a race number belt this year. Not too fond of safety pins and the holes they make in my clothes. http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=32247

How about one of the other colors? (white, yellow)
Hey, where'd the white and yellow go, SusanO?
How about this one, instead? http://harlotwear.com/gravityjersey.htm (no, I don't really expect anyone to like this, but it is fun!)
Or we could get one of these, and have it printed with a logo just for us: http://alertshirt.com/higvisshirfo.html The moisture-wick long sleeves are pretty cheap, considering. ($19)

Yeah I suppose it could be a lot cooler in Seattle than the Okanagan in August. In fact, it was quite cool and rainy at ours last year. Hope it doesn't rain this year - there were a lot of bike wipeouts. I do NOT need that...

I propose that we make our second tri group meeting in front of a computer doing the ultimate jersey hunt! It would be a wild melange of "hey, look over there; I like that one.." "No, not THAT one---how about THIS ONE with the picture of Flight of the Conchords doing David Bowie..." "Hey, THIS one is cool..." etc. We'd have a blast. Maybe we'd make a personal visit to Susan for assistance....
Too bad we don't have enough AV jersies to go around. Or might we be able to collect/borrow enough?

I completely and wholeheartedly agree on the review of the Slow Fat Trathlete book. I bought it before I did my first tri and it truly inspired me to just go for it. It also gave me lots of good pointers for things such as the transitions. I just recently re-read the book just for motivation. And now I've loaned it out to a friend. It's sooooooo.....REAL. :)

Super Jock and Jill in Greenlake. By far the best I've dealt with. Any problems, go back and they will make it right.

04-01-2008, 09:32 PM
Definitely Super Jock and Jill. My PT sent me there, and sometimes they do complimentary consults there as well. I've been happy with my purchases there. They've even said you need to try them out for a few days, walk/run outside to test them out, and you can STILL bring them back if you're not happy. I probably tried out six pairs of shoes the last time I was there to make sure I had the right amount of fit & support, and never felt rushed or pressured.
I'll third Super Jock 'n Jill. Super helpful, very patient, and a great return policy. Also, one night a week they have podiatrists and physical therapists in the store to answer any questions you might have beyond the salesperson's expertise. But, even the really young looking salespeople seem to possess tons of knowledge...at least, that was my experience.

Hello Everyone -
This weekend the only schedule we came up with was a jogging one. Of course as more people attend we can plan more jogging, biking and swimming schedules/plans.
Every Sunday at 9am we will be meeting for a jog. It will be at the same spot, outside of Starbucks on Ballinger Way in the Third Place Shopping Center. We will then cross the street for a 30 minute or so jog on the BG Trail.
Everyone is welcome.
