So, injured or post injured folks...
I've declared March getting back īnto it after injury"month.
Between cycling, swimming(pool & open water) and pilates i'll be busy!
I think i'll cycle twice a week on my way to work. It's about a 5km ride in two bits each way but it'll be a challenge in terms of how my leg holds up during the day. I'm doing my first test on Wed.
Since i had to cancel my summer event plans, i thought i wouldn't train for anything.Well, that's changed as i recently spotted 2 open water swims on the 29th March & April 19th and they're the last ones for the summer season..Our group does open water swims on sundays so i'll do that plus 3 swims @ the pool.
I'm not pressuring myself to get faster (pool or cycling)yet.
I'm just interested in getting from A to B without any problems etc.. I need to beat the "corner" gremlins. :o

and with the switch back to "day light savings time" in the northern hemisphere, there'll be enough time after work to ride the levee. Now if someone could just do *something* about the wind...

Hi CC,
I had aready declared March as my transition back to something...I am not sure what just yet. But back to...training I guess. I think a month of transition and then a month of really easy base training. Then I will see where I am at the end of April.
Right now I need to figure out how to get in to a routine with a very unpredictable body. My PT is officially finished, so I need to come up with a plan.
Right now I am sort of gentle pushing of my limits at the suggestion of my PT to see how I feel. I did a walk/jog on Thursday and another this morning. Aside from being very sore, my knee feels ok.
Still can't swim because of the elbow, but that is ok for now.
I am going to try a street ride tomorrow.
I am going to need to do two days of strength training for my legs, and I am not sure how to fit that in.
But that is what March is for...figuring it out!!!!
Now if someone could just do *something* about the wind...
I'll see what I can do ;):D

Well, maybe...
The shoulder is finally feeling MUCH better, and doesn't seem to bother me when I am riding (but I still can't shovel snow :D).
Unfortunately, when I fell on my hand in January, I must've really done a number on SOMETHING in there. I thought I had just sprained the fingers, and went on with life in general. Until now. Still in pain, still SWOLLEN. I am heading for x-rays tomorrow :(.
Just when I did think I was getting back in the swing...

She Fly - I had to laugh at the "still can't shovel snow" bit. You know, I still can't fold laundry. :D
I am hoping March is also my transition back into actual honest to goodness riding outside. (2 solid hours on the trainer yesterday, fully supporting weight on the shoulder for 2/3 of it and NO pain today!) So I'll join all of you in the whole "transition club".

Well, I cycled to work today..btwn train stations so it's only a 5km ride on way. Cyclists seem to be zooming by way too fast  I kept it very very easy but there are little hills that annoy my knee. It was ok.
I too think i've done something odd to my left shoulder/side.. wierd stuff man..Perhaps i moved my head or neck the wrong way @ the pool?

MP - you should see the snow at my house in Maine! The banks are up above the windows. Since I have to lift the snow over my head to get it onto the bank, I really, honestly, can't do it. At least that's what I'm telling DH :D.
Glad to hear so many are getting back on track! Odd though, that a few of us have come up with something else in the interim... Anyone think we might be addicted to the walking wounded title, or our PTs? ;)

I have to admit, I'm going to miss the gang at the PT clinic - the staff and the other patients, and our running commentary on Dr. Phil. There's a real comraderie among the patients that work out in the main room.
And Shefly - that is WAY too much snow!!!

shefly - my mom lives in Topsham (I didn't grow up in Maine, but I went to Bowdoin). that's a familiar sight...
so... I went to the doctor today. he seemed really pleased with my strength and range of motion and sent me to PT. he does want me back in 6 months to see how the fracture looks. I think it is mostly curiosity on his part to see what happens. we know the bone won't go "back", but I think he wants to verify his theory about how it will fester in place.
when I asked about riding, he said I should have a couple of pt sessions, then it is fine. so in my world, since I have pt on thursday I can ride this weekend!!! yay!

Good Morning,
I went for an easy mt bike ride last night. We have some local trails behind my school. Pretty flat, but nice to be in the woods. We did about an hour, and I felt much more confident, pushed a little harder, even rode up a hill. Came back home and lifted my weights with my legs. Knock wood, no pain. At all. That could change as I am on my feet today, but for now, I will take it.
Now, if I could just fix that darn elbow.....

Umm help! ..I want to find out what exactly I should be doing while on the bike to get me back stronger.
I am rather annoyed that 4 1/2 months have passed and i'm still unable to cycle the way I want. Am I doing the right things? Should i cycle more but a smarter way?
I'd like to make a program with specific things to do each on the bike using my hammies & glutes but am unsure if i should just speak to the folks @ my pilates studio or a sports physio or hire a coach.
How long does it take for the VMO to get stronger? That's one of the things that's keeping me from being able to jump out of the saddle & pedal down from a bent position with my right knee. Hammies n glutes too are comin along.
ARGHHHHH..Help...
I want to join a cycling skills course in April and need to be able to do hills.
I'm not happy...

CC are you doing any VMO specific exercises? To strengthen mine, I do a partial wall squat with a ball squeezed between my knees. Do you do that one?
have you tried looking on line for cycling specific strength drills? Like one-legged spins etc.

Sounds like many of the walking wounded are still struggling! :( But I love the idea of March as a getting back to riding month. In like a Lion, out like a Lamb, right? So by the end of the month, all our injuries will be like harmless little lambs?
I am struggling too. Today I rode 9 easy miles and my ankle is swollen and painful and the arch of my foot is hurting again too. I rode a little bit on Saturday and Sunday and things felt pretty good. I rested Monday and Tuesday, and just I don't see how easy rides that last less than an hour could be pushing it too much. Prior to Saturday, I was able to do an hour on the trainer with no problem. So why should going outside in this beautiful weather be causing problems?!?! Oh, this is so beyond frustrating!!!

OH yeah! It's going to be 48 when I get home and I am going out for my first road bike ride of the year. I am curious to see how my neck and shoulder will feel. I have about 5 PT sessions left; it feels a lot looser, but I always tense up on the bike. She gave me 2 new exercise to do this week and I hope they help.
