Fresh off the winning losers from this week, I'd like to offer up the newest challenge.

I think that the % of body weight lost in the next 8 weeks is an excellent way to go.

For all of you who don't want to stop weighing in and checking in with everyone else, here we go. We'll start this Friday (March 1) with our beginning weights.

See, everyone gets a fresh start!

I don't have any great ideas for a prize... anyone out there with good ideas? For me it's always about the food or coffee, but perhaps there is something more appropriate to have as a reward!

AGain, you can register as non-reward or reward challenge. If you don't want to have to get a prize for the winner (or don't care about getting one if you are the winner), then register as a NON-reward challenger.

I'll make an attempt to do a graph or table for us all to see each week.
Weigh-in reports on Friday; hopefully report will be ready sometime on Mondays for everyone.

Thanks all... good to have each other for motivation!

So, is today weigh-in day? Or Monday?
Anyways, I'm in the challenge again as I have yet to reach my goal weight (150) :-)

Today's weight: 179.6

I'm still in. I woke up Wednesday night with some sort of gastrointestinal bug that kept me sidelined and in bed yesterday. I'm feeling a bit better but still a little ooky about eating. But crackers and bread get old quickly!

I weighed yesterday (thinking it was Friday) and today (realizing it was Friday) and I'm 146.2. I'm guessing that's a bit low from being sick, so we'll see what it is next week.

My long-term goal is 130.

I'll try to think of a good prize. I'm not sure if I want to do reward or non-reward this time.

Hope everyone had a good week!

I will do the non reward challenge in light of the fact that leaving for Hawaii lies in the middle of the challenge (in 8 days) and I won't be packing my scale!

I am 152 on the knot.

I am stoked. My goal weight is about 148. I got down to 145 about a year ago and had people tell me that I looked sick and scrawny. I will "try on" 148. Hopefully I will get there this challenge.

Bring on the bikini!!

I am definitely in! And if there is a competition, I am in for that too - it helps me to stay motivated. :)

I have no problem with sending out another water bottle to the winner. I think that works well.

I am slow and steady - after the first challenge, I had lost 2.5 pounds. After the second challenge, I lost another 2.1 pounds.

I even lost .5 pounds between when the last challenge ended and this one started.

I like the downward trend, so that is my goal again this time - to keep on going down!

My weight today - 141.7

Excellent ladies! Here we go again.
As of this am, I am at 176.4.
Fridays are weigh ins.
Sounds like the suggestion was another water bottle. So be sure to let me know if you are in for reward or not.
I'm in for reward this time.

Flybye: How did you manage addresses? Just see who wins, and then give everyone there address? Is that ok with all? (PM of course... no public announcements!)

Will get us a chart on Monday

Am in again, too, but not for a reward. I'll report my weight and body fat percentage tomorrow morning, as I don't like the numbers this morning. My weight has jumped all over the place lately and I've not been exercising because of bronchitis, but am so happy to start a new challenge. My weight even fluctuates according to where I place my scale. Go figure.

I am so in on this one. I need some motivation to get these last few pounds off. I will have to weigh in when I get home though as I did not weigh myself this morning. If any of you are interested, I have created a challenge on the nikerunning.com website but you must have the Nike+ iPod chip. If you do and would like to participate, visit this site. It is for TE members only. :)

I am on the fence. I did not do well at all at the last one.....I will have to report a Saturday AM weight as I did not weigh in today (if I am in the game again)....I'll mull it over. Right now I am feeling stuffed...I kinda over ate at lunch. (Can't wait to see the scale in the AM!) I started the week out so good, counting my WW points. Lastly I need to find out where to send my water bottle....did I miss getting email.:confused:

I think that the last person just checked in this morning on the last challenge. Flybye will PM everyone where to send the water bottles to the winner! I hope she's thirsty!

Hey guys!

Count me in again...but for the no reward challenge this time. My starting weight is 165.2 (this was Wednesday's weight before my scale was packed away on the moving truck!!).

I have to be 'no reward' as we are driving across the country this week and I won't have my scale for the next weigh in. I *should* have it by week 2 though!

jesvetmed - I'd be happy to keep doing the chart if you'd like. By week 2, we'll be more settled and I should be able to be more 'timely' in my postings. :) If you'd rather do it yourself (or if you'd like me to email mine to you), I'm ok with that too. Just send me a PM and be patient on replies as my computer access over the next 7 days will be sporatic at best.

Yay! I'm glad we are doing this again!!

I missed the last one, but really need some motivation from my TE sisters to get on track again.

Starting weight 180.4 (from last Friday).

In a moment of weakness, I ordered 4 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, but the plan now is to put them out for the people at work, and not bring them into my house to darken my cupboards.

I meant to post the yesterday, but my online time completely got away from me. Anyway, I'd like to join in on the reward challenge.

Starting weight: 243 lbs.

This should be interesting, because I have no actual goal weight. I'm really only trying to take off some weight now in hopes that it helps the knee that's been so resistant to treatment. I've always disliked the notion of dieting, so I'm hoping that by joining a challenge like this I can stay a little more focused.

OK. I've been seeing this thread, and avoiding it, because I have really, really been off track since I lost 10 pounds in November/December. I had really been on track. Since then, I have tried 1000 times to get restarted, but I am struggling. I'm working out lots...but the eating is not sane at the moment.

I would like to join the non-reward challenge. I almost hate to join, because I don't like lying to myself, and honestly, I am not sure I am motivated to stay on track at the moment. But, I really, really need to lose some more weight. I haven't been this heavy, for this long, for a long time. :(

So, here we go. Deep breath. Starting weight for this challenge: 162lbs.

I would like to lose 10 pounds in this 8 weeks. But, even if it was a solid 5 pounds, that would be an improvement. Good luck, everyone! :)

It's definitely not too late -- we'll take you all! I'll get our progress chart posted tomorrow and can then update it weekly after each Friday weigh in! No worries to you all....I've already put on 1 or 2 lb since weighing in Friday.. .is that possible!?!?:( Time to get back to work!

Okay, I was out of town all weekend so I weighed in first thing this morning. I'm at 161 lbs right now. Trying to get to 150. This weight is a little heavy since I normally weigh in around 158 +/- a pound, but that's okay. Anyway, I'm joining the non-reward challenge.

Stay away from evil girl scouts... they are everywhere right now!

If there is a "?" under REWARD by your name, it means I am unsure whether you are in to get / give reward at end to loser of the most weight by percentage... please let me know your preference. And, NO, you can't wait till the last week to decide!!!! :p

I could use a little TE WLC support today. The week has been going great, diet-wise, until today, that is. The 4 boxes of GS cookies I ordered 2 months ago are here. I put a box of peanut butter Tagalongs on the community table nearby, but there are 2 boxes of Thin Mints (150 calories for 5 cookies) and 1 more box of Tagalongs (150 calories for 2 cookies).

By about 4 PM, they will be very difficult to resist. If I bring them home, I am doomed. How can I resist the temptation?

Maybe little more info on the Girl Scout Cookies will help. I found this article interesting

(CBS) The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, my Girl Scout Cookies came. Usually I just eat them, but
this time I've been trying to find out more about them. Harder than I thought it would be.

The Girl Scouts buy them for about 85 cents a box. They sell them for $3.50 a box so the girls are pretty good businessmen. Last year they sold 200 million boxes - that's $700 million. As I understand it, The Girl Scouts get to keep about two thirds of that. I don't know exactly what they do with it. All kinds of good things they tell me.

One box label reads "Made for The Little Brownie Bakers in Louisville, Kentucky." Not "made BY" Little Brownie Bakers but "made FOR" Little Brownie Bakers. They're actually made by the giant cookie company, Keebler. Keebler is owned by Kellogg's but their name isn't on the box, either. Nothing simple about this.

The other company that makes Girl Scout Cookies is ABC Bakers. ABC Bakers is owned by Interbake Foods in Richmond, Va.

I've tasted most of these and they're pretty good.

One variety is called the Reduced Fat Lemon Cooler Cookie. I don't think "Reduced Fat" belongs in the name of a Girl Scout Cookie
but they've had complaints about the fat content and I suppose they're trying to address that. "Lemon juice solids?" I don't understand that, either. Is it juice or is it solid?

"Tagalongs" are peanut butter cookies. I like peanut butter and I like cookies but I've never liked peanut butter cookies.

A new variety, called a Cafe Cookie, is very good.

Everyone's favorite Girl Scout Cookie is the Thin Mints.

As much as I like Girl Scout Cookies, there are some things about them that I don't understand.

I read the labels and I liked the cookies better before I knew what was in them.

They all have partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

I made a lot of cookies in my lifetime and we don't have a drop of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in our kitchen. We don't have any lecithin or niacin either. The Girl Scouts put what they call "reduced iron" in them. How would a girl reduce iron?

The Cafe Cookies have caramel coloring in them. You shouldn't color a cookie.

They all have riboflavin.

I looked up cookies in my Fannie Farmer cookbook and Fannie Farmer doesn't use riboflavin.

Next time a Girl Scout tries to sell me cookies, I'm going to ask her about partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and about riboflavin.

I don't need a reward...I just need company!
It's not the evil girl scouts and their cookies....I am a carb-a-holic!!!! Bread, buns, muffins, potato, rice, and breading on everything!

Man can I cook and man am I in trouble! Italian dishes are becoming my specialty.

kerrybelle, thanks for the laugh on the girl scout cookies.

I have resisted them FIVE times now. Haven't bought a single one.

Here's the scenario..................

"Would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies?"

me - "No thanks, what I would REALLY like to buy is smaller pants. Here is some money (I cough up whatever meager change I can) to help with your troop, thanks!"

complete thread drift here, but this is another one of my favorite lines..............

small box, kids, storefront, and KITTENS!!!

"Would you like a free kitten?"

me "Nope, I would actually PAY YOU to keep them!" :D

I am entitled to NOT like cats. Sorry to all you cat lovers. I have tried. I have had so many bad cat experiences that I wouldn't know where to begin. About the time I had to lay NEW carpet in my already NEWLY carpeted office because the cat decided that the location of the litter box was inconvenient, I quit seeing them as cute and furry. I started to see them as a $2000 investment that poops in the house.:eek:

Good luck tomorrow!!

Oh and put me down for the reward challenge, please!

Good morning ladies! Finally up and moving after two solid nights at work without much sleep in between.
Weight this am: 172.8. Down from 176. -something. I think I weighed at a bad time last week?

None the less, too much work to constantly eat (which I'm really good at when I'm bored!), and stuck to my workouts for the most part this week. So I should be losing!?!?!?

I'm really sorry everyone is so sick this week. Sounds AWEFUL. Get better all, and don't breathe our direction!

Good work on the first week! I'm taking those girl scout cookies to the office today. I like flybye's idea of what to tell the girl scout cuties... I'll just give money next time!

And Jen-Jen... I too am a carboholic. I've worked pretty hard to break away from rice and / or pasta at every meal. It just always seems like something is missing without it, but I'm getting more used to it!

Good luck this week. I'll post everything by Monday.

I was listening to NPR and a guy at some university hired a student to nag him, and then bet a friend that if he couldn't lose x amount of weight in an eight week period, he would pay that friend 500 bucks. He lost the weight.

Loss aversion thereapy works pretty well. How about for the next challenge, everyone agrees that if they don't lose a certain amount of weight or body fat, they donate x amount to charity?

Just a thought.... I'm about 5 lbs over what I'd like to be weight-wise, and the jeans are snug, so I would be in on this one.

Although... I'm biking three days a week for commuting and I think a lot of the weight is muscle weight... my body is definitely different this time at this weight than it was last time I weighed this amount. I seem stockier.

I used to belong to a coaching club where this was called a "leverage". We used to be required to use them in certain situations and it really, really worked for most people. A great way to do it was to agree to donate the money to a charity that you don't support. Then, if you don't make your goals (and all goals had to be reasonable, of course) there was NO benefit to you. If you agreed with the charity, you might be likely to think "oh well, at least so and so gets a benefit from my screw up". Opposing political campaigns were popular choices as incentives. ;)

Anyway, I'm checking in here to say that I've been pretty bad this week while travelling. I ate a lot of the wrong stuff and I basically sat on my fat butt for 8 - 10 hours each day. Ick. Since we've been in Portland (Friday afternoon), I've been better. We rode yesterday (15 - 20 miles or so) and I'm definitely making better food choices. No more driving, either! I don't have a scale, so my weigh-in will have to wait until next week. The problem is...I also won't have internet after today until next Saturday, so I'll be a day late. Oh the joys of moving...

It sounds like everyone is doing well, and I hope all you sickies are recovering quickly! See you next week!!

Unless you're four feet tall, why do you want to lose weight?

TNGIRL

Good question. On a tall day I'm 5'1. :) Three years ago before I met my husband I was 108-110. Since falling into the comforts of marriage and getting lazy with my diet I had gained 12 - 15 pounds. I have taken some of the weight off, but if you can imagine 10lbs is a lot of weight on a small person. I want to get back to a more comfortable weight, but mostly I just want to be more consistent with healthy eating.

I am only 4'10". I currenlty weigh between 117 and 120...depending on the contant flucuation. I was truly 99 pounds in my younger years. Even then I was not fully toned and had some "fat". I reached a max of 140 pounds. I know for many people 120 - 140 is "ideal". Not if you are barely at or over 5 feet tall. Even at 120 pounds AND riding AND strength training my % body fat is 30% (not good) my BMI is just now 25-ish (normal). So by no means am I thin or anorexic. When you are short, a little poundage means a lot! Yes, I see folks cringe when I say I need to lose weight but wear a size 6. But then again, I am not even close to average height, why should I be an "average" weight or size? Hope this explains things a bit. I am truly trying to lose weight for body fat%, BMI, health and cuz I see the fat around my tummy! Good luck to everyone! At any size weight lose or keeping it off is a lot of work!

I'm in the same boat as the other two. It's not so much about weight as it is body fat %age. This time las year I was about 4 lbs heavier and was at 30% body fat. I think that's lower now but I'm not sure how much lower.

I can completely understand why it must be frustrating for us to see ourselves in the same boat as others who might be trying to lose a great deal more weight but at the same time, it's so hard to compare. My original weight of 141 lbs would be a perfectly wonderful weight for many of you who are taller and perhaps larger boned, but on me, it looked and felt awful. Losing 25 lbs from a small frame can be like losing 50lbs on a taller person. Also, it can hard for people to uneerstand that we're not necessarily trying to be skinny 20 year old models - we just want to maintain a healthy body weight.

Thank you for saying this. I am not in the weight loss challenge, but at barely five one, if I gain a pound, I can't button my pants. When I got out of college, I gained weight for the first time in my life. It took me a year to lose 25 lbs. It was long and painful. Us short people have to work twice as hard and long to lose a pound! Thankfully, I have been thin since then, but I had to lose after both my pregnancies (which I exercised through). I am best at 105-107. I tend to get a bit above that in the winter, even with all of the winter sports I do, the gym, etc. nothing keeps me as skinny as cycling.
I like to eat too much to starve myself, but I do eat very healthy stuff, no junk food, soda, fried food, and rarely have dessert. I do like my piece of dark chocolate almost every night and some wine a couple of times a week, but now I notice even that can push my weight up. I guess I'm going to have to do some major weight training, because I can see this getting just a little more problematic every year as I get older. It doesn't matter if others think I look skinny or if I have acceptable body fat percentage; if I don't stay vigilant, I will be 10 pounds heavier in a flash.

I'll attach it again, and hopefully everyone can open it. If not, I can email it if you need that -- PM me.

I still have four people I am unsure if they are in for a REWARD... biking socks, of course!!!! So if you would like in to receive the reward, or purchase for the winner, let me know! These are the people I don't have yet: jen-jen, kelownagirl, limewave and Starfish.

Urgh. I'm not doing so well. I can't seem to get motivated. I'm trying to eat well but I seem to get so hungry. Maybe it's just because of my period this week. Either way I need some motivation. I really want to lose weight and get fit and strong. I guess I just need to buckle down.

Anyway I weighed this morning just to see where I was and I'm the same as last week. I doubt I'll magically lose anything by tomorrow. But I'll weigh again anyway. I think I just needed to whine about my lack of willpower/motivation.

Maybe I need a more structured plan. . .I don't know.

I hope everyone else is having a successful week, though!

I can't seem to get motivated.

I'm right there with you. I've been wondering if I should pull the plug on this effort for now, because I just don't seem to be doing what I need to in order to lose weight right now. Not exactly not motivated...just not doing what I know I need to do, either in terms of planning/eating, or in terms of setting up motivational triggers like I normally do.

A little frustrated.

Starfish -

Keep it up! :-)

It's not necessarily about losing weight, but at the very least maintaining. :-) Heck, I'm finally back down to 172, my pre-sickness season weight. (I've been really sick three times this winter - I'm blaming the college students since I haven't gotten really sick until I went back to school). I got up to 178 and FREAKED - two runs of antibiotics will do that to you. :-( I got down to 175, then got tonsillitis this week. I haven't been able to really eat solid food until last night, so I lost three more pounds. I drank lots of fluids and soup. :-) Ice cream has been helpful, too.

I'm not in this contest, but you guys have inspired me. I'm 172 today, and my goal is 155 by the end of summer. :-) Slow weight loss, fast biking. ;-) My goal weight is 150, then we'll see how low I really want to go, but that'll probably be it, because I like having muscle, and I like to eat. What's weird is that so many competitive male cyclists are around 155.

jesvetmed
03-13-2008, 11:24 AM
DiBear: Well said... you and I sound like we are at the same point in our weight, same goals. I also like to eat and have muscle too much to lose too much (I cannot remember when I last weighed less than 150 -- hmm, age 23 I think!).

But just being conscious of what you eat and how you workout is what it is about. Eventually, it catches up. I spent three years sitting at 175 to 180, and am FINALLY moving downward. Something finally snaps at some point! I think this forum really helps me to know that someone else is paying attention... and I have to weekly WRITE IT DOWN! That helps my own motivation -- and I know that no one else is keeping track. Just me, but it seems that is enough.

Everyone does it in their own way at their own time! We're all just here to support that.

Keep up the work. :)

Weight Watchers gives you all those.
You only need to go about four times to get all the literature you need for the plan you choose. I first went to WW about 10 years ago but still had all the books.
It's not as hard as I had worked it up in my mind to be.

I tried WW and did not lose any weight. I was pretty frustrated as some of my co-workers started it and lost weight. But the more I thought about it, I eat pretty healthy most of the time and exercise quite a bit while my co-workers usually ate fast food all of the time. I need to find something that will work. I do have hypothyroidism which I am sure affects my ability to lose weight. I keep a food journal and eat anywhere from 1200 to 1600 depending upon the day. Stay away from most processed foods too. Maybe my body is happy with 150.

When I had my tonsils out at Christmas I dropped 10 pounds in a week. I don't recommend that method though. Since then I've been writing down everything I eat. I lost another 7 pounds that way so far. Sometimes the effort it takes to figure out how many calories it is, stops me from eating it in the first place.

I totally get the not motivated part. This is the first time in my life I'm consciously trying to lose weight.

Weight today: 165.6...Up 0.6 from 2 weeks ago. Considering that the previous weight was a guess and considering what I ate and how much I sat on my butt last week, I'm actually kind of pleased with this. It could have been SO much worse. I've been eating much better this past week since we've been in OR, but I'm still eating 100% of my meals either out, or they are prepared meals eaten at home off paper plates. LOL Jes . . . I'm still formulating it so am reluctant to share a half-baked plan, but so far it involves a one- or two-day watermelon fast, planning in advance what I will eat on a daily basis instead of recording at the end of the day what I ate; my exercise plan is still in the works but will probably include a plan to bike/spin at least one hour daily or 2 hours every other day, plus two days of weight lifting, plus my standard one-day-a-week 8-hour day working with 15 camels (my passion). Okay, now I'm out of breath. :)

Jes, I groom all 15 of them every Spring and even throughout the year, plus feed them lots of treats and clean their pens (ie, rake and shovel [my favorite form of weight-lifting]). This is all on a volunteer basis. Only the Bactrians spit, but they know me so well that they only cuddle with me, but do occasionally spit at the other Bactrians when food is around; the Dromedaries are more prone to biting than spitting. :-)

TNGIRL - some of my most successful weight drops were the day after the occasional big meal. Think of it as revving your engine. ;)

I was shocked to find that I weighed 170 this morning, down from 175 last week. Something about tonsillitis, liquid diet . . . ;) I'm feeling a lot better now, but not eating like a pig like I was before I got sick. I'm eating like . . . I'm losing weight. ;) I'm going to try to stay in the habit. No more pizza between classes. That will be hard.

If I get down to 165, I'll be down to my mid-season weight of last year. I was 165 for about a week. lol...story of my life. My body likes 170. That's all changing, though. :)

After the disaster before Christmas, where I ate comfort food non stop, I have started to lose weight again. I have lost about 8 pounds in the last couple weeks. I know that sounds like alot, but I am doing the Atkins induction thing for a bit to get started. It really drops the initial weight and gets me off the sugar craving thing. I will do it another week and then just eat sensibly and well. I actually gained 13 lbs over Christmas due to a very traumatic death in the family and being basically sequested in a beach house with a large grieving family and all the neighbor's cookies, cakes and cassaroles! At any rate, I am back on track and working out hard for a 22K trail run in May. I keep seeing the arthritis med commercial that says that every pound on your body is like 4 lbs of pressure on your knees....

Well, I have really been having trouble lately. This morning I signed up for My Food Diary (http://www.myfooddiary.com/default.asp)(dot com of course!).

The one thing I have a little trouble with is their estimation of calories burned. But, I think, especially for the cyling activities, that I will just choose a little lower intensity than they say. For instance, I might choose:

Cycling, 12-14 mph if I actually did a faster ride.
or
Cycling, 14-16 mph if I was doing a long, hard, strenuous climb (at 10 actual mph).

I don't know...I'm going to see how it goes. I need something fresh.

When I lost alot of weight last year, I cut out my morning Starbucks stop. That was probably 1000 calories between the Grande Triple Latte and the "muffin," which is really just cake. I opted for tea and cereal with banana.

The other change I made was that I ADDED food--FRUIT! I added fruit to my lunch, and I made sure to eat an apple a day, usually during my mid-morning slump (which became less slumpish after I cut out the sugary stuff). Dinners pretty much remained the same, but they were pretty healthy anyways. I think adding fruit made a big difference.

I also upped my pilates intensity and frequency. It seemed to really make a difference in my shape.

Tulip, that's great that you made that change. And congrats on the weight loss accomplishment! I never would have thought I could give up caffeinated coffee, but slowly it just happened. And I feel better now without it.

For the past few months I've been experimenting with an intuitive eating approach. It hasn't helped me lose any weight but I've stayed almost exactly the same for quite awhile now. It's good, but frustrating because I want to be losing right now. I've played with counting calories but it hasn't stuck, yet. I was a serious coffee drinker for years. I started drinking coffee when I was 4 years old (so that means I was a coffee drinker for 35 years)! Yes, that's right. In my south Louisiana family, kids got cafe au lait for breakfast. But your doc is right, one day I just lost my taste for it. Gone. I didn't even want it. I've had it a few times since 2006, and it really put me on edge. One time I was bad buzzed for the entire day, and I couldn't sleep that night. It was horrible!

I do drink tea, which does have caffeine, but it seems gentler. And if I don't have my tea in the morning for some reason, it's okay. I don't get psycho or headaches. And tea still has the ritual of coffee. I collect teapots!

Regarding weight loss, I know I wasn't honest with myself about the calories packed into my morning Starbucks ritual. I was commuting 28 mile round trip, but most of that was replaced with just my coffee and cake. So even with alot of exercise, I wasn't losing weight.

One time I was bad buzzed for the entire day, and I couldn't sleep that night. It was horrible!

Same for me. When I drink caffeinated coffee now my stomach goes insane and I get headaches. It's not pleasant. Now I don't know how my stomach got used to it in the first place. The caffeine helped me survive university, though! The only thing I do miss is a really delicious cup of coffee. Some decaf tastes pretty good but I have yet to find one that I absolutely love.

On the weight loss front: I have to say I feel like I'm having a good week. I had a long trainer ride last night that made me feel really productive (despite the major pain my saddle caused me) and I've been eating well. Even if I don't lose this week I feel pretty good. But I hope I end up with a loss. :)

My head is just not in the right place for it right now...so I am going to do MyFoodDiary.com for awhile and focus on taking a look at nutrition vs. losing weight.

I might be back if there is a new challenge later on. Continued well wishes to all! :)

OK... down to the 170 earlier in week, but back to 172.5 today. How does that happen so quickly??? It's called cockiness... "look how much weight I lost!" Yeah, yeah... I guess back to the grindstone!

And cut back on the lattees.... I checked.. my Grande Non fat Carmel Macchiato's are 190 calories. I'll have to go to Nonfat Lattees and save the CM's for treats. I can do it!

Starfish: Let us know how the diary goes. I've considered it before but the time seemed overwhelming (I was writing it all down and looking up calories, though). Sounds like a very reasonable way to go about everything. I'll have to cruise the website and see what they offer.

Flybye: Welcome back - you're right... You should never regret weight gained on a vacation -- they are all worth every calorie!

I'm kind of in a similar place to Starfish, but I'm going to go about this a bit differently. I *almost* decided to just disappear from this challenge after weighing myself today, but I'm not going to do that as I don't think it'll help me. I don't know why I'm having such issues, but I do know what to do to change it.

I'm embarassed, but here it is: 167.8 Up 2.3 from last week!! I'm not sure exactly why and it could be TTOM, but still...that's not pretty.

I'm committing to changing this trend: I joined MyFoodDiary.com and I'm tracking everything again (it's quick and easy!). I just started yesterday, so my hope is that by next week my weight will be going the right direction. Since I joined the last challenge (and continued with this one) I've gained like 7 lbs. Totally going the wrong way, right? Duh! I've also got DH on board with me to get back in shape. We've both become sloth-like...and that's just not acceptable.

I know I'm not contributing anything beneficial to this challenge right now, but I do think that keeping myself accountable here is going to help me reverse this trend. Honesty can be painful...but at the moment, I think it's what I need. :o Thanks to all of you for putting up with me! :)

It is easy, and the information you get in daily reports is pretty motivating, at least for me.

The first couple days, there was a little learning curve, and some extra time spent getting used to how best to do food searches. But, once I got a bunch of my normal foods loaded into this feature called "The Fridge," it started to get pretty quick and easy.

I just realized that I never posted on Friday!

I weighed in at 167.7. After a full week of logging all my food and exercising, I'm down a lovely 0.1 lbs. Nice.

To be fair, Friday night I was up all night getting sick...so something obviously isn't working right at the moment. I then spent the weekend NOT logging and not exercising. Ugh.

I had a very bad moment last night. I was looking at my naked body in the mirror in the bathroom right before bed and I realized that no matter how I turned or sucked or flexed...I could NOT make myself look good. Wah. When I'm this overweight, exercise sucks. It hurts when I do it and it hurts after I'm done. I've GOT to turn this around. I've never been so overweight in my entire life.

I think my plan is just going to be head down, foward motion. I know what I need to do and I'm going to force myself to do it. Screw enjoying myself or my workouts or 'feeling better'. At this point, I'm reaching critical density...I need to tough it out and get things going in the right direction.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just needed to get it out, I guess. :o

Catherine, why not give super low carb a try, if only to jump start things and get some semblance of control. You mentioned to me before that you did well on moderate low carb. Have you ever had your glucose tolerance measured? I wonder if you have impaired glucose tolerance like me.

For me, I combine super low carb with high protein, so that I can slowly make glucose by gluconeogenesis, as well as burn amino acids for fuel during cycling. I bring bottles with carb free protein shakes on my ride, as well as almonds. It does take your body about a week to adapt to running on a higher percentage of fat than carbs, but if you goal is to lose body fat why not give it a try. Even if you don't have impaired glucose tolerance, it will put you in a hormonal state that favors fat burning (glucagon>insulin) rather than fat storage (insulin>glucagon).

WHen you eat a lot of carbs, you secrete insulin to clear the carbs, even with normal glucose tolerance. If you have impaired glucose tolerance its even worse, cuz you'll have to be in a state where insulin>glucagon for a longer time to clear a glucose load.

Many don't realize it, but even fruit and so-called healthy starches, whole grains, etc. rapidly turn to sugar when they are metabolized, and do induce insulin secretion. If you have a very effecient glucose metabolism, this is probably not problematic, but as we age it can become less effecient, especially in those of us that put on weight.

GLC1968

Hey Trisk - I know I'm not glucose intolerant (or at least, not severely) but in general, I do perform better on a modified carb diet. For me, the greatest benefit is the overall reduction in cravings.

But unfortunately, that's not the reason I'm so overweight now. I'm just plain lazy. I gotta get off this self-defeating train!! I'm not one of those people who is doing everything right and just not losing (at least, not at the moment). For me, I'm not even doing it right. :p I've not been inspired and I've just been too preoccupied with other things to get back on track like I should have.

Thanks though!

Fresh off the winning losers from this week, I'd like to offer up the newest challenge................................

Thanks all... good to have each other for motivation!
Jes

Is there any chance I can join in, if it's not too late, perhaps I can pinch Flybye's place, as she has dropped out.

I have not had the best of health for a while, since being diagnosed with COPD...........BUT since hearing all about Running Mommy and her IMAZ she is about to do, it has drawn me back to this site.

Probably like many, when you are out of salts, you think everybody else is slim and fit and doing well.............well, of course I am dumb thinking that. However, it still does not get away from the fact that I have piled the weight on, as have not been able to exercise or ride.

So, please let me know if I can join in.

If I can't, still like to wish good luck to all you other guys.

Clock

Everyone is welcome, at any time. (Of course I don't make up the spread sheet but I'm sure that's what they'd say. )

I am UP this week. Jeepers creepers. 122.4

Not sure how much longer you guys are going on this challenge, but I count me in. I have about 20 pounds to lose. Was doing really good in January, but have kind of stalled, so I'll need to change something to get the weight loss going again.

I'm starting at 149.

kjay
04-11-2008, 05:31 PM
Same at 179.0. I've been exercising more and eating no more than 1200 cals per day, plus just started working with a personal trainer. Won't anything work anymore? Completely bummed out!

How many more weeks do I have to turn this around?

137.2 this week. woohoo.

kjay - dont get discouraged, it'll happen. you hit plateaus as your body adjusts.

ClockworkOrange
04-12-2008, 01:15 AM
Damn, following PinkBike at 137.2............ but well done.

Although far too much, I weigh in at around 170 but since being unwell, it has shot up to 187!

Carrying extra weight with this damned COPD thing, is not very sensible, so I really have to make a big effort.

...............goes off to make porridge for breakfast.........without sugar!

I'm at 171.2 as of Friday morning. Feeling better about things this week! Hope to break that 170 mark by end of this next week.

CLOCK: Of course, anyone with such a COOL AVATOR can join anything I'm doing! I'll put you and TC TREK on the list. I think there are only two more weigh-in weeks on THIS challenge. But this isn't the first, so maybe people will want to continue and start from scratch again. Let's see what happens! In the mean time, WELCOME, and here's to losing a few pounds!

Hi Jes

Thanks for the nice reply.

Yes, wish that lovely dog was mine, I only have a budgie now, mind you, he was an orphan and he's cute, plus he listens to me whinge and moan all the time.

Shock, horror, just checked my weight at the nearby Leisure Centre and it's a pound more than I thought, so it makes me 188 pounds

AND it would appear I have shrunk, I have always been 5'6"

Am really going to give it my best ..............that will make a change......:D

Staring at that horrible little piece of paper, certainly sends home a message. :(

I decided to do a little test...I lost several pounds the week I gave up all alcohol. Then gained some back with a little alcohol and too many cookies. This last week I drank as I pleased to see if it really made that much difference. I weighed in at 130, so I guess it does. No alcohol until after Memorial weekend, as I am doing a 3 day ride, first time ever.

Today's weight 174.4. Up .2 pounds, which is OK.

Are we almost done with this challenge- is there one more week after this or 2?

I think there is only 1 more week? Or is it 2. Yeah, I'm a big help, aren't I?

After this challenge period is over, I volunteer to start another one. I need it. ;)

I think I forgot to weigh in last week, but this week I'm at 167.2. At least I'm FINALLY moving in the right direction. Now I have to keep it going...:)

Same old same old story . . . no weight change for me. I do feel that I've lost inches and will start keeping track of inches rather than weight. I will continue to track my weight for this challenge, however. Not sure whether to smile or frown, so I'll do both. :) :(

same for me, too. :o

I guess 'LOST' in conjunction with a negative sign on a % lost would cancel out the concept of weight 'LOST'...but perhaps it makes more sense to just say that we've gained? :p

(not that I'm happy about it or anything!)

When it's YOUR gain -- it's okay to say "GAIN"... I'm just staying neutral here! :D

OK LADIES!!!! Here's the final results of the Weight Loss Challenge #2:

In #1 place with the most weight lost by % of body weight....
BAMBU101 :D

Here's the breakdown for everyone I got final weights for:

bambu101 start 180.4 end 172.6 % 4.32
jesvetmed start 176.4 end 170.0 % 3.63
motochick start 134.0 end 129.5 % 3.36
kerrybelle start 139.5 end 138.5 % 0.72
Pinkbike start 138.4 end 137.8 % 0.43
Kjay start 179.0 end 179.0 % 0.00
kelowna start 119.6 end 121.0 % -1.17
GLC1968 start 165.2 end 167.2 % -1.21
over50new start 141.7 end 144.0 % 1.62

I see that bambu101 was a "no" for a prize for this challenge.
The next in line was me. Is that fair? I was a yes.
So the socks are mine I guess!????? If that seems weird to anyone else, the next in line is motochick. So let me know what you guys think and I'll PM everyone that had a yes or an "unknown" for rewards for this challenge. THANKS!
