yeah, i'm planning on following the coast and just sleeping outside wherever looks inviting. if you have any tips/advice for the ride, that would be greatly appreciated. could you tell me a little bit about your trip down the coast? like i mentioned, i've never done this before and haven't exactly trained for it, but i do feel compelled to do this.

I haven't ridden that myself, but there are journals from a number of people who have over on crazyguyonabike.com (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com).
Click here (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/journal/?o=ao&category_id=10) to go to the list of Pacific Coast journals on that site.

We rode from Sunnyvale to Sunset State Campground the first day.
Day 2 was Sunset to Monterey. There's a story about this day....
day 3 was Monterey to Pfieffer Big Sur. Met a couple of nice guys that we biked with the next day.
Day 3 Pfeiffer Big Sur to San Simeon - skipping McKerricher and gettinga day ahead of our plan
Day 4 we did a tour of Hearst Castle and went to Morro Bay
Day 5 was Morro Bay to Pismo Beach
Day 6 layover at Pismo Beach - this was the first really sunny and warm place on our trip
Day 7 Pismo Beach to Lake Cachuma (sp?) it's inland - skipping a KOA camprground
Day 8 layover
Day 9 lake Cachuma to Santa Barbara
Day 10 Amtrak back to san Jose
We stayed at State Campgrounds most nights. They have hiker/biker sites and most have showers. There is a great book about biking the Pacific Coast that I would highly recommend.

It's called Bicycling the Pacific Coast by Tom Kirkendell & Vicky Spring.
